If You're Foreign Don't Walk The Streets Here ???????? (#105)

If you're one of the rare souls who decides to take a trip to Guyana, the least visited country in the Americas, chances are your first stop will be Georgetown, the capital city. With a population of only around 200,000, it looks and feels almost like a small town. But this city is no joke. With the newfound oil wealth driving prices up, crime is starting to skyrocket. Although everyone in Guyana suffers from theft, American oil workers and Chinese merchants in particular are hunted in the streets by muggers. I was no oil worker, but I was assumed to be one.

Guyana Georgetown | Eco-Tourism | Oil | Biggest waterfall in the world | Diana Hernandez TV

Guyana Georgetown | Eco-Tourism | Oil | biggest waterfall in the world |Diana Hernandez TV
located in South America Guyana is the only English speaking country
with the Biggest untouched eco-tourism in the world, the largest present-day oil find and it also happens to have the second-highest single drop waterfall in the world, the Kaieteur Falls. All the amazing Guyanese food is featured on my Instagram. Link down below as well as how they drive and more local adventures. I'm doing Easter fasting so there are a lot of things I was not able to taste.

Guyana is a small country located in the northern part of South America, nestled between Surinam, Venezuela, and Brazil. It's also the only English-speaking country on the continent. The local Amerindians also speak Creole, a mix of English, African, Arawakan, and Dutch. Guyana still reflects its British and Dutch colonial past also the Hindu culture is very prevalent in Guyana.

The largest city and capital of Guyana, Georgetown is also known as the “Garden City of the Caribbean” and serves as the retail, administrative, and financial services center of the country.
The capital city attracts tourists from all around the world because of its beautiful colonial infrastructures and performing art scene.

Guyana is perfect for food lovers just like me. They cook food inspired by six different ethnic groups. From spicy curry to indigenous typical dishes. I'm so in love with Guyanese food that I will try to make a video just about their fantastic food.

If you are looking for an Adventure try Lake Mainstay Resort, Rewa eco-lodge or try the Kaiteur falls.

Legendary Guyanese FOOD TOUR in Georgetown, Guyana!! Exotic Cow Heel Soup and More!!

???????? VISIT GUYANA:
???????? DISCOVER GUYANA:
???? VISIT MY TRAVEL BLOG:

My third morning in Guyana dawned bright and early and kicked off with an unforgettable food tour of iconic Guyanese favorites!

My guide Stacey from Visit Guyana and I started at Sunny & Sweetie Roti Shop, which is known for having some of the best Creole food in Guyana. It’s a nice, open-air shop that offers saltfish and bake, chicken curry with coconut choka, dal, provisions, okra, and more. We ordered a bit of everything!

????SUBSCRIBE TO MY NEWSLETTER:
???? MY LINKTREE:

We had a mix of breakfast and non-breakfast items, including pachownie (curried sheep belly) with roti, saltfish and bake, fish choka, baigan choka, and chicken curry with dal and rice.

We started with the bake & saltfish. The fish is fried with onions and tomatoes and you eat it with the bake, which is a fluffy bread. It’s the perfect breakfast on the go. I could eat it every day!

The baigan choka is a smoky roasted eggplant. It was amazing! Eggplant is my favorite vegetable in the world. I loved the pepper in it! Next was the fish choka with roti, which contained a splash of lime juice. I tried a wiri wiri pepper with it, which added a nice kick. I loved the green onions and diced fish!

The pachownie was so meaty, tender, and soft! You pair it with roti. I loved Guyanese roti, which is flakier than the roti I was used to having everywhere else. It had a very organ-like flavor.

Next was the chicken curry with the dal and rice. Everything was incredible together. I loved the coconut choka mixed with the dal and rice. It was perfect together. Adding a bit of pepper sauce gave it a kick, but not too much! My favorite of all the dishes was the pachownie!

Next, we drove 15 inutes to the most famous bakery in the country, Maggie’s Snackette. Inside, they were making tons of pastries, including pine tarts (pineapple pastries). Simon showed me how to fold one properly! They also made cheese rolls with a cheese spread inside. They make between 1000-1200 pastries per day here!

Then, I attempted to make a cheese roll before it was time for us to try them. This place has been around for over 20 years and they’ve perfected their recipes.

The pine tart was flaky and buttery, with the incredible pineapple filling adding a nice sweetness and acidity. I loved it! The cheese roll had the same dough but the filling was hot and cheesy. It had melted right into the pastry! I liked that it was fresh and piping hot, but I liked the pine tart better.

