I Landed My Cessna 150 at St. Barts (#3 Hardest Airport)

I've wanted to land at St. Barts (TFFJ) since I was 9 years old. I've tried it hundreds of times on flight sim. Now it's time for the real thing.

In partnership with Garmin Aviation and AOPA!

World’s Shortest Runway Landing - Caribbean’s Extreme Flight

Join me on a flight to 2 of the most dangerous airports in the Caribbean; Saba and St Barth. Here, you are not afraid to fly, but rather to land!

Starting with some plane spotting action at St Maarten Princess Juliana Int’l Airport. Most beach vacationers gather on Maho Beach and anxiously wait for the plane to fly a few meters above their heads before landing and resisting the jet blast on takeoff.

I flew with SXM Airways pilot Jean-Marc Oliver on the Britten Norman Islander (BN-2A-26) from St Maarten to Saba. Saba Airport has the world’s shortest commercial runway at just 400m. The entire island is mountainous and looks like Jurassic Park. Watch our landing and takeoff at Saba, the plane used the entire runway for takeoff and literally “dropped” after leaving the runway!

Next is St Barth. As beautiful as the runway on the Caribbean island, the landing is extreme! Located between the mountains and the sea, it is only 640 meters long. We encountered some strong crosswinds and turbulence before “diving” into the airport. It was some of my most exciting flight as I had to stop filming to watch out for the landing.

5 of the World's Scariest Airport Landings

Thankfully, most airplane takeoffs and landings are routine--boring, we hope. A few airports, however, turn any flight into a nail-biting thrill ride. From the islands of Saint Maarten and Saba in the Caribbean, to the beach runway of Barra and the traffic hazards of Gibraltar, these are all landings to give even seasoned fliers a turn. Which is the most dangerous, though? Watch and find out... #DISTANTLANDS #TRAVELTIPS #TRAVEL

8 most dangerous airport in the world

We’ve rounded up some of the worst around the globe. We took into consideration the following factors: having short runways, being located at a high altitude,
being in a place with unusual weather conditions, registering a high density of air traffic or being in the middle of mountains or buildings.
Each one of these dangerous airport landings require highly experienced pilots, who must perform arduous landing and take-off maneuvers.
Although there is no single list that lists these dangerous airports, the names of 8 of them are mentioned in this video.

St. Barth Gustav III Airport Landing – AIN

Gustav III Airport on St. Barthélemy offers an approach and landing so challenging, pilots must be specially qualified to perform it. In addition to a steep descent between hills, aircraft must come to a stop on the 2,100-foot runway or end up in the waters of the Caribbean.

Plane Hitting Me in St. Barth

I have taken a lot of photos in St. Barth since I first visited this Caribbean island in 1995, including a lot of plane landings. In January 2014, I was standing next to a traffic circle in a permitted area waiting to get a good image of a plane just as it past over me and the road in front. I saw this Winair plane coming in and got ready to get the shot I waited for several hours that day. This one came in very low and the wheel hit me in the head and knocked me out. In the slow motion you can see me start to fall forward after the hit. I remember the hit, and then I was out.

I fell face first into the ground with the camera in my face, ruining the camera and requiring stitches in two areas. I may have been out for about 20 minutes until the ambulance arrived to take me to the hospital. With very good care, I was stitched up and taken care of in less than two hours and asked to be released.

I then walked from the hospital to my friend's bar called Le Select where I met a few friends and two new ones. It turned out that the two new friends were there visiting my other friends and were on that exact same plane. They felt a hit, but could not believe it actually hit me. Tom & Darla Wright are this couple and they took the video inside the plane that you see here.

Still not believing me, we went to Eddy's restaurant down the street where at the very next table was a gentleman that came up to me - my head was wrapped in bandages. He could not believe that I was the one who got hit because he had a video of it from the ground. He showed all of us a still of the wheel on my head - now my friends believed that I actually got hit.

The video from the ground was taken by Arthur Dimitri DeVassal.

