Before I started making this video I wanted to know how travel vlogs describe the city and what my city is most popular for. Every traveler calls Skopje the “city of statues” because there are statues all over the city, especially in the central area but, no native is referring to the city like this. Most of them were built during the “Skopje 2014” project with the goal of restoring the glare that the city lost in a devastating earthquake that destroyed 80% of the city on the 26th of July, 1963. The place that seats as a reminder of this horrible event is the OLD RAILWAY STATION. The clock shows the exact time of the earthquake (05:17am).
SKOPJE has been inhabited since at least 4000 B.C. and survived at least three devastating earthquakes (518, 1555 & 1963 A.C.), at least one devastating fire (1689 A.C.), and many... many wars.
Like the rest of the country is most famous for its food and rich history. You will find out more about that on this tour. You’ll also see the places that are worthwhile visiting and where to go if you wanna eat or buy something.
Basically, you'll get a feel of the city and a history lesson.

Debar Maalo is 12 min. walk away from Square Macedonia”. It's the heart of the modern culture of Skopje. Filled with bars and restaurants, it's the posh part of the city and one of the most expensive residential areas, together with Vodno”.
The “City Park is 12 min. walk away from Square Macedonia” and spreads across 4361hectares of land. It's home to a lot of sport-clubs and perfect for fine walks, fine dining, and leisure.
If you cross “Stone Bridge” (one of the oldest structures in the city), going from Square Macedonia you will arrive at the OLD TOWN.
The “Old Bazaar”, as part of the OLD TOWN, is one of the oldest and largest markets in the Balkans at least since the 12th century. Here you can find a wide variety of traditional craftwork, fashion, furniture shops, and a lot of jewelry and restaurants. You can really see the Turkish (Ottoman) heritage around.
“Kale Fortress” was built in the 6th century A.C., most probably by the Roman Emperor Justinian 1st. Since then it was destroyed and reconstructed multiple times.

Skopje City Mall is 10 min. & East Gate Mall is 3 min. drive away from the center. There are 3 smaller shopping centers: Ramstore Mall, Vero Jambo, and GTC; all, within walking distance from Square Macedonia.
Canyon Matka is 30 min. drive away from the center of the city and it's the most popular recreational spot for the people of Skopje. Here, you can go hiking, kayaking, fine dining, take a boat trip across Treska lake/river (±3,5 EUR) or see Vrelo Cave - one of the deepest flooded pit caves in the world, home to 200 endemic plants. At the canyon, you can see vultures, bald eagles protected by extinction law, and species of butterflies that can be found only here. Also, it's a hot spot for world championships in kayaking.
Vodno Mountain is 3 min. drive away from the center. Multiple spots along the main road are convenient for the start of your hiking journey. You can travel by car until Middle Vodno where you can have a picnic under the shades or take a cable car to the top.

Skopje, North Macedonia | A day trip to Matka Canyon and Free City Walking Tour
Skopje has to be one of the most unique and unusual cities we have ever visited!
On our first day in Skopje we took advantage of the FREE city walking tour. We think taking a walking tour is essential when first arriving in a new city. There is always so much to learn and you are immediately connected with a local who can usually give you some good advice for enjoying your trip. Here is the link to the free city walking tour we did, if you're interested.
While we enjoyed learning about the rich history of Macedonia, we were a tad more excited to head out of the city and back into nature! If you're in Skopje, you cannot miss a trip to Matka Canyon. This peaceful paradise is only a short 30 minutes bus ride outside of the city. The canyon offers many activities such as hiking trails, kayaking, and a boat ride to Europe's deepest underwater cave, Vrelo Cave. After a quick brunch at one of the restaurants on site, we opted for the serene boat ride and a tour of the cave for just $8 a person. This was definitely a highlight of our time in Macedonia!

