Occupied Guernsey - WWII

These beautiful islands will never forget their ugly past. A time of fear and suppression by a foreign power. But the beauty outshone the war and can be explored to this day.

----- Short History -----
- The military occupation of the Channel Islands lasted from 30 June 1940 until liberation on 9 May 1945.
- The last troops left the islands on 20 June, departing so quickly that bedding and half-consumed meals were left in Castle Cornet.
- The Channel Islands served no purpose to the Germans other than the propaganda value.
- British government decided that the Channel Islands were of no strategic importance and would not be defended. Thus they gave up the oldest possession of the Crown without firing a single shot.
- By the 21st of June it became apparent that they couldn’t evacuate everyone and so gave priority to special categories.
- Most evacuated children were separated from their parents. And some were sponsored by wealthy Americans, including one by the first lady.
- After the lieutenant governor evacuated, the bailiff took over the civil functions of government.

- The Germans didn’t realise the islands had been demilitarised.
- One of their reconnaissance flights mistook a line of tomato trucks for troop carriers and had them bombed (28th of June), killing many.
- On the 30th, a reconnaissance pilot landed on Guernsey to test their defences. The decision was later made that the islands were undefended. That evening a platoon of Luftwaffe airmen landed and were met by a Guernsey policeman who handed a letter, signed by the bailiff, stating that Guernsey had been declared an Open Island. These actions prevented the invasion plans that were about to commence.

- Soon after the occupation, Hitler ordered the islands to be reinforced as part of the Atlantic Wall.
- Among paid labour, the Germans transported over 16,000 slave workers to build the fortifications.
- Islanders were compelled to work, despite protests, but eventually the Germans agreed to the Hague Convention stating that no civilian could be compelled to work on military projects.
- The time zone and driving side of the road were changed to be in line with mainland Europe.

- The workers included forces from the Organisation Todt (7,000), slaves, soviet union slaves, and paid labour from the continent. Some resistance members signed up to gain access to intelligence.

- In 1942, against the advice of his Commander-in-Chief, Hitler ordered the Channel Islands become an “impregnable fortress”, directing 1/12 of the Atlantic Wall resources and 10% of the project's concrete and steel to them.
- Fortress Engineers established their HQ at Elizabeth College and stores were set up next to Vale Castle.
- 244,000 cubic meters of rock were extracted from the islands, more than the 225,000 that was extracted from the entire Atlantic Wall.
- Light railways were built to supply the coastal defences.
- The defences included tunnels, anti-tank sea walls, coastal casemates, artillery positions, artillery observation towers, radar units and a mass of trenches, minefields and barbed wire entanglements.
- Up to 250 strongpoints was demanded on Guernsey.
- They used standardised plans at hundreds of sites.
- The Battery Dollmann is one of four 22cm gun pits. With trenches, accommodation and ammunition bunkers. Its guns could reach 23km.
It, like the other batteries, had observation towers, fitted with range finding equipment. However, its system proved unusable with multiple enemies and was abandoned, making some of the towers redundant.
- Throughout the island many specialist bunkers were constructed for phones, power, radio, and command HQs.
- Some positions were camouflaged by part burying them, adding plants and trees, using paint or wire mesh.
- Dummy positions were also set up.

- The allies bypassed the islands due to their heavy fortification. This cut off their supply to France for food and other resources.
- It took months of negotiations but the Red Cross managed to bring in Red Cross parcels to help the starving islanders. Six trips in total with the last after liberation.

- The Germans announced to the Guernsey civilians on the 8th of May 1945 that The War Was Over.

- After the war bomb disposal removed over 69,000 mines.

Guernsey 1960s cine film

I apologise for the 'quality' of this video, it was just a quick 'production' while drinking tea, video of cine, taken many years ago by my father whilst on holiday in Guernsey.
Guernsey was then, and I am told still is, a beautiful holiday destination, with a rich and fascinating history. I still like to tell people that England is a colony of Guernsey, as it is the last bit of the old Dukedom of Normandy, and William was Duke of Normandy before he was King of England!
Watching this myself took me back to the darkened front room of the family home, with 'Uncle' Sid and Yvonne from next door, and 'Uncle' Vic and 'Aunty' Joyce from along the road watching our latest films. Cigarette smoke would fill the room, and Mum would moan about how it made the curtains smell for days.
The films would sometimes jam, and Dad would leap to the projector before the film got too badly burned.
Happy days.

A Look At Guernsey In The Channel Islands - Sun, Sea And German Bunkers

Our first time in Guernsey in the Channel Islands. Touring the island in the sun and exploring its rich history, especially the remains of the recent German Occupation during WWII.

We stayed in Les Rocquettes Hotel, St. Peter Port for 2 nights.

On the first full day we visited Fort Grey in Rocquaine Bay on the west coast of Guernsey. It is a Martello tower, cup and saucer design” built in the early 1800s.

In the afternoon Andrew Walker from ‘Festung Guernsey’ takes us on a tour of some of Guernsey’s German fortifications including the remains of the large site of Batterie Mirus. This was the largest gun emplaced on the Channel Islands and could fire a 250kg shell 38km.

On the last day, we went into St Peter Port, the capital of Guernsey and visited the 800-year-old Castle Cornet which overlooks the harbour. The castle itself contains five museums and four-period gardens.

