A Tourist's Guide to Djibouti

I fly into this seldom visited east African nation. For my first day, I amble around Djibouti City, taking in the sights, sounds and chaos. Day two sees me driving West to Lake Assal, a huge salt lake that is Africa's lowest point.

Djibouti
Country in East Africa
Djibouti, on the Horn of Africa, is a mostly French- and Arabic-speaking country of dry shrublands, volcanic formations and Gulf of Aden beaches. It's home to one of the saltiest bodies of water in the world, the low-lying Lake Assal, in the Danakil Desert. The nomadic Afar people have settlements along Lake Abbe, a body of saltwater featuring chimneylike mineral formations. ― Google

Have you ever heard of the country called DJIBOUTI? If not, don't feel embarrassed... because it's a very tiny country in the Horn of Africa that gets minimal tourism -- roughly 70,000 visitors per year.

Over the last 2 days, I have explored every facet of the capital & biggest city called Djibouti City. I find this place to be the most interesting country in Africa.

Here are some of my quick realizations:

- It's VERY EXPENSIVE -- I have spent more than $400 in the last 2 days and I haven't done much other than walk around, take a few taxis, eat 4 meals & sleep (keep in mind my visa was $90 and my hotel was $105).

- Walking around the streets feels very much like France, from the colonization period that started in 1884 and ended in 1977. The people here speak French (first), Arabic (second) and English (third, if any at all).

- There is a LOT OF SECURITY everywhere -- police/military guards standing on every corner (literally) with giant guns strapped to their backs. It is kind of crazy and very intimidating, but safe.

- About a quarter of Djibouti's population (~250,000 people) are living in extreme poverty, which is more extreme than you'd think given that this country is so expensive. A massive contrast between rich & poor.

All of my thoughts on this mysterious country, and more, are in this video. Have you ever been to Djibouti?

I really hope you enjoyed this vlog, it's about my experience, my vacation.

TOP 10 Things to do in Djibouti, Africa 2023!

TOP 10 Things to do in Djibouti, Africa 2023!

Djibouti, Africa is an amazing place to visit in Africa. If you want to know top 10 what to do in Djibouti or you need a travel guide, please keep watching.

Moving on to number 5, we have the desert excursion in the Grand Bara: Visiting the Grand Bara in Djibouti is a captivating desert excursion that promises awe-inspiring beauty and adventure. Immerse yourself in a vast expanse of towering sand dunes, an undulating landscape that stretches as far as the eye can see. With camel trekking, sandboarding, and the chance to witness a breathtaking sunset, the Grand Bara offers a truly unforgettable and surreal desert experience.

At number 4, we recommend Relaxing on the beaches of Djibouti: With their pristine shores along the Red Sea, these beaches offer a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The crystal-clear waters, soft sands, and gentle sea breeze create the perfect ambiance for relaxation. Whether you want to bask in the sun, swim in the refreshing sea, or simply enjoy a peaceful stroll, Djibouti's beaches provide a tranquil and rejuvenating experience.

At number 3, we highly recommend a visit to the ancient town of Tadjoura: The ancient town of Tadjoura in Djibouti offers a captivating journey back in time. With its narrow streets, traditional architecture, and rich history, Tadjoura immerses visitors in the authentic atmosphere of a bygone era. Explore landmarks like the Tadjoura Mosque and the Sultan's Palace, interact with friendly locals, and experience the charm of this historic port town nestled on the picturesque Gulf of Tadjoura.

Now, let's unveil number 2 on our list—the Day Forest Reserve: Home to a diverse range of animal species, including antelopes, zebras, baboons, and numerous bird species, it provides an opportunity to witness the beauty of African wildlife up close. Exploring the reserve through safari adventures allows visitors to connect with nature, appreciate biodiversity, and create unforgettable memories in this remarkable East African destination.

