A Salty Passion: Hi! We are Ryan (RumShopRyan) and Crystal (Castaway Crystal), we document, photograph, and film the best the Caribbean has to offer. Whether it’s stunning beaches, relaxing hotels, friendly restaurants, or soggy beach bars…we want to share it and inspire others to explore the islands.

MEET US!

Who Is RumShopRyan:
Howdy! I’m Ryan and I hail from the land-locked, can’t get any further from the ocean, state of Kansas. I moved to laid back southwest Florida in 2001. I didn’t know a single person and didn’t have a job. Risky I know, but the ocean was calling and I had to answer.
I’m a huge fan of Kansas City sports, so you’ll probably see a lot of Jayhawks, Chiefs and Royals attire in my photos. Kansas City is a great town and I’m glad I’m from there, but the coastal life was calling. It’s kind of like Kenny Chesney’s “island boy” song. Check out the lyrics and you’ll see what I mean.

I write because I’m passionate about the Caribbean and the island lifestyle, and it’s my way to share it with you. If it has anything to do with the Caribbean, rum drinks, beach style music, or Caribbean culture, you’ll be able to find it on this site.

When in the Caribbean you’ll find a camera around my neck and note pad in my pocket. This is how I document the experiences in unique and interesting ways and bring it back to you, the Castaways.

Who is Castaway Crystal:
I was raised in Southwest Florida so it’s no surprise that I have a love for beaches, water and nature. As a child, most weekends were spent fishing in the warm gulf waters on the family boat. As an adult, most weekends are spent soaking up the sun on Ft. Myers Beach. Even though I have always loved the coastal life, I don’t think I fully appreciated it until I moved to Nashville, TN. I’m all about experiencing new things, and as a Licensed Massage Therapist I thought it would be amazing to massage some of Nashville’s biggest stars (a girl can dream right?). But I missed the sun and sand too much—and let’s not forget the rum runners! After a year I couldn’t take it anymore, this sun bunny moved back to her coast of somewhere beautiful.

I’ve always been passionate about photography and writing but my passions never really had a purpose until I met Ryan. I couldn’t be happier being Ryan’s first mate and sharing my photos and stories with you. May they inspire you to go after your tropical dreams and wishes. Make a plan…Set a date…Just go!

10 Things NOT to Do in Aruba

Get more Tips here!

Aruba has it all – from the constant trade winds and year-round nice weather to its pristine coastline with its sugary white sand and friendly islanders. But if your goal is to stay safe while having the time of your life, here are 10 things you shouldn’t do while visiting Aruba.

1. Don’t Worry About Paying in USD
You don’t have to worry about exchanging your USD (Visual: Exchange Office). While dining out or making any sort of transaction, you’ll be asked which currency you prefer. And, thankfully, most vendors will gladly accept American dollars.

2. Don’t Be Afraid to Drink the Water
It’s some of the cleanest H2O in the world. Thanks to their desalination process, bottled water isn’t needed, and their tap water meets the highest standards of quality by the World Health Organization..

3. Don’t Skip the Sunscreen
You’ll want to make sure you apply it each and every day while visiting Aruba. Since the island is 12 degrees north of the equator, the UV rays and solar radiation is strong. Even when it’s cloudy outside, play it safe and lather up!

4. Don’t Expect to See Street Signs
Street signs are sometimes nonexistent or hidden. Motorcycles and ATVs don’t follow traffic rules, so be on high alert. Also, in the rural parts of the island, you’ll want to watch out for goats and other animals that tend to cross the roads unexpectedly.

5. Don’t Travel to the San Nicolas District at Night
Many tourists head out to this area to get away from the hustle and bustle of the busy resort areas of Palm Beach. While you’ll find the beach to be idyllic, after nightfall there is an increased risk of crime, including petty theft.

6. Don’t Take a Taxi Without Negotiating
Since they aren’t equipped with meters (Visual: Taximeter), drivers will base the cost on the destination rather than the amount of mileage. To avoid any kind of confusion, ask for the total price upfront.

7. Don’t Forget Insect Repellent
This climate has an increased risk of mosquito-borne illnesses, such as chikungunya and dengue fever, and also Zika virus, so pregnant women should really take caution. To combat the risk of being infected, insect repellent is highly recommended.

8. Don’t Go to Chain Restaurants (Visual: Hard Rock Cafe)

Aruba has some of the tastiest locally caught fish, and you can enjoy a moderately priced meal at some of the island’s most popular restaurants, including the Italian eatery Casa Tua and delicious BBQ at Smokey Joe’s Island Grill.

9. Don’t Book a Jeep Tour

Many travelers suggest you skip out on booking one entirely. Instead, you can rent your own open-air jeep for as little as $80, and it can comfortably seat up to 4 people. You can act as your own tour guide as you explore the pristine island.

