Made of natural clay, straw and wood, the windmills have been milling grain for an estimated 1,000 years. The vertical axis design is probably similar to the windmills invented by the Persians around 500 C.E.—a design that slowly spread through the world and which was later adapted by the Dutch and others.
There are approximately 30 windmills scattered throughout the area and can reach heights of 15-20 meters. They are located on hilltops—overlooking the city’s old cemetery—which can get the maximum of the wind power. With the speed of the wind at times reaching 120 kilometers per hour, the windmills are established perpendicular to the direction of the wind flow to maximize its output.
Each of the windmills of Nashtifan comprises eight chambers, with each chamber housing six blades. As the area’s strong, steady wind turns the blades, it starts moving the grindstones.
The region is so well known for its wind that the name Nashtifan is derived from words that mean “storm’s sting”.

در روستای نشتیفان در منطقه خواف حدود 40 آسیاب بادی (اسباد) ردیف شده اند که در مسیر بادهای 120 روزه سیستان قرار گرفته اند. پره های چوبی آنها توسط باد بحرکت در آمده نیروی حاصل را به سنگ منتقل نموده به آرد کردن گندم ها می پردازند .

آسبادها، قدیمی‌ترین آسیای بادی عمودمحور در جهان هستند که در قسمت شرق ایران ساخته شده‌اند. با توجه به اسناد تاریخی موثق، خاستگاه این آسبادها در منطقه سیستان است. آسبادها در گذشته رکن اصلی دوام و پایداری معیشت نیاکان شرق ایران بوده‌اند و همچنین نمونه بارزی از معماری سنتی ایران با رویکردی پایدار، استفاده از مصالح بوم آورد و انرژی پاک باد، به‌شمار می‌آیند. به دلیل ویژگی‌های خاص و منحصر به فرد آسبادها و با توجه به جنبه‌های عملکردی و زیبا شناسانه آسبادها، بررسی آنها از اهمیت خاصی برخوردار است. آسبادها در شرق ایران، خراسان جنوبی و رضوی و سیستان، از نظر گونه به چند دسته تقسیم میشوند و تنوع و گستردگی مخصوص به خود را دارند.
ایرانیان از دیرباز انواع آسبادها را بر اساس شرایط اقلیمی که در آن می‌زیستند، برای آرد کردن گندم و تهیه نان که یکی از مهم‌ترین غذاهای روزانه‌شان به‌شمار می‌آمد، احداث کرده‌اند. هر چند که این سازه‌های کهن معماری ایرانی در گذشته نقش حیاتی در زندگی مردم داشته‌اند، امروزه با گسترش صنعت و تکنولوژی از رونق افتاده‌اند. با این حال ویژگی‌های معماری و فنی-مهندسی بسیار ارزشمندی در آنها نهفته‌است که می‌توانند به عنوان میراثی از دانش نیاکان در بهره‌برداری مناسب از اقلیم و شرایط محیطی به نسل‌های آینده معرفی گردند. متأسفانه تاکنون، مطالعات محدود و انگشت شماری در زمینه شناخت آسبادها صورت گرفته‌است. کمبود پنین مطالعاتی زمانی آشکار می‌شود که انرژی‌های تجدیدناپذیر رو به اتمام هستند. حال آنکه استفاده از باد که یکی از مظاهر انرژی خورشیدی است، در مناطق بادخیز به عنوان ابتدایی‌ترین منبع برای دیگر اشکال انرژی سابقه‌ای دیرینه دارد. بادهای ۱۲۰ روزه سیستان معروف‌ترین بادهای محلی در کشور ایران است که از اوایل خردادماه تا اواخر شهریورماه در منطقه وسیعی از نواحی شرقی ایران می‌وزد. آسبادها به عنوان یکی از روش‌های تولید انرژی، شاهدی در بهره‌گیری از امکانات محیطی بوده‌اند.

These ancient buildings in Nashtifan, near the city of Khaaf, bordering afghanistan (in which people are still residing) each have working wind mills, to generate energy for wheat grinding. The same concept is used today to generate electricity.

