CHECK OUT HOW WE SPENT OUR 1 DAY TRIP IN ISLA DEL SOL, BOLIVIA.

00:17 Our small boat left Copacabana harbour at 8:30 am, just next to the kiosk, where we bought our tickets the previous day. After a 1,5 hours boat ride, we arrived at its harbour at Temple of Sun, which is located on the southern part of the island.

02:34 From there, we started to walk north to visit a viewpoint called Cerro Queñuani. On our way, we also met horses, donkeys and could spot a few llamas in the distance. From the viewpoint of Cerro Queñuani, the panorama was fascinating to the peninsula of Copacabana, other islands and the deep blue lake. A stone mausoleum was also located on the top and cute llamas were eating grass next to the path. A baby llama was very interested in us, it even came close to us.

03:58 Before having lunch, we climbed another hill called Palla Kasha. The slope looked steep, though hiking for us took around 30 minutes. The panorama from the viewpoint totally compensated us for the suffering at high altitude. Cerro Palla Kasha is the highest point in the southern part, so from there you can even have a view to the northern part of the island and the village of Yumani.

05:45 After the hike, we deserved lunch with a view! So we headed back to the village to find a perfect lunch spot. On the western road of the hill, there are many restaurants with a panorama to the lake. Our chosen restaurant was Restaurant Pachamama with its fantastic terrace and colourful flowers. The must-try dish is the local trout in Isla del Sol and around Lake Titicaca.

06:44 After the tasty trout and sunbathing, it was time to go to the harbour, which took 25 minutes to the port of Yumani through curvy streets and stairs of the village. The last part was the Inca Steps, more than 200 steps leading to the lakeside.

07:11 The boat departed at 3 am with us sitting on the upper deck again.

Copacabana & Isla Del Sol ???????? Backpacking Bolivia Travel Vlog

My final stop in Bolivia is Copacabana! Situated still at a very high altitude (????lol) on Lake Titicaca. I stayed at Hostal Florencia and met Harry and Tori and together we took a boat to Isla Del Sol and hiked over 10km across the island, visiting the ruins along the way. It was a fantastic day out but challenging with the altitude!

A complete guide to Copacabana and Lake Titicaca - Bolivia travel vlog | Aliz’s Wonderland

Copacabana is situated at Lake Titicaca, which is the world's largest navigable high-altitude lake with its 8372 km2, sitting at an altitude of 3812 m. The lake is situated between the mountains of Peru and Bolivia.
We travelled to Copacabana after 1,5-week travelling in Chile and Bolivia, so our 5 days there were very relaxed. Don’t worry, staying 3-4 days would be also enough to see the most significant spots around Copacabana.

Let’s see how we spent 5 days in Copacabana:

0:22 DAY 1 - TRAVELLING TO COPACABANA
Copacabana is approachable by taxi, rented car or as part of a tour. We chose the EASIEST AND CHEAPEST WAY and travelled there by bus from the Central Bus station in La Paz, which took 4 hours for us. We bought a bus ticket online on Tickets Bolivia, which offers transportation by multiple companies. Direct buses depart from La Paz at 7:30 am, 8 am and 1:30 pm.
After a 2-3 hours scenic drive we arrived at the boat station of Tiquina, where all passengers had to take off the bus, buy a boat ticket and cross the strait by a small boat. On the other side, we waited for our bus, which was transported by a little ferry.

Tickets Bolivia -
For more information about how to get there, prices and Copacabana read my blog post:

1:54 DAY 2 - A TRIP TO ISLAS FLOTANTES (FLOATING ISLANDS)
Islas Flotantes (Floating Islands) are located in Lake Titicaca and are accessible by boat from Copacabana. Tickets can be purchased at many places in Copacabana, though at tourist agencies it might be more expensive. We bought our return tickets in a kiosk at the lakeshore (at the end of Av 6 de Agosto).
During the 20 minutes ride, you can adore the snow-capped peaks of the Cordillera Real, green hills and blue vastness of the lake.