Finally, securing the number 1 spot on our list is Enjoying scuba diving at the Seven Brothers Islands: This pristine and remote diving destination offers a mesmerizing underwater world teeming with vibrant coral reefs, colorful fish, and a wide array of marine species. The untouched and unexplored nature of the islands guarantees an unforgettable diving experience that will leave you in awe of Djibouti's hidden aquatic treasures.

Don't try to vlog in Djibouti (My experience in the most camera-phobic country I've ever visited) ????????

From Ethiopia, I headed north to the small nation of Djibouti, perched on the Red Sea & Gulf of Aden directly across from Yemen, on the horn of Africa. I had been so excited to begin my journey here - but my enthusiasm quickly faded when I realized that this is no country for a travel vlogger (I should have known this, given Drew Binsky's experiences here on his trip). Everywhere I turned, I was accosted by unfriendly, aggressive Police officers who resorted to intimidation and bribery in order for me to continue filming my experiences in the diminutive capital of Djibouti City.

The Djiboutian locals that I met were invariably kind and understanding - they being the unfortunate victims of their own corrupt police, which are highly averse to tourism and tourists in general. The constant threats of fines and possible jail time completely ruined my two days in this small nation. I am hopeful that, should the people of Djibouti demand it, the corruption that plagues the nation (and that causes tourists to flee) will be no more, and the nation would be a tourist-friendly haven in the horn of Africa. Until then, this country is best skipped by the solo traveler.

I mean no disrespect to the people of Djibouti - I sympathize with them that you Djiboutians to live in a country where the Police serve to ruin the nation's economy by driving tourism from their country. Please know, these are just my own experiences - others may experience something very different.

Djibouti City is the capital of Djibouti, in the Horn of Africa. It’s known for its 19th-century architecture and the port at the entrance to the Red Sea.

In the European Quarter, Place Menelik has whitewashed French colonial buildings and Moorish arcades lined with cafes and shops. In the African Quarter, the central market sells fruit, vegetables, and spices. The early-20th-century Hamoudi Mosque is nearby.

Surviving the World's Most Expensive City (Luanda)

WHO KNEW that the world's most expensive city for expats and tourists is Luanda, Angola?!

That's right -- it's not New York or London or Singapore or Dubai.... Not even close. It's Luanda Angola --, and if you don't believe me, you can ask BBC News, CNN and The Guardian.

I am not kidding you that I just saw a 13'' Macbook Pro listed at $4,200 at an electronics store Luanda -- I just bought the exact same computer in Arizona for less than half that price!

After spending the last 3 days in Luanda,, I've been surprised in many ways... but none more than the outrageous prices. You can learn all about it in this video.

Just curious -- Did anyone about this before watching this video? Or is this totally news to you?

Lac Assal - A day trip from Djibouti City. A journey to the lowest and hottest place on earth.

Ever heard of Djibouti. Well it is a small country in East Africa. With neighbours like Somalia, Eritrea and Yemen it is not well know as a holiday destination ! Actually Djibouti sees very few travellers except for the whale shark season. It is one of the best places to spot these gentle giants. And if you have a day to spend without diving before flying out we highly recommend a day trip to the lowest and hottest place on earth ! However we do recommend to visit from November till March since then the temperatures are more comfortable. The landscapes are amazing and you might get to meet the local Nomads heading their cattle and Camels. In old times Lac Assal was the start of an ancient trade route where nomads would transport salt from the lake for trade to South Africa or north to Egypt.

Enjoy our video and also checkout our Lac Abbe video if you really like to go off the beaten track!

Filmed with the DJI Mavic Air.

Schon mal was von Dschibuti gehört.

How Safe Is Djibouti for Travel?

Full safety review:

Djibouti is a country located in East Africa, bordered by Eritrea to the north, Ethiopia to the west and south, and Somaliland to the southeast, and with the Gulf of Aden lies to the east.

The biggest part of the country, however, is just vast wasteland with no arable land.

Overall in general, Djibouti is relatively safe to visit. Expect both petty and violent crime, and scammers everywhere. Apply all precaution measures to minimize the chances of something going wrong.
