Palau is an island paradise standing up to the world

The tiny island of Palau is a remote, beautiful paradise and the rest of the world knows it. But existing in a connected world can put extreme stress on small countries. The nation of just 20,000 people has seen an influx of tourists recently, but that hasn’t necessarily been a good thing.

But visitors arriving by the tens of thousands from such behemoths as Japan, South Korea, and China, put considerable stress on Palau’s environment and economy.

Quartz News travels far into the Pacific to find out how the island nation of Palau is standing up for itself against the world’s superpowers.

Climate change never felt more real to my eyes until I arrived here in KIRIBATI - a small island nation in the Central Pacific Ocean.

The rising sea levels are quickly shrinking this country, which has a peak altitude of 3 meters. It's projected to be entirely underwater by the year 2100.

While many countries are feeling the impacts of climate change, nobody is more threatened right now than the 100,000+ residents of Kiribati.

The question now becomes, how do we prevent the people here from becoming climate refugees? The only 4 options I can think of are the following:

1. Build a higher sea wall (which will cost billions of USD)
2. Buy land overseas for them to relocate (will also cost a fortune)
3. Send more Kiribati citizens abroad (i.e. Australia and New Zealand) for jobs, and they can slowly adapt to a new life
4. Boost tourism in Kiribati so people can see firsthand the effects of climate change, which will also pump money back into the economy

Would love to get your thoughts on what we can do to help the wonderful people of Kiribati. I encourage you all to get creative and share your best solutions below. I will be reading and responding to as many comments as I can, and I encourage you to do the same. This is important.

Immigrants in Palau

Immigrants in Palau

Palau is an island country located in the western Pacific Ocean. It has a small population and a unique political and social structure. As of my knowledge cutoff in September 2021, Palau had a relatively small immigrant population compared to other countries. Most immigrants in Palau are temporary workers, primarily from the Philippines and other Pacific Island nations.

Palau has a Compact of Free Association with the United States, which allows Palauan citizens to live and work in the United States, and vice versa. This agreement has facilitated some migration between the two countries.

The government of Palau has implemented certain immigration policies to control the influx of immigrants. These policies prioritize job opportunities for Palauan citizens and aim to protect the culture and environment of the islands.

While I constantly try to find the positives in every place I visit, there are a few nations that I just simply didn't enjoy.

The country of BRUNEI is one of them.

I went to Brunei back in 2014, three years before I made videos, but my negative experiences in the country have stuck in my mind ever since. That, combined with its absurd human rights laws such as stoning to death LGBT members, I felt like this video needed to be shared with the world.

Have you ever visited any countries that you didn't enjoy? Please share below, I'm curious to know.

I CAN'T BELIEVE I MADE IT TO PALAU - COUNTRY #195!!! ???????? Only 2 countries left (Jamaica & Saudi Arabia) until I can officially say that I've visited every country in the world!

It feels wonderful to be back on the road again, after a few months of hanging back in the U.S. This trip to Palau is one that I've been looking forward to for a LONG TIME, and finally -- after an 18 month delay due to closed borders -- I was on one of the first commercial flights back to this lovely Pacific Island nation.

And guess what? I had the chance to meet the President of Palau at his office! He gave me 2 hours of his time and I was able to ask him so many of my burning questions.

What an adventure my first few days in Palau have been, and I can't wait to show you more of this pristine country over the next 4 weeks. Trust me when I tell you that these stories are going to blow your mind!

Paula Islands | Travel Guide

Welcome to Palau, a mesmerizing archipelago located in the western Pacific Ocean. Known for its pristine beaches, vibrant coral reefs, and rich cultural heritage, Palau offers visitors an unforgettable experience in paradise.

Palau's natural beauty is unparalleled. The Rock Islands, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, boast stunning limestone formations surrounded by crystal-clear waters. Visitors can explore these picturesque islands by kayak or boat, immersing themselves in the serene beauty of the Pacific.

Beneath the surface, Palau's waters teem with life. The vibrant coral reefs are home to a diverse array of marine species, including colorful fish, graceful sea turtles, and majestic manta rays. Snorkeling and diving enthusiasts flock to sites like Blue Corner and German Channel to witness the underwater spectacle up close.

Palau's cultural heritage is as rich as its natural beauty. Traditional practices, such as weaving and storytelling, are still alive today, passed down through generations. Visitors can learn about Palauan culture at the Belau National Museum, which showcases artifacts and exhibits highlighting the island's history and traditions.

Palau also bears witness to a significant chapter in history. During World War II, the islands were the site of fierce battles between Allied and Japanese forces. Today, visitors can explore remnants of this turbulent past, including bunkers, aircraft wrecks, and the historic Peleliu Battlefield, where thousands lost their lives.

Despite its remote location, Palau is at the forefront of environmental conservation. In 2015, the government established the Palau National Marine Sanctuary, creating one of the world's largest protected areas. This initiative aims to safeguard Palau's marine ecosystems for future generations, ensuring that its natural wonders remain intact for years to come.

From its breathtaking landscapes to its vibrant culture and commitment to conservation, Palau offers visitors a truly unforgettable experience. Whether exploring pristine beaches, diving into underwater realms, or delving into its rich history, Palau promises adventure, beauty, and discovery at every turn.

The Story of Storyboard and Hijikata Hisakatsu

In celebration of the long-lasting bond between Japan and Palau, this video is created to depict the story of the storyboard in Palau and HIJIKATA Hisakatsu, the artist who introduced the storyboard to Palau in the late 1920s. We hope that this video will further deepen friendship and goodwill between our two countries.
