Magical Morocco Trip - From Tangier to Marrakesh to Casablanca! Family Trip to North Africa

Morocco is a fascinating land of rich culture, history, and natural beauty. From its colorful traditions, stunning historical sights, to breathtaking landscapes, to its mouthwatering cuisines, Morocco offers something for every kind of tourist.

We flew from Miami to Casablanca (nonstop flight on Royal Air Maroc), and drove to Tangier, where our trip began. After exploring Tangier, we headed off to Chefchaouen, a blue city in the mountains via bus (you can book tickets here:

From there, we returned to Tangier to take a train to Marrakesh (you can book tickets here: The madness of Marrakesh was fabulous, but we found peace and tranquility in the Atlas mountains, with the range starting just about an hour away, to explore Ourika Valley and Ouzoud falls.

Upon returning to Casablanca by train, we finished our trip with a visit to the hauntingly beautiful Hassan II Mosque, and a final feast of luscious Moroccan flavors.

The whole trip was completely unforgettable. We highly recommend everyone to take a trip to this glorious place at least once in their lifetime!

Here are the places we stayed and how many days in each place:

Tangier Airbnb (4 nights stay)

Hotel Dar Echchouen (1 night stay)

Tangier Hilton (1 night stay)

Marrakesh Airbnb (3 nights stay)

Casablanca Hilton (1 night stay)

Restaurants where we ate:

Dar Tanjia - Tangier
Ali Baba - Tangier
Restaurant Tarifa - Rmilat Park - Tangier
RR Ice Cafe - Tangier
Cafe La Sabrosa - Tangier
Triana - Chefchaouen
Cafe Asaada - Chefchaouen
Layali Karoun Iranian Grill - Marrakesh
PAUL Restaurant - Marrakesh
Al Bustan Restaurant - Ourika Valley (Day Trip from Marrakesh)
Restaurant Berbere - Ouzoud Falls (Day Trip from Marrakesh)
Hotel BORJ Cascades - Ouzoud Falls (day trip from Marrakesh)

Staying with this Amazigh family was a highlight of my time in Morocco. The Berbers - locally they prefer being referred to as the Amazigh people - are a North African community with their own culture and language: Tamazight. The family I stayed with isn't necessarily representative of the Amazigh community at large, but they are part of a sizeable community of people who live in the Atlas Mountains, far from the busy and vibrant cities of Morocco.

Thank you to:
→ Joao Leitao, a travel photographer who helped me find this lovely family. Check him out on InstagramL
→ Joao also runs a beautiful riad-style guesthouse in Ouarzazate, where I stayed for a night:

MARRAKECH, MOROCCO (2023) | 10 BEST Things To Do In & Around Marrakech

Marrakech is located in the center of Morocco. With its vibrant colors, buzzing atmosphere, mix of tradition and modernity, and aromatic smells, it’s a city like no other: Marrakech truly stimulates all your senses at once.

10. Explore the Marrakech medina (free walking tour)
The medina is the heart of the Marrakech, packed with shops, traditional houses called “riads”, restaurants, and many of the historic sites.

☑️ Free walking tour:

???? WHERE TO STAY IN THE MEDINA:
- Riad Basma (where we stayed - budget option):
- Palais Dar Donab (more luxurious):

9. Try the traditional local food
Some staples you have to try include couscous, meat brochettes, and the most iconic dish of all: tagine.

8. Visit the Saadian Tombs
The Saadian Tombs are a 16th century burial ground of the Saadian dynasty, which ruled over Marrakech between 1524 and 1668.

7. Find peace at the Majorelle Gardens
Located in Marrakech’s new town, these lush botanical gardens are filled with cacti, palms, and other colorful trees.

6. Stroll around Mellah Jewish Quarter
There are still a number of Jewish places here, including the Lazama Synagogue, the Miara Jewish Cemetery, and the Spice Market.

5. Get lost in the souks
What makes the souks in Marrakech remarkable is the wide variety of exotic items you can buy, such as babouches, lanterns, ceramics, carpets, and leather goods.

☑️ Different souks in Marrakech:

4. Check the ruins of El Badi Palace
The Saadian Ruler Al-Mansour who was buried in the Saadian Tombs built this grand palace in the 16th century.

3. See the beautiful Bahia Palace
After El Badi Palace, it might be interesting to see the contrast with the beautiful Bahia Palace, which was built in the late 19th century.

2. Go on a day tour to the Ouzoud Waterfalls
With a height of 110 meters or 360 feet, these are the tallest waterfalls in the country. A day tour from Marrakech includes a hike down to the river, do a short boat ride to get closer to the falls, and hike up again.

☑️ Ouzoud Waterfalls day tour:

1. Experience the Jemaa el-fna square + Koutoubia
the Jemaa-el-Fna square is the hub of entertainment, with a variety of food and juice stalls, musicians, fortune-tellers, henna tattoo artists, and snake charmers.

We technically spent 3 Days on this trip, which was enough with our baby. But we would love to visit again one day to explore some of the other aspects the lodge has to offer and all the cool things there are to do in Mindo.

Stay tuned to learn how to feel more empowered on your travel journeys with your family, craft authentic memories, connect through cultures, and embrace life anywhere in the world!

Real Talk:
Despite our attempt at keeping our Morocco Travel Documentary as authentic as possible, you are still watching a highlight reel. When editing, we naturally tend to choose the most exciting videos. What you don’t see are the hours spent driving through less spectacular landscapes or some of the unpleasant challenges we faced.