The chicken patty was basically a little pie containing shredded chicken, corn, and other vegetables. It was small but overloaded with filling!

After that, we headed to our final stop of the morning, German’s Restaurant, which is a buffet-style restaurant. They’re famous for their soups. They had three: chicken soup, cow heel soup, and beef soup. You can also have dumplings and provisions, or you can mix the cow heel and beef soups if you want.

I started with mauby, a drink made from tree bark. It was fragrant and refreshing. I followed it with their cow heel soup. It’s a thick, hearty soup containing potatoes, cassava, duff, and cow heel. It’s a great pick-me-up! I really liked the gelatinous cow heels.

Finally, we ended with metemgee, which contains fried fish, duff, plantains, steamed onions, and coconut broth on the side. We added the broth, which blew my mind. The duff was nice and soft, and I loved the cassava. This was real comfort food!

Guyana Travel Video Guide

Guyana Travel Video Guide: Guyana is now the third-smallest country in South America after Suriname and Uruguay. The name Guyana (from Arawak Wayana) means Land of many waters. It is related to the name Uruguay: River of the colorful birds, another country in South America.

Described by its own tourism association as 'Conradian' and 'raw,' Guyana is a densely forested country with a dark reputation of political instability and interethnic tension. While politics aren't making things brighter, underneath the headlines of corruption and economic mismanagement is a joyful and motivated mix of people who are trying to bring the spectacular natural attributes of this country to their full ecotourism potential.

10 Things to Do in Guyana

Get more Tips here!
Guyana is one of those destinations you wouldn't think as first on the list. However, this Caribbean country will surprised you for sure. Have a look of the things you can do there.

1) Spot the local wildlife
Not only the landscapes are beautiful, the fauna of Guyana is impressive. You should go there and it will surprise you with unique animals such as an anteater, a giant river otters, a harpy eagle, cock-of-the rock birds, black caymans and even a jaguar.

2) Go hiking
Althought the weather is very hot and wet, it's still a must do in Guyana. You can go to the Dolomites. Sometimes it has hard paths that will test your resistance. But in the end it will worth it. After a long day of hiking, you can always reward you with a nice meal, right?

3) Go on a boat ride
The best way to move around Guyana is by boat. If you go to the Rupununi rivers you won't regret it at all. Its local flora and fauna will amaze you as well as the beautiful landscapes that will surround you all the way, and make you feel alive.

4) Explore Georgetown
It's capital is a place you shouldn't miss. I's a colorful city full of local markets such as Bourda and Starbroek Market. Also, St. George’s Cathedral is one of the top Guyana tourist attractions and a must see. Plus a lot of more places to see. So, don't forget about it.

5) Walk through the forest
Well, taking into account its big jungle, of course, we recomendo you to go there and explore it. For sure, it will be kind of a new feeling for you. Inside the jungle birdwatching is a must do. But don't forget about the insects and muddy ground. Go prepared or don't go. We warned you...

6) Don't forget the canopy of Iwokrama
The Iwokrama Rainforest is a great way to appreciate the nature. You'll find a series of suspension bridges hoisted 30 meters above the forest floor from where where you could take the best pictures ever. The starting point is located at about 1 km from the lodge, via a walk in the forest and a staircase of around 160 steps.

7) Go to Kaieteur Falls
These are nothing like the Iguazu Falls or the Victoria Falls which are already wonderful. These falls will blow your mind with their spectacular views. The easiest way to go there is to taking a small plane in Georgetown, or you can always do a 5-day overland journey up river and go hiking.

8) Try the local food
Guyana melts different cultures in its food, such as Caribbean, Indian... and that will only get you licking your plate because of this absolutely delicious food full of tropical fruit and vegetables. However, keep in mind that the word “bake” in fact means fried dough of bread so that you won't have any misunderstanding

9) Sleep in hammocks
This is how most of the indigenous communities sleep and you should try it too. This experience is like being one to one with nature, alone in the dark, in harmony with the environment. It's one of the most special sensations that you can experience. Just do it!

10) Go to Rewa
Located in the North Rupununi region of Guyana, you must take an hour and 15 minutes flight on a 13 seater and a one hour boat ride along the Rupununi River, because it's completely isolated: no cars; no phone and no internet connection. But this is one of the most beautiful places to visit in Guyana to appreciate the wild nature and outdoor activities.

Would you ever thought you could do all of these in Guyana?