Only in St. Barts could I get hit by a plane and survive and then that same day meet the people that had a video of the entire experience.

I have published a coffee table type photo book of panoramic images of St. Barts called St. Barth XL and have art prints on display at a gallery in St. Barts called Les Artisans. Of course, one is a collage of plane landings.

My nickname there became, Better Ed Than Dead. Maybe just a half inch lower and this video would not have such a happy ending. Only in St. Barth!

Thanks to Matthew Gauthier in Canada for editing the videos.

Dangerous Airport Gustaf III, St. Barth - Antilles

SBH Airport Gustaf III is served by small regional aircrafts. The short airstrip is at the base of a steep slope ending on the beach St. Jean. Overall, the airport of St. Barth can be considered relatively dangerous. The arrival descent needs experienced pilots as it is extremely steep over the hilltop traffic circle.

Shortest runway in the world! HD 1080p, landing and take off, saba airport (Yrausquin Airport)

Saba/Yrausquin airport : 17º38´44N 63º13´14W

The airport's risky reputation arises from the airport's physical position: it is flanked on one side by high hills; and on the runway's other side and both ends, cliffs drop into the sea. Additionally, the runway at the airport is extremely short (400m) this creates the possibility that an airplane could under/overshoot the runway during landing or takeoff and end up in the sea or dashed on the rocky cliffs.
Although the airport is officially marked as closed to traffic (X), regional airline propeller aircraft are able to land there under waivers from The Netherlands Antilles' Civil Aviation Authority. The most common aircraft to land there are the Twin Otter and BN-2 Islander
Irausquin Airport can be seen from some places in Saint Martin.

Jet aircraft are unable to land at the airport, because the runway is too short (approx. 1,300 ft or 396 m). However, smaller airplanes (DHC-6, BN-2 and helicopters) are common sights there. There is a small ramp and terminal on the southwest flank of the runway. The ramp also has a designated helipad. The terminal building houses offices for Winair, immigration and security, a fire department with one fire truck and a tower. The tower is an advisory service only and does not provide air traffic control. Aviation fuel is not available on the island of Saba.

The only airline currently serving Yrausquin Airport is locally owned Winair, which operates daily flights to Sint Maarten and Sint Eustatius aboard a de Havilland Canada DHC-6 Twin Otter. The flight to Saint Maarten takes about twelve minutes.

St Barth Amazing Plane landing and Takeoff footage at Gustaf III Airport

Crazy !! Landings and Take Offs at Saint Barthelemy Airport recorder Tuesday, 13 November 2014. I flew to the island by Winair and was fortunate to have Roger as captain on the plane, the first recordings are from Approach seen from the top of the hill at the roundabout, there are 2 police officers which control the cars, the one will have to duck when a plane comes very low (see slow shots). Then there is footage from the beach end of the airport, and finally, the last recordings from approximately centerpiece airport, the day ends so with a heavy rain.

Most Dangerous Landing in Colombia - Cockpit View [HD 1080p]

✈✈✈ SUSCRÍBETE A MI CANAL????????????????????

Read description
Antonio Nariño Airport (IATA: PSO, ICAO: SKPS) is located in the town of Chachagüí and serves the city of Pasto, which is located 35km away from the airport. The airport only handles domestic flights in addition to military operations and private charters

Elevation AMSL: 5.951 ft

The airport's runway was built on a plateau of 50 meters because of the surrounding terrain. Due to this, many pilots refer to the airport as an aircraft carrier. The runway is also relatively short for the altitude at which the airport is at.

The position of the runway means that it is often rendered useless since, in the presence of crosswinds, it prevents aircraft making a safe take off and landing. Crosswinds are common during the summer, particularly during the month of August.

Since 2007, the runway has been equipped with an Localizer, which permits airport operations during the night and when there is low visibility. However, a suitable place is being sought for to build a new airport due to the big increase in passengers and cargo and also since the current airport is often closed due to poor weather conditions.
