Namibia Travel Tips - Sustainable Tourism

The word of the day – is Sustainability. Responsible tourism.

Ecotourism is all about making simple choices in order to lessen your negative impact when you travel around Namibia.

Now it’s important to understand that there are three pillars of sustainable tourism. The first is employing environmentally friendly practices. In other words, it’s up to us to reduce, reuse, recycle.

The second pillar is protecting cultural and natural heritage sites, and saving endangered species.

And finally, providing tangible social and economic benefits for local communities.

How can you start?

We cannot control the carbon emissions of the planes we fly in, the chemicals used by the hotels in which we stay, or the plastics used in the souvenirs sold in the curio shops we visit. But we can choose more eco-friendly transportation, hotels, tour operators, and shopping tactics. To lessen the damage to the environment and create more benefits for local communities.

Where to start? - say no to plastic. You want memories of your holiday to last for years but 500 years is way too long. *Plastic bags can take up to 500 years to breakdown.

So instead, take a re-useable shopping bag with you when you go to local markets. Not only will this cut back on plastic waste, it will also reduce your carbon footprint.

Another great tip is to treat your lodge as you would your own home. Replacing towels daily isn’t necessary, don't take long showers and something we tend to forget is to turn off the television, lights and aircon when you leave the room.

And finally, when travelling the country, support the real local economy. Locally made crafts and souvenirs are not always cheaper, but purchasing them ensures your contribution to the economy will have a more direct and positive impact.

Remember, it’s up to us to reduce, reuse and recycle.
So make sure to keep an eye out on our YouTube channel where will share more ways of how you can become a Sustainable traveler.