4:39 DAY 3 - DISCOVERING THE LAKESHORE
Copacabana sits between two hills, Cerro Calvário and Horca del Inca. The bay is home to many boats, so this part of the lake isn't recommended for swimming.
Trying out local dishes is part of travelling and discovering new cultures. THE MUST-TRY FOOD IN COPACABANA IS TROUT (trucha) and the perfect place to try it out is the lakeshore. Next to the harbour, you’ll find many kiosks serving trout. The menu and the prices are almost the same at every food stall.

5:12 DAY 4 - ISLA DEL SOL DAY TRIP
Isla del Sol is not just an ordinary island. It’s situated in Lake Titicaca and home to Inca ruins, scenic paths, cute llamas and other animals. You only have to enjoy this sacred atmosphere, get ready for high altitude and walk slowly.
During our Bolivian trip (March of 2020), ONLY THE SOUTHERN PART OF THE ISLAND WAS OPEN FOR VISITORS. Unfortunately, the northern and southern part had some differences again.
Read the blog post about our 1 day trip in Isla del Sol, Bolivia:
And watch the Isla del Sol travel video:

6:05 DAY 5 - RELAXING AND CLIMBING CERRO CALVARIO
The peak of Cerro Calvario dominates the lakeshore of Lake Titicaca at Copacabana. As I mentioned before, Copacabana lies at a high altitude, so WALKING AND CLIMBING CAN BE CHALLENGING.
The breathtaking panorama of the lake and the harbour will compensate for the exhausting hike. From the peak, you can also watch the sunset and its reflection on the surface of Lake Titicaca.

7:55 DAY 6 - TRAVELLING TO LA PAZ, EL ALTO AIRPORT
Buses depart from Plaza Sucre, the main square of Copacabana. For returning to La Paz, we chose a local bus, which wasn’t that comfortable but it stopped at El Alto, so we could reach the airport easier.

48 hours in LAKE TITICACA: From Copacabana to Isla Del Sol's breathtaking beauty!

48 hours in LAKE TITICACA: From Copacabana to Isla Del Sol's breathtaking beauty!

In this video we head out to tour the town of Copacabana and Lake Titicaca. We decided to do a two day tour from La Paz which was great because it took the planning aspect away from us for once but it did mean that things were a bit rushed.

We didn’t get a lot of say over timings so had to be pretty flexible with what we got to see and it involved a lot of climbing with heavy backpacks. It was an adventure and we did make it out onto the lake a few times and even chased the sunset and sunrise on Isla Del Sol. We would recommend doing this type of tour if you’re short on time like we were but it would be nice to go back one day and just explore the area at a slower pace.

A Day On Isla Del Sol - Copacabana Bolivia

Isla Del Sol is an Island on the huge Lake Titicaca. Lake Titicaca is South Americas largest lake situated at 3800m above seas level and is shared between Bolivia and Peru.

Bolivia is, for the most part, a mountain nation. After spending a few weeks exploring throughout the nation we made our way to Copacabana. Copacabana is a small beautiful town on the shores of Lake Titicaca where you can access Isla Del Sol.

Taking an hour and a half to get to the Island you can choose to do a day trip or spend a night or two, which can be expensive. We choose to do a day trip, and to be honest that is all you need.

This is what it looked like.

Hiking the Length of Isla Del Sol | Lake Titicaca & Copacabana | Bolivia's Birthplace of the Sun.

From La Paz, it is a three and half hour - including the ferry crossing at Tiquina - journey to (the original) Copacabana, the beachside resort on the shore of Bolivian Lake Titicaca. It was Easter Sunday, so things were as busy as it gets.

Ascended Calvario and La Inca del Horca on either side of town for panoramic views of the town and lake.

Then a ferry ride to Isla del Sol, stopping at Challapampa, where I overnighted after viewing sunset at Chincana ruins. Next day, trekked the Camino south to Yumani, the main town on Isla del Sol. Visited Palla Khasa high up, and Templo del Sol lower down.

Note: My video camera was stolen in La Paz the day before so I could only make this video our of still images.
