7 Unexpected Things In Costa Rica

This video is about things we didn’t know about or expect when we planned our trip to Costa Rica. There are always surprises when you go to new countries so we’d like to share unexpected things with you!

Our unexpected things included:
It was more expensive than we expected., Costa Rica is still considered a third-world country, which means that the poor far outnumber the middle class so we expected things like accommodations and car rentals to be much cheaper. However, be prepared to pay North American prices for these things. There are budget options for accommodations like hostels and cheaper hotels but if you’re not looking to travel on a budget, it isn’t that cheap. Eating out at local sodas (local restaurants) is inexpensive costing only $4-$7 a meal and the food is so delicious!

It takes a lot longer to get places than we expected. The distances are quite short as Costa Rica is a small country but roads are usually windy, slower and some are unpaved and single lane. It took us often twice the time we expected to get anywhere. We also got lost using the wrong App so when you’re there make sure you use WAZE.

Parking Security - something you will pay for when visiting popular beaches and national parks. A lot attendants will charge you to watch over your car while you are away. Always have some cash on hand for this and the cost is only a couple hundred colones.

If you are looking for decaf Coffee, you will have a hard time. Costa Rica proudly grows their own coffee beans and it is a major export. I think decaf is thought as inferior coffee so they don’t have much of it around.

Scorpions glow at night. This was such a fun find for us! They glow blue-green under a black light from a coating in their exoskeleton. Plus scorpions in Costa Rica are NOT deadly.

Night walks are a fun activity to do as you learn a lot about the animals in Costa Rica. The rainforest really comes alive at night too!

Airport Departure Tax is not usually covered on your airline ticket and you will have to pay it at a special counter at the airport before checking in for your flight. Beware of scammers trying to charge you and double-check your ticket just to make sure it isn’t already included. The cost was $29 US per person.

We hope these insights into our unexpected things will help you in your trip planning to this truly amazing country!

Why do so many people leave Costa Rica?

Richard is the owner/broker of Coldwell Banker Tamarindo, and the founder of the vacation rental company Please get in touch if we can help.

Summary
A proportion of the expats who set up a new life and buy real estate in Costa Rica leave after a few years. Why is that? Here are a few reasons why.

The ‘Never contenters’
You can often spot these ones early on. Either they are lamenting the good old days before all the gringos spoiled it for everyone, or alternatively they are sure that their lives will be infinitely happier once that road is repaved, or when the whatever is fixed, or the new cinema is finished. Or if they could just get those waitresses to walk a bit faster. ‘The Tamarindo shuffle’ My personal outlook is that I am content with what we have. In the mid 1990s I liked it, and now I like it too.

The plan was only ever a 3 or 5 year, or just a vacation home

I would say this is the biggest category. A lot of expats are not taking a forever decision and their return home is part of the plan. Nothing wrong with this at all, actually it makes the moving to Costa Rica decision easier if you can think that it is just for a certain period while you decide. Many choose to stay longer.

Didn’t do the research, didn’t take the time
In my video about ‘8 things I wish i knew before I bought’ (link below) I stress the need to take your time, do your research, and spend some time in Costa Rica before you buy. It may be cultural differences with the latin people, cost of living.

Change in circumstances at home
This is a big category too, either because of an elderly relative, or the children’s schooling, or a health issue

Victim of crime, relationship break up
A sudden unexpected event such as being a victim of crime, or having a relationship breakup sometimes causes people to pack up and go home. Crime does happen but fortunately it is rare, (though this depends where in the country you live) and violent crime even more rare

Boredom, lack of stimulation
Busy people who move to Costa Rica suddenly find a lot of time on their hands. This is good because a visit to the bank can take a couple of hours sometimes. But seriously it is important to find like minded people, join groups, take up sports
Not happy here, not happy there.
There is definitely a subsection of residents that is not happy deep down inside, so wherever they are geographically they will never be content. They move looking for something missing, but what is missing is within.

Who are Kara and Nate?!
Watch our documentary here:

Originally from Nashville, Tennessee, we got married 2013 and were super “normal.” I was a teacher and Nate started a small printing business from the spare bedroom of our apartment. We discovered the world of “travel hacking” & became obsessed. So after 2 years of obsessively saving $35k and over 2 million miles and points, we sold our cars and apartment and left home January 10, 2016 for a “one year” trip around the world. Our goal was to see as many places as possible before we ran out of money and went home to “normal life.” We started this travel vlog to share our experiences with friends and family, but quickly fell in love with this lifestyle and did everything we could to keep going. 4 years later, we achieved our new goal of visiting 100 countries and all 7 continents. We had no plans to slow down, until 2020 forced us to ;) Which is when we bought a converted van to start exploring our own country for the first time. Van life was a major adjustment and so different than flying every week like we were used to, but we are incredibly thankful to be able to continue doing something we love every day. ????????????

