A Brief History of Jan Mayen

x

Jan Mayen – a Norwegian island with an active volcano in the Arctic

Jan Mayen is a Norwegian volcanic island situated in the Arctic Ocean, partly covered by glaciers around the Beerenberg volcano. The Beerenberg is the world's northernmost active volcano over sea level. Norway built on Jan Mayen a meteorological observatory and a radio station, and in 1929 annexed the island. The main settlement on the island is Olonkinbyen, located a few kilometres away from the radio and the meteorological station.

Voyage to Beerenberg: Scaling The Volcanic Peak of Jan Mayen

Straum assembled an expedition unit and set off in search of the summit of Beerenberg. This is the story of how it went.

It is thanks to Beerenberg Volcano that the island exists at all. Dominating the northern part of Jan Mayen, the world’s northernmost active stratovolcano bursts straight up from the Arctic Ocean, culminating in its fearsome peak, 2,277m above the sea level. Inspired by this foreboding mountain, Straum’s founders assembled an expedition unit and set off in search of the summit.

The goal of the mission was clear: To study the rarely disturbed nature of the island, its geology, and the volatile weather systems that frequently batter its shores.

Traveling British Isles, Jan Mayen & Spitsbergen from the Highlands to High Arctic

An Arctic voyage that begins much closer to home! With our new expedition cruise trailing north from the British Isles to Jan Mayen and Spitsbergen, Poseidon Expeditions invites you for a tour of rarely visited polar gems.

This viking-style voyage departs from Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland. Who knew the Arctic could become so accessible with our m/v Sea Spirit, a luxury expedition vessel made to accommodate 114 passengers. We then cross the Arctic Circle, stopping at Fair Isle and Shetland Islands on our way to the rarely visited island of Jan Mayen - home to the northernmost active volcano on Earth.

M/v Sea Spirit pushes farther north and continues to Spitsbergen in the renowned High Arctic archipelago of Svalbard. This is Arctic expedition cruising at its finest: unique polar landscapes, from flowering tundra to sweeping mountain tops, and diverse wildlife ruled by the king of the North, the polar bear. We explore the fjords on the west side of the island to witness the highlights of Svalbard. We complete the Arctic experience by enjoying stunning scenery and visiting places rich with polar history.

Huw Lewis-Jones, an expedition leader for Poseidon Expeditions, walks you through our itinerary. More about this cruise:

Svalbard and Jan Mayen Drone Flight: Longyearbyen is a small coal-mining town on Spitsbergen Island, in Norways Svalbard archipelago. This Arctic town is known for its views of the Northern Lights. The modern Svalbard Museum chronicles the regions natural and cultural history. It includes a stuffed polar bear. Live bears can occasionally be seen in the area. The North Pole Expeditions Museum recounts early efforts to reach the pole by air. Longyearbyen is on Adventfjorden Bay, which can be crossed by boat to reach Hiorthfjellet Mountains trails. Nearby, the Gruve 3 coal mine depicts Svalbards mining history. The underground Svalbard Global Seed Vault preserves backups of the worlds seeds in the name of food security. Husky-dog sleds and snowmobiles set off from Longyearbyen for trips farther afield to places like Isfjord Radio, a former transmission station with views overlooking the Arctic Ocean. Boat trips with fishing are also possible, reaching destinations like the walrus colony on the island of Prins Karls Forland. [wikipedia // Google]

Sailing on the waves to Jan Mayen

Sailing over blue water in the Greenland Sea close to Jan Mayen with a following northerly force 7 Beaufort.
Our sailing yacht Cachalot, a heavy 36 feet steel ketch with centerboard, gently behaved.
With the mainsail, mizzen and staysail down and the yankee reefed to 50% we logged 8 knots.
Halfway to Iceland the wind went down and the sun came through. Time for a birthday party.

The Greatest High Arctic Town in the World! Longyearbyen (Svalbard) - A Cultural Travel Guide

At over 78 degrees north, Longyearbyen is the last substantial settlement before the North Pole and the main administrative centre of the Svalbard archipelago. Once a tough mining town, it is now a centre for scientific research as well as a prime tourism destination. It provides a home to over 50 nationalities, taking advantage of the visa free rules enshrined in the Svalbard Treaty. Most of the conveniences of a modern Norwegian town are present, but with the significant added pressure of a location in a polar bear environment and the hardship of 84 days of darkness in winter.

In this film I am indebted to the contribution of Katie Herlingshaw and also the kindness of Stuart Thomson in providing added photography.

Boat trips with fishing are also possible, reaching destinations like the walrus colony on the island of Prins Karls Forland.Svalbard and Jan Mayen is a statistical designation defined by ISO 3166-1 of two parts of Norway under separate jurisdictions—Svalbard and Jan Mayen. While the two are combined for the purposes of the International Organization for Standardization category, they are not administratively related. This has further resulted in the country code top-level domain .sj being issued for Svalbard and Jan Mayen, and ISO 3166-2:SJ. The United Nations Statistics Division also uses this code, but has named it Svalbard and Jan Mayen Islands. Svalbard is an archipelago in the Arctic Ocean under the full sovereignty of Norway, but is subject to the special status granted by the Svalbard Treaty. Jan Mayen is a remote island in the Arctic Ocean; it has no permanent population and is administrated by the County Governor of Nordland. Svalbard and Jan Mayen have in common that they are the only integrated parts of Norway not allocated to counties. While a separate ISO code for Svalbard was proposed by the United Nations, it was the Norwegian authorities who took initiative to include Jan Mayen in the code. Its official language is Norwegian. // [Source: wikipedia // Google]