Skopje is such an interesting city to explore! We didn't expect the most polarising place we've ever visited to be in Macedonia / North Macedonia - but we're glad to be here and taking a free walking tour to get more of an understanding of this country.
Taking a tour of Skopje was vital - there's so much information to consume, so much history, so many oddly placed statues and layouts that it was definitely the best way to visit and understand how Skopje has become the city it is today to travel. It all just feels a bit random, a bit prepared and incredibly polarising, for all the reasons we mention in the video... but theres definitely some charm that goes with all that and made for an interesting day.
In our last travel video we arrived in North Macedonia and had plenty of conflicting comments from people, not about Skopje itself, but about the name of North Macedonia vs Macedonia. We always research so were well aware of the situation before arriving but the reality is we can't please everyone. Macedonians don't want to be called North Macedonia, yet that's officially what's been agreed upon and there are a few countries (one in particular) that passionately will not accept the name as Macedonia only. Tricky situation that we can't win either way regardless of what we say - we highly recommend you give it a Google and learn more if you're interested.

Con mi esposa Dace seguimos recorriendo este lado del mapa y llegamos a Macedonia del Norte, un pequeño país balcánico del que poco se conoce. Vamos a recorrer sus calles intentando percibir su forma de vida para compartirla con ustedes.
Estamos en Skopje, una ciudad vibrante y cosmopolita que ofrece algo para todos. Si estás buscando un destino turístico diferente y culturalmente rico y desconocido, Skopje es una excelente opción.

Lo más importante que debes saber sobre Skopje, la capital de Macedonia del Norte, es que es una ciudad que ha sido habitada desde la antigüedad y ha sido gobernada por diferentes imperios a lo largo de los siglos, lo que se refleja en su arquitectura y cultura.
Las bamboleares anatomías pululan a nuestro alrededor. Entre monumentos estáticos y edificios atractivos, Skopje es una verdadera fiesta para los ojos.
Skopje se encuentra en el centro de los Balcanes, en la orilla del río Vardar. Esta ciudad cosmopolita con una población de aproximadamente 700.000 habitantes tiene un aire particular y muchas cosas por descubrir. Vamos a mencionar algunos de los lugares más importantes que debes visitar en Skopje.
El Viejo Bazar es el centro histórico de Skopje. Es un laberinto de calles estrechas y tiendas que venden todo tipo de productos, desde souvenirs hasta especias.

La Plaza Macedonia es la plaza principal de Skopje. Está rodeada de edificios neoclásicos y modernos. Para nuestro gusto el resultado es demasiado escenográfico, como si se tratara de fachadas construidas a tal fin.
Otros lugares interesantes que puedes visitar en Skopje son El Museo Nacional de Macedonia alberga una colección de arte y artefactos que documentan la historia y la cultura de Macedonia. Por su parte el Teatro Nacional de Macedonia es uno de los teatros más importantes de los Balcanes. Ofrece una programación variada de obras de teatro, óperas y ballets.
La mejor época para visitar Skopje es durante la primavera o el otoño, cuando el clima es más suave. Aunque no lo esperaras, aquí suele hacer mucho calor en verano.
El idioma oficial de Macedonia es el macedonio, pero también se habla inglés y otros idiomas europeos. En mayor medida que en otras ciudades de los Balcanes, aquí encontraras una ciudad abierta al turismo y mejor preparada, lo que facilitará tu estadía.
En cuanto a la economía, la moneda de Macedonia es el denar macedonio. Hemos encontrado los precios algo más altos que en nuestra anterior visita en 2017, sin embargo, Macedonia del Norte sigue siendo un país asequible para el turismo en el que puedes comer por menos de 10 euros y alojarte, en base doble, por unos 20 euros por persona.
En cuanto a la cocina macedonia, esta es una mezcla de influencias turcas, griegas y balcánicas. Los productos lácteos, el vino y el café son elementos destacados de la cocina del país, y los platos tradicionales incluyen estofados y sopas.
Respecto al Transporte público, los autobuses en Skopje son en su mayoría de dos pisos rojos como un tributo a Londres, que le dio a la ciudad varios autobuses después de un devastador terremoto en 1963. Tienes que comprar un pase de autobús en los quioscos y acreditarlo porque no es posible comprar un billete a bordo.
