THINGS TO DO IN MONTREAL IN WINTER

If you’ve never been to Montreal before you’re in for an absolute treat. It is this beautiful blend of French flair and cool Canadian vibes, and it is such a friendly and welcoming city too.

After spending 3 days in Montreal it is quickly becoming one of my favourite cities in all of Canada. It just has so much going for it - amazing architecture, incredible food, very different and distinct neighbourhoods. It’s just one of those places where you immediately feel comfortable walking around in.

As a little taster, check out my video on some of the best things to do in Monteal in winter! Also, here's my Montreal itinerary for you too -

Montreal, Quebec: Downtown Driving Tour (May 16, 2018)

Driving tour video taken on May 16, 2018 through the streets of downtown Montreal, Quebec. The tour starts on Rue Notre Dame before zig-zagging back and forth using Boulevard Rene Levesque and Rue Saint Catherine.

Original plans had the video carrying on but, honestly, traffic became such a disaster after the intersection of Saint Catherine and Bleury that we just plain gave up. Additional footage of Notre Dame and Sherbrooke Street will be published soon.

Montreal is a city in the southwestern portion of the Canadian province of Quebec. The city was founded on May 17, 1642 and incorporated in 1832. The population is 1.7 million with a metro count of 4.1 million.

How to Spend 2 Days in Montreal No Matter the Weather: A Montreal Itinerary

The last time I visited Montreal was a whopping 10 years ago. Sheesh, that’s bad. (and worst when said out loud). I don’t subscribe to the whole Toronto Maple Leafs vs Montreal Canadians hockey rivalry. I can not deny that old town Montreal has tons of history, is a foodie lovers' paradise (this, according to the awesome late Anthony Bourdain) and a haven for jazz music.

After writing some other local (as in Canada) Short Trip Itineraries for St. John’s out East in Newfoundland, Ottawa, and, of course, Toronto (my city) here in Ontario, I couldn’t wait to return to La Belle Province (Quebec) and revisit Montreal.

Montreal In January

A 6 minute video of a fun filled family expedition to Montreal and Quebec City in January during Polar Vortex Part II. The warmest temp during our visit was 7F but it pretty much hovered around -10F. Even the locals were a bit chilled but I found it refreshing! Cathedrals, Ice Hotel, Winter Festival, great mixology bar, sad attempts at speaking French, delicious poutine, we did it all! (Watch with the sound on, the music is meant to complement this piece.)

January - MONTREAL - CANADA - #24

St Patrick Day Montreal 2018 - part 2

Saint Patrick Day 2018. Montreal downtown. 2018-03-18.

Montreal snowstorm - January 13th-14th, 2018

A video compilation highlighting Southern Quebec’s (and the island of Montreal’s) 3rd significant snowfall of the Fall-Winter 2017-2018 period. I define a significant snowfall as any system capable of producing at least 15.0 cm of snow over the duration of that system. If adhering to the definition that stipulates a 15.0+ cm snowfall within 12 hours, then this event would be the 2nd significant snowfall of this Fall-Winter. By the snowfall’s conclusion, 36 cm of snow fell at Trudeau Airport.

This system (a Texas low) first yielded large amounts of rainfall (about 17.0 mm, if including that brief period of light freezing rain during the early-evening) followed by freezing rain and ice pellets, during January 12th. Rainfall footage and extensive snow/ice melting, and even a photograph of an outdoor insect (fly) on the outer portion of my window glass, can be found at the beginning of the video. The ice pellets quickly transitioned to snow by mid-evening January 12th, with much of the snow falling through January 13th. 5.6 cm of ice pellets and snow occurred on January 12th. At times, snowfall rates were as much as 2 cm/hour.

Footage was taken in SW Pierrefonds, located in Montreal’s West Island. Radar imagery is courtesy of Environment Canada.
