If you're one of the rare souls who decides to take a trip to Guyana, the least visited country in the Americas, chances are your first stop will be Georgetown, the capital city. With a population of only around 200,000, it looks and feels almost like a small town. But this city is no joke. With the newfound oil wealth driving prices up, crime is starting to skyrocket. Although everyone in Guyana suffers from theft, American oil workers and Chinese merchants in particular are hunted in the streets by muggers. I was no oil worker, but I was assumed to be one.

Wow, People in Guyana Are Fun! (#104)
For a very long time, I had looked at the map of South America and wondered about those 3 tiny countries at the top -- the countries that no one knew even existed. One of those countries, Guyana, actually had a huge immigrant population in New York, where I'm from. It was the only English speaking country in South America, they said. It was a country of unspoiled natural beauty, they also said. With the world slowly reopening again, I knew I had to go. Guyana is not rich, but with it's recent discovery of oil, that will be changing very soon. But I was there for the people.

French Guiana, Suriname, and Guyana Overland
I flew into Cayenne French Guiana and traveled overland to Suriname and Guyana. Suriname was the most well organized in terms of being able to easily visit interesting sites, but all three countries were in interesting in their own way!

Who is Dutch? What is it like growing up as a Surinamese (South Asian) in the Netherlands?
Did you know there are over 350,000 people of Surinamese descent in the Netherlands? Suriname used to be a Dutch colony. Modern-day Suriname is one of the most ethnically diverse countries in the Americas made up of Africans, Indians, Indonesians, and more.
When Suriname gained independence in 1975, many Surinamese migrated to the Netherlands...and Dutch culture today is a melting pot of these migrants' cultures, traditions, and stories.

Paramaribo: The Coolest City You've Never Heard Of ???????? (#108)
If you look at a map of South America very carefully, you'll notice a little country called Suriname in the top right corner. They don't speak Spanish there. They surprisingly speak Dutch, along with a ton of other languages. Gone are the Latin influences, instead you find touches of Indonesia, India, China, Holland and West Africa. It's a fascinating place, and I was going to start with the capital, Paramaribo, to get a better understanding of it.
Thankfully, there was plenty of food and Parbo beer waiting for me. But first, I had to learn Dutch - a sentence I never thought would escape my mouth.

The Caribbean is one of the most ethnically diverse regions in the western hemisphere with a broad geographic and cultural scope, and the ethnicities across the region vary widely too. On a wide scale, a sense of pan-Caribbean identity unites all of the Caribbean people, though individual backgrounds and ethnic origins differ widely.
In today’s presentation, we are going to look at the various ethnic identities in the Caribbean. But first, a disclaimer. The Caribbean has been home to immigrants from around the world for more than 500 years, bringing dozens of ethnic groups into contact. So ethnic identity in the Caribbean is rarely a simple matter, it becomes a complex tapestry interwoven with each other.
That being said, let's go through the main contributors to ethnic identities in the Caribbean, and break down the various ethnic groups and origins of the Caribbean people.