10. Don’t Rent a Car Without Learning the Rules of the Road
Right turns are prohibited at red lights, and U-turns are often restricted. Seat belts are always required, of course, and children under the age of 5 must ride in a child safety seat. Aside from that, make sure to have fun and enjoy your stay at this tropical paradise!

First Time to ARUBA? Complete for 2018 (ADVICE YOU MUST KNOW)

Looking for a perfect getaway for yourself or family? Maybe a wedding or group getaway. Look no further than One Happy Island...ARUBA!

My clients fall into 4-unique special interests: Romance, Cuisine, Adventure, and Family!

Romance includes weddings, honeymoons, and renewal of vows. Being one of the sunniest destinations in the Caribbean, 82-degree weather, and outside the hurricane belt, couples are almost guaranteed a perfect day (no matter what the occasion). For my clients who have chosen to be married here, they have found it to be hassle-free. A bride may choose from an independent wedding planner or from a hotel planner to handle everything the big day. Aruba is perfect for the destination wedding, honeymoons, and renewal of vows. If you’d like a listing of requirements or wedding planners, please send me an email and I will be more than happy to share.
Aruba loves the family and are very geared toward the most important members, the kids! Kids love exploring the island, it’s undersea life and making a splash. My clients love how easy, safe, and fun an Aruba vacation is.
Adventure travelers won’t be disappointed in Aruba for there is something for the active and wellness travelers. Travelers can board a catamaran for scenic stops along the coast, opt for the snorkeling and diving; or simple relax with a cocktail and sunset cruise. Those craving more of an adrenaline rush you can try a water jetpack and hover or fly up 30 feet above the water. De Palm Island is a fantastic family adventure for the day. An All-Inclusive private island, visitors can enjoy a lunch buffet, open bard, snack corner, snorkel equipment, banana boat rides, beach volleyball, lounge chair, salsa lesson, and many other fun activities.
For scuba divers, the entire south coast is a coral reef with over 20-dive sites and eleven diver friendly wrecks.
Deep sea fishing, there are about 18 sport-fishing companies offering adrenaline rushing half-day and full-day excursions trolling for some of the most popular game fish in the world.
We’ve already mentioned kite surfing and paddle boarding, but if you’d like more specific information, please let me know in the comment section or by email.
Nature and Wildlife.
There is the Arikok National Park where you can view the dramatic landscapes. A nice day’s hike will surely allow you to take in the breath taking views.
Additionally, there is the Bubali Bird Sanctuary, Butterfly Farm, and California Lighthouse.
Lastly let me leave with a visit to the Donkey sanctuary and Ostrich adventure. An fun place to learn and smile.

Things to Do
Aruba is best known for it’s beautiful, white-powder-sand beaches and plentiful water activities, but Aruba has a wealth of fun activities and attractions beyond the shores. One happy island is full of adventurous land activities, historical and and natural attractions, museums and cultural experiences, as well as exotic local dishes waiting to be discovered.
Water Activities
Aruba’s tourquis waters offer a full array of options for those looking for fun under the blue Caribbean Sea. Ranging from surfing, scuba diving (known as the wreck diving capital of the world), snorkeling, deep-sea fishing, surfing, kite-surfing, paddle-boarding and even parasailing there is a mecca of water sport activities to choose from.
Beaches
West Cost. Fringing Turquoise Caribbean waters, Aruba’s beaches include wide shaded expanses, quiet retreats, and busy sunbathing and water sports meccas. Much of the seven-mile strip along the West Coast is lined with resorts and packed with water sports activities.
Windward Coast. In contrast, the beaches along the Windward Coast are in more secluded and undeveloped areas. There are coves out of limestone, inlets formed by pounding waves, unique natural phenomena and craggy deseret terran. Both coasts afford spectacular Caribbean views. ** All beaches in Aruba are public access; however, unlike the US there are no lifeguards.
• If you have questions about a specific beach, please list your question and I will be sure to give you my insights.

Casinos and Night Life
While most hotels have their own casinsos or special in-house entertainment, there is plenty of nightlight to cater to a variety of interests and local atmospheres full of excitement. Aruba’s nightlight offers a wide range of activities from a quiet dinner on the beach to listening to a local band on one of my piers along Palm Beach. Aruba has something for everyone.
Shopping
Aruba has a variety of shopping districts featuring a wide range of selections such as jewelry, table linens, perfumes, leather goods, designer fashions, locally made handicrafts, Cuban cigars, Dutch Delft, Dutch Cheeses, and many other goods.

Welcome back to Taking on Aruba, Episode 2!

Today, we're navigating our way through Arikok National Park, hosted by ABC Tours Aruba. We'll be exploring the Guadirikiri Cave as well as stopping an old plantation, plantage prins. Then, we make our way over to Dos Playa to take in the views before being hit by some rain.

Our last stop was the holy grail, Natural Pool, also known as Conchi. Since the island is much slower due to Covid-19, we had the whole place to ourselves, what a blessing!