Did we like everything about Morocco?
Far from it. As mentioned in the video, the huge amount of trash definitely dampened our experience. Additionally, we were surprised by the sheer number of begging children. During our trip, we counted a minimum of 500 children asking us for money or sweets. While Morocco undoubtedly has to combat poverty, this behavior often seemed less dictated by need and more by opportunity. Stopping and giving is an individual choice, of course, but when we didn’t we were regularly flipped off, kicked after, or hurled insults at.
In general, though, we perceived most Moroccans as extremely friendly and helpful. The best example is the three local men who selflessly helped us to change our ruptured tire. We cannot thank them enough.

Full Disclosure:
This trip was entirely self-funded. However, we did enjoy a two-night complimentary stay at La Sultana Oualidia and a two-night complimentary stay at La Sultana Marrakech.

TIPS FOR VISITING MOROCCO The weather during the spring is very nice, though you have to keep in mind that it changes depending on the area of country you are staying in. So the further north you are, the colder it will be, then it will warm up the further south you go. When planning your trip to Morocco the best time to go will be in the springtime. The temperatures ranged from 50 to 80 during the day and about 40 to 60 at night. This will also depend on the area of the country you are staying in. November to January is not the best time to go because it tends to get quite rainy. Then in the summertime, the temperatures get very hot, so keep that in mind when planning when to go to Morocco. You will need at least a week to explore what the country has to offer. Ideally two weeks in Morocco would be best, so that you can really explore. Make sure that you travel around to different areas rather than just picking on area and staying there the whole time. Get out of the touristy areas of the country a get a taste of the true Morocco. Keep in mind that depending on how many places you want to visit there is a lot of driving involved. For instance if you want to spend a night in the Sahara desert it could take you an 8 hour drive to and from the desert. So you will need to plan accordingly. Be aware that if you ask around on how long it will take to get somewhere, you will most likely be told that it will take less time that it actually will take. If you are a squeamish person you may want to really do some research before planning your trip. You will definitely see some eye opening sights, like animal parts just hanging or laid out in the open. This is not a location for a germaphobe and you need to be careful where you eat. You may want to look into hiring a driver for your trip to Morocco. This will save you some headaches and if you are not comfortable driving in foreign places. This may not be in the budget, but it is definitely worth looking into. Make sure to keep an eye out for different stands that sell souvenirs and authentic merchandise. You will find that there are a lot of places that sell imported knockoffs. Something that may be on your bucket list is camping in the desert. If so you should look into the experience when visiting Morocco. This is a big commitment considering the drive it takes to get to and from the area. If you like food you should definitely look into taking a cooking class when you are in Marrakech. It could turn into the highlight of your trip. In major areas you will find that most speak English, but in smaller areas that are less touristy you will hear a lot of French and Moroccan Arabic. The money in Morocco is the Moroccan dirham, and you can’t get this out of the country. You can exchange at the airport or you can go to an ATM. But keep in mind that for the ATM you can only take out 2,000 dirham at a time which is about 200 dollars, and you can only take out a max of 4,000 dirham a day. You also find that very few places take credit cards. Having a driver can really make a big difference on how your trip will go. A thing to keep in mind is that there are police everywhere, so if you are planning to drive around yourself you need to keep an eye out because they do pull people over quite a bit. The roads are mostly narrow and winding. You may also come across some areas that are in the mountains and you will be on a narrow with a drop off one side and mountain on the other. So, if you are a nervous driver in areas like this you should definitely look into hiring a driver. Keep in mind that you are in a conservative country and will need to wear clothing that is appropriate. Pants or skirts need to be below the knee, keep your shoulders and cleavage covered. Loose and flowing is a good option because you will be able to cover the areas that need to be covered and not get overly hot in the weather. BEST PLACE TO TAKE FAMILY PHOTO If you plan on experiencing the desert, this is a great place to get a family photo while you are there!

TRIP TO MOROCCO - FROM LONDON LUTON TO MARRAKESH | FAMILY TRAVEL VIDEO| 4K HD VIDEO| DECEMBER 2023

TRIP TO KINGOM OF MOROCCO -
FROM LONDON LUTON AIRPORT TO MARRAKESH MENARA AIRPORT

Despite the distance from home, flying Easy Jet from Luton to Marrakech was the most affordable option, so we drove down and found a cheap deal in the Long Stay car park – and as a spotter, this is one of the best. The Harrods hangar and biz jet parking area is right alongside you, and you have a view across to park of the passenger terminal’s stands, and some of the distant biz jet parking areas.

Getting the bus to the terminal also passes (briefly) some of the other biz jet parking areas. Remember that Luton is London’s biz jet airport of choice, so there’s always something of interest to see.

Once checked in or checked- in online, we headed upstairs for some food. In the food court you have views over one of the smaller airliner aprons, and in the distance the airport’s single runway.

You’ll pass all of the easyJet gates, and then reach the original part of the terminal to join the mad rush for Easy Jet flights.

Boarding is done by walking to the aircraft, so we headed for the front stairs to give more chance of a window seat – and more chance to see the aircraft. From this area you can often see into the maintenance hangars at Luton.

The flight from Luton to Marrakech is around 3hrs 20 mins long. EasyJet's seating is fairly better, and anything you want to eat or drink must be bought. But there wasn’t anything to complain about – the views were good all the way, with a stunning sunset as we reached the African coast and descended for arrival.

Soon I’ll post a spotting report from Marrakech Airport to guide you around what the airport has to offer, and how to get the best views there.

Hope you all enjoyed the video
Stay tuned for the forthcoming videos
