The Sámi People in Northern Scandinavia | ❄ They live in Temperatures as low as -30° Celsius!

Life above the Arctic Circle: DW's Diana Pineros visits the Sámi, an indigenous people in northern Europe, where it's icy cold in winter. The Sámi have been reindeer herders for centuries. To this day, many members of the Sámi community remain true to their culture and live in harmony with nature. How long do you think you'd last in those kind of temperatures?

Does flying less actually help tackle climate change?

If you’ve ever questioned whether you can actually make any difference in tackling climate change, I’m hoping this video will help. And more specifically I address whether flying less actually makes any difference.

A few years ago I quit flying for holidays and since then whenever I go away I travel by land or sea, mainly by train or ferry. I’m hoping that by showing how much more of an adventure it is to take the train rather than flying will inspire others to travel this way.

If you’re interested in learning more about sustainable travel and seeing what a flight-free holiday looks like I will be uploading more videos in the future which explore both.

For now though I hope you enjoy this video and see you soon!

Beware of THIS in New Zealand!

Did you expect this in New Zealand? When you come to New Zealand, you'll be shocked to see gangs. Gangs in New Zealand are so unafraid of the Police that they ride obnoxiously loud motorcycles so you can hear them a mile away.

They even wear a uniform which includes a gang patch, so you know which gang they're from.

This is how open and obvious organised crime is in New Zealand. And for visitors like my wife, it's shocking.

If you stay away from them, they won't bug ya. But the reality is gangs are known for the drug trade, murder, theft, violence against women, and the list goes on.

There are numerous gangs in New Zealand, of varying criminality, organisation and ethnicity, including outlaw motorcycle gangs, street gangs and ethnically based gangs. A chapter of the Hells Angels motorcycle club was formed in Auckland in 1961, the first Hells Angels chapter outside the US.

Soon after, the Mongrel Mob formed in Hastings and Wellington, developing into a predominantly Māori and Pacific Islander gang and having the largest membership in the country.

Through the 1960s and 1970s, other outlaw motorcycle clubs and ethnically based gangs formed, including another predominantly Māori gang, Black Power (not related to the African-American movement), which grew to rival the Mongrel Mob. from Wikipedia.

On the afternoon of 4 November, VisitScotland delivered an international-facing event that was attended by 185 online delegates from 50 countries around the world, from Norway and Vietnam to the US and Mauritius.

The event, led by our Industry & Destination Development directorate, enabled an interactive forum to capture the opportunities and challenges of achieving net zero in tourism.

We partnered on the event with Tourism Declares, The Future of Tourism Coalition and NECSTouR, a network of 39 European tourism authorities committed to sustainability.

Earlier in the day, the Glasgow Declaration for Climate Action in Tourism was launched, an initiative to galvanise the global travel and tourism industry to commit to a decade of climate action.

This afternoon event was designed to build on this and create a dynamic opportunity for leading tourism stakeholders around the globe to highlight good practice and innovation on the journey to net zero, while exploring the actions, enablers and barriers to achieving it. None of us individually hold all the answers, but collectively we can share our knowledge and accelerate climate action.

Circling the Midnight Sun by James Raffan

Episode 1: “Circling the Midnight Sun” by James Raffan is based on his book by the same title, which will take you on a rollicking journey around the world at the Arctic Circle to learn about the critical connection between culture and climate change. Named in 2020 by the Royal Canadian Geographical Society as one of the 90 most influential explorers in the nation’s recorded history, James owes a great debt to his travelling companions, particularly the Indigenous Peoples of the circumpolar world.

ETOA Webinar | Carbon curious? Climate action and tourism

Tourism depends on discretionary spend – whose benefits are sorely missed in Europe, especially from long-haul markets. Some sectors may never recover: the volume of business class seats never returned to pre financial crisis levels. Widespread adoption of video-conferencing, tight budgets and risk averse company polices will all play their part. But there is strong demand for leisure travel, and volumes will build back up. Hydrogen-powered jets and carbon-neutral ships may be a credible option from an engineering perspective, but current fleets will be in use for years, and the required investment to fund transition is unprecedented.

While companies are focused on survival, policy makers are looking ahead to 2050, by when the EU intends to be carbon neutral. This will be driven by regulation, tax and consumer choice, as well as investment. The European Commission recently increased its carbon emissions reduction goals to 55% by 2030, as compared to 1990 levels. The EU’s Green Deal, together with strategic Recovery and Resilience funding and more targeted measures, will have sustainability at the top of the agenda. Science and data, newly prominent in Covid-19 management, will gain influence.

With extreme weather events becoming more common, climate action is not a fringe activity: it is a pragmatic, evidence-based response to an urgent problem. In this webinar we will hear from Intrepid, an Australian operator with significant business in Europe; Tourism Declares a Climate Emergency, an initiative supporting travel and tourism businesses develop their climate strategy; Fair Climate Fund, a carbon-offsetting specialist, and the UNWTO on measuring the sustainability of tourism. From client voice to carbon taxes, we will explore what is driving the climate agenda for tourism, how industry may respond, and how to measure progress.

Panellists:
-Susanne Etti PhD, Intrepid Travel
-Gert Crielaard, Fair Climate Fund
-Jeremy Smith, Tourism Declares a Climate Emergency
-Clara van der Pol, UNWTO

ETOA Webinar | Climate action and tourism declaration to delivery

ETOA’s new sustainability partner, Travelife, will join its other partners NECSTouR and Tourism Declares a Climate Emergency to discuss the the Glasgow Declaration, and how its commitments should turn into action.

This new consensus-building initiative commits its signatories to climate action plans that will make progress along five pathways: measure; decarbonise; regenerate; collaborate; finance.

Without change, the tourism industry as well as the wider ecosystem will become more vulnerable. To retain a safe space for tourism to remain a resilient job-generator across Europe the sector will have to change.

This will take place within system transformation across the economy: tourism is not isolated. Its reduction targets depend on efficiency gains in transport, power generation, food distribution and accommodation.

It will also be driven by demand as consumers become more interested in the consequences of their discretionary spend. The imperatives of competitiveness and carbon transition increasingly converge.

Business, still under acute stress, needs support. Finance will be required from EU and national governments, crisis recovery funding administered by regions, and from long-term infrastructure programmes.

Should I offset my flight? | Everything I know about carbon offsetting

If you’ve ever asked yourself “should I offset my flight?”, this should hopefully be helpful. Since giving up flying for holidays this is one of the most common things I get asked about so I thought I’d make a video explaining everything I know about carbon offsetting.

I attempt to answer questions like “if I offset my flight it cancels out any harm done right?” and “don’t offsetting projects help tackle climate change?” as well explaining what carbon offsetting actually means. Then I share 6 reasons why I don’t think carbon offsetting is a very helpful way to tackle the harmful emissions from flying and also suggest what we can do instead.

If you’re interested in learning more about sustainable travel and seeing what a flight-free holiday looks like I will be uploading more videos in the future which explore both.

For now though I hope you enjoy this video and see you soon!

The Sustainable Travel Agenda where countries stand today

Eco-friendly traveling (Nordic Adventure) | The Travel Book

To take local action against climate change The Travel Book has decided to become an eco-friendly travel blog. Our sustainable journey began with our Nordic Adventure in March 2019. On this adventure, we traveled from Denmark to its neighbor countries Sweden and Norway. We did it to inspire our followers to travel more eco-friendly to closeby and local destinations in the North without airplane transportation