Greek island of Patmos (Πατμος), the windmills of Patmos island in Greece. On a very windy day, let's go visit the beautiful windmills on the spectacular Greek island of Patmos (Πατμος) in the Aegean sea. Built east of the Holy Monastery of Patmos, on the top of the hill with view of the sea, the three windmills of Chora of Patmos (the Old Town of the island of Patmos) were fully restored in 2010 and they can be characterized as another jewel of the island of Patmos, which was awarded by Europa Nostra.
The two windmills of Patmos island that you see here (which date back to 1588) fell into disuse in the late 1950s, when the industrial milling replaced the traditional production.
Patmos (Greek: Πάτμος) is a small Greek island in the Aegean Sea. It is the location of the vision given to the disciple John in the Book of Revelation in the New Testament, and where the book was written.

Already in the 15th century the Portugese put these simple, easy to build and easy to handle windmills on the top of their mountains. End 19th century the region of Odemira had about 100 of them. The sound you hear are the flutes on the strings between the mill blades. It tells the miller everything.
Windmill Project Major Refurbishment │ Novus Property Solutions
We joined forces with ENGIE and Places for People to complete a major refurbishment project for a scheme that provides temporary accommodation for homeless young families in Sheffield, as part of our commitment to delivering social value.
The community centre at the heart of the Windmill Project is currently housed in a temporary Portakabin building and was in need of revitalising. It has now been completely stripped back and refurbished to create a warm and welcoming space for the vulnerable women and their families to meet.
The project involved a complete refurbishment of the Community Centre and landscaping of the garden area. Externally this involved installing new windows and doors, external wall insulation and a new roofline. Internally this involved remodelling the layout of the internal areas including the installation of a new communal kitchen along with new toilets, suspended ceiling, lighting, heating system, flooring and a full redecoration including murals.
The land to the side of the existing Portakabin community centre has also been transformed into an attractive patio area and garden for the women and their families to enjoy as part of the project.
Windmills of Cambridgeshire: Hemingford Grey Windmill
Hemingford Grey Windmill was built of gault brick in 1820, and is situated on an earthen mound. An inscribed plaque above the door shows the date and the builder's initials - JW. It originally had four sails and was the last working mill in Cambridgeshire. It is Grade II listed and at the time of this video being filmed was up for sale.
Myself and my sister have had a lifelong interest in tall and interesting buildings such as windmills, and aim to continue to go round many of the windmills in the region and other counties in England.

Visit PATMOS, Best Greek island: 18th century WINDMILLS working once again
Greek island of Patmos (Πατμος), the windmills of Patmos island in Greece. Let's go to the beautiful Greek island of PATMOS and let's visit the historic windmills on the hill opposite the Holy Abbey of Saint John (Saint Ioannis) the Theologian. This hill in Patmos is dominated by three imposing traditional windmills, the cloth blades of which turn again after 50 years of disuse and abandonment. These windmills in Patmos, that in the 1700s were dedicated to the Abbey, were abandoned in 1950 and fell into disuse after 400 and more years of serving the residents of island. The instigator of the restoration and their re-operation was the Swiss philhellinist banker Charles Pictet, co financed by the Stavros Niarchos institution and other private individuals which once again give life to the windmills of Patmos. Today, only the northern windmill can be visited (the one that it is on the right as you see them from the rear) which has been restored completely.

5x7 miniature Painting Gary Garrett - FOGGY NEW ROSE CREEK
For 10 years now, I have thought about painting or drawing the moss-draped cypress trees of New Rose Creek AKA Christopher Creek, and finally had the opportunity with this morning's fog. Painted 1-9-08 on a miniature 5x7 Clayboard (brandname) panel... nice panel for detail work, but this size makes it still difficult to achieve a nice final output. Using a red-burgundy undercoat to add some warmth, as this was a challenge to interject just the right amount of color into an image otherwise void of color.
It was time-lapsed using a Sony TRV25 in INTERVAL mode (1/2 second every 30 seconds).