Costa Rica Travel Tips 2019 ✈️

Vacation Rentals for ALL... Solo Travelers, Family Travel, Group Travel, Honeymoon, Bachelor Parties, Company Retreats...

Costa Rica Guy's Trip has put together some great travel tips for you.

✈️Airports:
There are 2 International Airports in Costa Rica

•Juan Santamaria aka San Jose (SJO)
--LINK--

•Daniel Oduber Quiros Airport aka Liberia (LIR)
--LINK--

Tip: Please make sure you book the right San Jose airport; I have had 2 people book for San Jose California before.

Booking Air Travel:
In my past life I traveled a lot so I might be able to give some good advice here. Looking for the best deals can be tiresome and daunting, and we all want the best deals.

Most major US carriers fly here and several direct from Atlanta, Ft Lauderdale, LA, PHX, Dallas, Houston, Miami and I do believe Jet Blue and South West making direct flights from the NE

What I do suggest is to visit several apps pick a place you want to go to and set up for that apps “alerts” ????

???? Transportation to and from airports...

Make sure you choose a driver speaks English is Licensed, Certified and most of all Insured.

ALL of our drivers meet these criteria. Cars, SUVs, Mini Vans, Buses

☎️ US Cell & Text: 480.525.2660
☎️ CR Cell & Whatsapp: +506.525.2660

???? Do I need to Rent a Car?

If you choose to do this make sure that you have the Basic Insurance!!!

•Tip: Depending on how many people are traveling in your group and where you are staying, simply get a driver for airport transport.
While in Jaco, you can walk to most places or short taxi ride if needed.

Uber:
Yes, Costa Rica has Uber and now even Uber eats!!! I use Uber as much as I can; Less $$, you know the exact cost and You Get Points on Your Credit Card = Bonus

???? Where to Stay???
This really depends on how many people you are traveling with, ages of travelers, what activities the group may want to do. Don’t worry we’ve got you covered with over 250 properties to choose from and a lot less expensive than you would think

•Tip: In most cases a two-bedroom self-contained condo is about the same price as a nice hotel room.

Below to submit your Ideal Accommodation
--LINK--

????????‍♂️ Activities ????
There is so much to do…

•ATV, Manuel Antonio National Park, Surf, Zip Line, Sport Fishing, Bird Watching, Crocodile Tour, Booze Cruise or simply relax at the beach or pool with umbrella drinks

•Tip: Contact me for ideas on what to do and Discounts!!!

???? Food ????
Costa Rica has been really catching on in the global gastronomy craze. You can get something from most parts of the world here; Chinese, Indian, Burgers, Wings, Sushi…but my biggest suggestion is always going to be fish!

???? Happy Hours ????
Happy Hours are not always for drinks… ask around to see who has happy hour specials with food as well. It is not a custom like it is in north America to promote in neon lights Happy Hours so simply ask before you sit down.

❗️ HUGE Tip: CHECK BELOW for The Swell Magazine on What’s Happening / Events / Happy Hours

For Jaco and Hermosa Areas
--LINK--

For Tamarindo and Playa Flamingo Areas
--LINK--

???? Currency Exchange ????

Ok now this is important!!!
Please try to get as little money as possible out of the airport Currency Exchange as possible; it is VERY expensive.
Best to just get $20 out and use until you get to a Costa Rica Bank and make sure to take your passport with you

Guides / Tours / Adventures
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Checkout Everyday Adventures, Andy's tour company. Andy was the guide that took us to climb Treebeard. He also has a couple of cabins that he rents.

Checkout Cabo Matapalo Surf School, Eddie's surf school. Eddie was there to help us with anything that we needed. He also was our surfing instructor, led our night hike adventure as well as took us out for our sunset kayaking trip.

Place To Stay
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Probably one of the most amazing places to stay in Matapalo, Costa Rica on the Osa Peninsula is Osa Marmaris.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Place To Eat
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Martina's is a great place to grab some dinner after 5 or 6 and it is within walking distance of Osa Marmaris. It is also the local hangout on Friday nights where the locals come to sell items such as jewelry and even home made frozen ice cream.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
How To Get There
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
There are multiple ways of getting to Matapalo, Costa Rica - but the quickest is by plane. We flew SANSA Airlines, Costa Rica to Puerto Jiménez and then rented a car. SANSA Airlines is just a short was away from the Juan Santamaría Airport in San José (SJO), Costa Rica.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Auto Rental
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you are looking to drive around the Osa, our suggestion would be to checkout Alamo Car rentals. Their office is just a short walk up the road from the Puerto Jiménez Airport. Make sure to get a vehicle with 4-wheel drive, you will need it.
