South Africa is a land of contrasts. From the beaches of the Indian Ocean to the peaks of the Drakensberg Mountains, this country has something for everyone. While many people know about destinations like Cape Town and Johannesburg, there are also some fantastic hidden gems you should visit on your trip to South Africa. But seriously, these tourist destinations in South Africa are a must for you. Today, we will share 7 hidden gems and why you should add them to your South Africa itinerary.
1. WOLFBERG ARCH - Imagine hiking past incredible rock formations, stargazing with zero light pollution, and beer tasting before heading back home. The Wolfberg Arch Hike in the Cederberg is the perfect challenge for Adventurous Hikers.
2. MAC MAC FALLS - The Mac Mac Falls is situated between Graskop and Sabie. The 65 m high Mac Mac Falls in the Mac Mac River is a declared National Monument. This Mac Mac Falls was originally a single stream, but gold miners blasted it with dynamite to divert the river in an attempt to work the rich gold-bearing reef over which it plunges.
3. BLYDE RIVER CANYON - Another hidden gem in South Africa is the Blyde River Canyon. This canyon is located in Mpumalanga and is one of the largest canyons in the world. The canyon has a variety of hiking trails that offer incredible views of the surrounding landscape. The Blyde River Canyon is a must-visit destination if you’re an adventurous traveler. The best part about this hidden gem is that it’s only a short drive from Johannesburg.
4. KARKLOOF FALLS - The Karkloof River rises in the range and drops down through thickly wooded forests creating many small waterfalls. The beautiful and dramatic Karkloof Falls, 105 metres high plunge over the cliff at Shafton Grange, known by the early settlers as “the most beautiful waterfall in the land”.
5. RIEMVASMAAK - The Riemvasmaak hot springs are located in Riemvasmaak, Northern Cape, South Africa. The hot springs are one of the must-visit hot springs in South Africa. The setting is peaceful and secluded, with panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. Below is all you need to know as you plan your visit to this Northern Cape attraction.
6. CATHEDRAL CAVE - The peaceful sanctuary. Cathedral Cave is found in deep in the golden sandstone mountains of Golden Gate Highlands Park. It is a cavern that was carved over millions of years by water, wind and variations in temperatures.
7. STORMS RIVER BRIDGE - The Storms River Mouth Bridge Trail takes you on a short hike along the coastline from the rest camp to the famous suspension bridge over the mouth of Storms River.
