A Tour of Panguna Copper Mine in Bougainville, Papua New Guinea

#panguna #bougainville #papuanewguinea

Panguna in Bougainville, Papua New Guinea in 2018.

It was a privilege to be shown around Panguna town, mine and surroundings by a local in 2018. After living in nearby Arawa for two-years, this was my first proper visit to the area and it was a pleasure to experience, hear stories and talk to locals.

I visited PANGUNA MINE nearly 3 decades after it closed | Bougainville, Papua New Guinea. In 2018, after a couple of years living in nearby Arawa, I had an opportunity to visit and explore Panguna mine, which closed its operation in 1989, nearly 3 decades earlier.

Copy of Longyear at Bougainville!

Drilling for copper on Bougainville Island in 1964 using the revolutionary new Longyear Triple Tube Wireline Core Barrel specially developed to properly assess the quality of the very broken copper orebody in the highlands of this mountainous and remote island. Shows spectacular aerial views of this beautiful, rugged island and the huge success of the Longyear Triple Tube Core Barrel right from its first use drilling deep into the broken orebody! For the first time, it enabled the high copper content of the very rich orebody to be determined and a decision made on going ahead with develoment of the hugely valuable copper mine in this very difficult and politically unsettled location. The tribal conflict of the Bougainville Revolution brought operations to a close shortly after this film was made and the orebody is today one of the world's richest unmined copper deposits.
Sadly, unreliable Eastmancolor was used for printing this copy of the original film and the print has faded badly with loss of the reds and blue/greens making it almost monochrome now.

POKPOK ISLAND: Autonomous Region of Bougainville x Papua New Guinea

Bakawari Island, also known as Pokpok, is just off the coast of Bougainville, located near the Kieta Wharf in Central Bougainville.
It is only a 5-minute boat ride from the mainland to the island and most people use canoes to go back and forth.
Pokpok is made up of two large villages which are located back to back.
Facing the mainland is Pokpok village and at her back, facing the vast Solomon Sea is Sisirai. This magical island and its surroundings are just unimaginable. It's a place to snorkel, go diving and also do a little bit of trekking and the best part is water skiing.

Panguna Mine Visit Part I.m4v

In November 2010 i travelled up to the Panguna Mine in Arawa, Bougainville. This mine was an important issue that led to the Bougainville crisis. This is part 1 of the journey and features travelling up the road and the seeing the ruins here. Part II is when i was actually at the Panguna township and Part 11 is the mine itself, with an awesome intro by Dominic Ita playing an accordian ontop of the ruins. This is the moment overlooking the giant open pit Panguna Mine. You can see the blue copper in water and the walls of the mine, giant trucks and drill machines lay rusty and idle. Hope you enjoy this moment, it was an awesome time for me.
