Solo in Guatemala's Most Violent Cartel Hood! (Zone-18)????????

Guatemala City is divided into different zones. The biggest and most violent is Zone 18. It is fully controlled by gang members (Mara 18) and every local I asked warned me not to visit this place at all. Not even its small central market.
I fully respect their advice which is for my own good, but I am very curious to see with my own eyes what this Hood Cartel looks like and most importantly what the locals there have to say about the most dangerous place in Guatemala City.

Let's see.....

Guatemala

A compilation of pictures, video clips and facts from my time volunteering in Guatemala with Global Vision International.

Discovering Antigua: Guatemala's UNESCO-Listed Colonial City | Travel Vlog & Recommendations

Founded in the 16th century and once the capital of Guatemala, Antigua is full of so much history - we loved wandering down the cobblestone streets lined with colourful facades and discovering hidden courtyards and rooftops, lively markets, preserved ruins and old churches, all with the dramatic backdrop of three active volcanoes - Agua, Fuego and Acatenango. Antigua, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a beautiful colonial town that really reminded us of Cartagena, where we first met (!), and also Cusco.

The most spectacular and iconic site is the Santa Catarina arch, which was built in the 17th century to allow the Dominican nuns to cross from their covenant to the school where they taught, without being seen by the public.

Guatemala's capital city was relocated from Antigua to its current location, about 1.5 hour drive away, after it was devastated by earthquakes in 1773. But today Antigua is still the travel hub and most popular destination in Guatemala.

Our Antigua recommendations ????

????????Where to stay? There are SO many hostels to choose from in Antigua as it is truly a travel hub. We would recommend Casi Casa, Ojalá and Maya Papaya - all of the hostels are beautiful colonial properties with a relaxed and friendly vibe.

????????What to do? As well as all of the tours you can do from Antigua (including the Volcan Acatenango hike), it is so fun to explore this old city, walking the cobblestone streets with colourful facades, checking out the ruins and old churches, and discovering secret courtyards and rooftops. Don’t forget to go see the markets too!

????????Where to eat? Check out El Local Cantina for brunch, Kombu Ramen Shop for amazing ramen, La Casa de la Empanada for Argentinian empanadas, and 7A Norte for some good (by Latin American standards…) pizza.

????????Where to drink? The best coffee we had was at Fat Cat Coffee House. The Antigua Brewing Co is an amazing craft cervezeria with the best rooftop in the city. Another great craft brewery is Antugya Cervez El Bosque, which is hidden away in a park with . They also have a small bar by the Arco de Santa Catalina. El Depósito is also a cool bar.
