TRASH ISLAND IN PARADISE

**I WENT BACK TO TRASH ISLAND 1 YEAR LATER, YOU WON'T BELIEVE WHAT CHANGE: **

Trash Island is now 75 metres (250 foot) bigger than when I visited. And STILL growing.

It was one of the strangest places I've ever been to but it is far from a common site on the earth. Many landfills this size and bigger exist all over the planet as an end-point to our waste... But as eluded to in the video these poisonous and toxic places directly affect the environment in detrimental ways. It seems so crude that the answer to unwanted waste is to bundle it all together and dump it in one spot.

In a rudimental way I think that if companies could find financial value in trash and waste then a cleaner environment would happen rapidly. From small schemes such as returning plastic and glass bottles for cash* to companies creating waste solutions that integrate into the culture of society. Of course there are industrial practices including: electro filter, active carbon and potassium filter, quench, HCl-washer, SO2-washer, bottom ash-grating, etc in existence to harvest the waste for valuable materials but this exists in an industrial capacity and at the very endpoint. Surely there's something that can be done before it gets this far?

*Aware this scheme occurs in other countries but not in UK

Nuclear physicist Deng Jiaxian was the first to be ordered to the experimental base. Leaving behind a family photograph at his home, he simply vanished. That year, he was just 34. On the night he said goodbye to his wife, he told her: I’m dedicating myself to a job I have to do. This will be the event that will give my life meaning.

It was August 1958, when Deng Jiaxian arrived at the experimental base in the Gobi Desert. He’d set out from home, without leaving a mailing address. His wife spent the following years not knowing where he was or what he was doing.

In a secret room, using just slide rules, Deng and his team ran repeated calculations on the key data for the atomic bomb detonation. In this way, they worked out the theoretical design.

However, Deng suffered an accident that would cause severe damage to his health. During an experiment, he neglected to wear protective gear. Several years later, his condition became terminal.

In June 1986, the hospital where Deng was being cared for, reported that he was on the point of dying. Out of respect, the Central Military Commission declassified the reports on his work. The country’s major newspapers carried his story on their front pages, under headlines that described him as the “Father of China’s A- and H-bombs”. This was how his silent contribution lasting 28 years was honoured.

The Most Toxic Tourist Attraction in the World/Walking on Nuclear Waste - Weldon Spring, MO

After nearly two years of construction, the new Weldon Spring Interpretive Center near Weldon Spring, Missouri re-opened in Spring 2022. In one of the earliest Adventures in TV-Land, we visited this site in the Before Times (before the pandemic). We made a return visit here recently to check out the new Interpretive Center and once again go for a short walk up the highest point in St. Charles County, Missouri, a small man-made hill that contains almost a decade of toxic and nuclear waste.

Fukushima overwhelmed with radioactive water

Highly radioactive water overflowed barriers into Japan's Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power station after its operator Tepco underestimated how much rain would fall and failed to pump it out quickly enough.

Tepco has been battling to contain radioactive water at the nuclear complex, which suffered meltdowns and hydrogen explosions following a devastating earthquake and tsunami in March 2011.

Treasure Island News Piece by Molly O'Brien

China seriously concerned about Japan's disposal of Fukushima water

China on Tuesday expressed grave concern about Japan's decision to discharge nuclear wastewater from Fukushima nuclear plant into the sea.
A Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson said in a statement that the Fukushima nuclear accident is one of the most serious in world history. The leak of large amounts of radioactive materials has had far-reaching implications on the marine environment, food safety and human health.
A review report by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) expert team points out that if the wastewater containing tritium from the Fukushima nuclear plant is discharged into the sea, it will affect the marine environment and people's health of neighboring countries and that the treated wastewater needs to be further purified to remove other radionuclides.
The spokesperson said that despite doubts and opposition from home and abroad, Japan has unilaterally decided to release the Fukushima nuclear wastewater into the sea before exhausting all safe ways of disposal and without fully consulting with neighboring countries and the international community.
This is highly irresponsible and will severely affect human health and the immediate interests of people in neighboring countries, said the spokesperson.
Noting that oceans are mankind's shared property, the spokesperson said how the wastewater from the Fukushima nuclear power plant is handled is not merely a domestic issue for Japan.
The spokesperson said China strongly urges the Japanese side to face up to its responsibility, follow the science, fulfill its international obligations and duly respond to the serious concerns of the international community, neighboring countries and its own people.
The spokesperson called on the Japanese side to reevaluate the issue and refrain from wantonly discharging the wastewater before reaching consensus with all stakeholders and the IAEA through full consultations.
China will continue to watch closely the developments of the matter together with the international community and reserves the right to make further reactions, the spokesperson said.

Japanese WWII Pillbox on Tumon Beach, Guam

The narrative says it all. I have no idea why these just sit on the beach buried by the sand. One person explained that the tourist board didn't want to bum out the Japanese tourists. I find that to be an ignorant excuse, since the Japanese tour buses stop at a lot of war sites.