WW2 German Underground Tunnels in Guernsey

This video shows the World War 2 German tunnels which can be found easily in Guernsey. They are as follows:

Talbot Valley,
Le Havelet - Val Des Terres,
St. Saviours,
German Underground Hospital,
Aquarium,
La Valette Museum.

Guernsey was the most fortified place in the whole of the Atlantik Wall. During World War 2 the Channel Islands were occupied for five years by Adolf Hitler's German Nazi forces.

In Guernsey there was 13,000 German troups at one point and thousands of Organisation Todt slave workers which mainly came from Poland. These slave workers were used to build hundreds of different German fortifications around Guernsey and had to live in terrible conditions and if they did not work they also did not get any food.

To build the tunnels they had to dig out thousands of tons of solid granite and many died in the process. It's rumoured that their bodies were just thrown into the setting concrete.

In 1944 twelve tunnels were under construction and two others were completed.

Guernsey was liberated on the 9th May 1945 and Liberation Day is celebrated every year on the 9th May. This video will be one of many uploaded during 2010 to celebrate 65 years of the Liberation Day.

----- Short History -----
- In 1066, when William Duke of Normandy became William I, King of England, the Channel Islands became possessions of the English Crown.
- In 1204, King John lost control of Normandy but the islands remained part of England.
- Following the loss of the Duchy of Normandy the tidal island was first fortified in the 13th century, between 1206 and 1256. This was to protect against the French.
- Timber and lead was sent from England to build the castle.
- At this time it consisted of a keep, a chapel, two courtyards and curtain walls.

- In 1338, the French captured the island and took Castle Cornet. They massacred the garrison stationed there.
- In 1340, the island was recaptured by the English but the castle was recaptured in 1345.
- The French had improved the defences of the castle.
- In 1358, the French captured the castle again, but only for a year. An island traitor was executed.

- In 1372, Owain Lawgoch a claimant to the Welsh throne, leading a free company on behalf of France, attacked Guernsey in an assault popularly called La Descente des Aragousais. He never managed to capture the castle as it was too well defended.
- But the French would capture it again in 1380 for a short time before being evicted again.

- The maintenance and garrison were paid for from revenues raised in the island by the Warden (Keeper of the Castle) under royal warrant.

- In the 16th century, with the advent of cannons, the castle was remodelled.
- In 1547, after the French captured Sark, they attacked Guernsey and the castle again, but were met with heavy cannon fire from the castle.

- In 1627, King Charles I granted additional rights to Guernsey in order to reduce the runnings costs of the castle by the Crown.

- During the English Civil Wars (1642–1651) the castle was Royalist, whilst the island was Parliamentarian.
- The castle fired an estimated 10,000 cannon balls into the town of St Peter Port. The Royal Court had to relocate to Elizabeth College as many buildings in the town had been destroyed.
- The commissioners of the island were captured and imprisoned in the castle. But they made a rope out of flex and managed to escape Carey Tower and return to the island.

- Jersey was Royalist and in 1651 fell to Parliamentarian forces. Whilst there, Nicholas Robert of Guernsey managed to recover the Crown of England, that belonged to Charles I, and deliver it to the Governor of Castle Cornet.

- In 1651, two years after the execution of King Charles I, Castle Cornet surrendered, the last Royalist stronghold to do so. The Royal Crown was returned to London.

- After the war the castle served as a prison for parliamentary leader Major-General John Lambert. A garden within the castle bears his name.
- It also served as official resident of the Governor of Guernsey until 1672. But in that year, a bolt of lightning struck the magazine of the castle and destroyed the Great Hall, Chapel and some living courters. Many were killed, including the governor's wife and mother. Soon after, the governor's residence was moved to the island and the tower was never rebuilt.

- By 1800, the castle was considered inadequate as a garrison and Fort George replaced Castle Cornet as the main barracks for the island.
- During the Napoleonic Wars, the castle was upgraded. It also ceased to be the only prison on the island after a prison at St James Street was built in 1811.
- The castle also became integrated into the breakwater from the island.

- During WWII a small German garrison occupied the castle. They added concrete modifications to it.
- After the war it ceased to be a prison for the first time in its history.
- In 1947, the Crown gave the castle to Guernsey as a token of loyalty during both World Wars.

Guernsey Island (Part One)

Kia Ora whanau, now todays vlog is a little different. Yes it is a travel vlog but I am in this location for work.

I had the opportunity to represent my engineering firm overseas in the UK to carry out some maintenance in a hospital on Guernsey Island. This was is the furthest from home I have ever been but man was it an experience. A lot of history on this island and nota location I would have thought to visit but I'm glad I can say that I have.

Check out the vlog, tell me what your favorite part was and keep your eyes peeled for part two!!

GUERNSEY Passport 1969 - passport history collector

Guernsey, British crown dependency and island, second largest of the Channel Islands. It is 30 miles (48 km) west of Normandy, France, and roughly triangular in shape. With Alderney, Sark, Herm, Jethou, and associated islets, it forms the Bailiwick of Guernsey. Its capital is St. Peter Port.

Old Guernsey passports are pretty rare nowadays!

TOM TOPOL is a passport history expert and author with several publications. His website passport-collector.com and his book LET PASS OR DIE are a goldmine on historic passports. Each travel document was an artwork, no passport looked the same because of the individual, beautiful handwriting, colorful stamps, visas, and, of course, the most curious passport pictures introduced roughly just 100 years ago.
