Amazing Things to Do in Svalbard & Top Svalbard Attractions

Discover with us the most amazing things to do in Svalbard & Top Svalbard attractions. If you are looking for the real arctic adventures close to the North Pole, visit Svalbard which is one largest untouched wilderness areas in the world.
A top starting point for travelers is Longyearbyen which belongs to the world’s northernmost settlements and is a gateway to the nature-based experiences in Svalbard. This cosmopolitan arctic town has many hotels, bars and restaurants where you can enjoy food and drinks surrounded by majestic mountains and nature. Taste grilled Atlantic cod with potato salad and beans, it is delicious.
In order to stay safe, make sure to be accompanied by a professional guide when you go outside from Longyearbyen to explore Svalbard’s arctic wilderness. You can do it driving snowmobile or go dog sledding and admire the white-covered Arctic desert at a pleasant pace powered only by your new four-legged friends. Dogs are very friendly, love extra attention and playing with them is addictive 
On your expedition you can meet one of the world’s largest carnivores - the polar bear which is also known as the King of the Arctic.
Meet also walruses resting on floating blocks of ice. However, they can be very sensitive to people being too close or boats. To observe them safely, remember to travel on organized tours with local guides.
While polar bears and walruses you can observe in Svalbard all year long, it is only from late April to August when you can see here Atlantic puffins which are easily recognizable thanks to their famous colorful bills. Did you know that their life expectancy is 30 years or even more?
Do not miss the Svalbard Global Seed Vault which is the world’s largest storage of duplicates of seed samples from the world’s crop collections. It is not open, but a guide can take you close to the entrance where seeds are stored at a temperature of -18ºC.
Another worth-while attraction is the abandoned Soviet coal mining town Pyramiden. Today a ghost town, in its heyday it used to be a settlement of over 1000 inhabitants. It is well preserved thanks to the cold climate, and it is becoming a popular tourist attraction. There is also a hotel with a restaurant and a souvenir shop.

My family and friends thought I was crazy when I wanted to move up to the Arctic at 78° north.

What’s it like to do an expedition cruise around Svalbard?

Polar bears, glaciers, and oh so many seabirds… Embarking on an expedition cruise to the Arctic islands of Svalbard is like venturing into another world or an earlier version of this one.

As you’ll see in this beautifully shot video, Svalbard (also known as Spitsbergen) is virtually overflowing with well-earned superlatives: Amazing, astonishing, and especially epic are all adjectives that come to mind when trying to describe what makes Svalbard expedition cruises so special.

And since Svalbard is virtually bursting with eye-popping landscapes and exotic wildlife, we asked travel filmmaker Tim Charody to embark on one of our expedition cruises to the archipelago to ask our passengers what they love so much about this incomparable location.

Included in this video are interviews shot on location in Svalbard, giving you a little taste of what you might experience on an expedition cruise there. We also explain what exactly an expedition cruise is, since it differs so radically from standard cruises by emphasizing wildlife and exploration.

Also featured in this video are clips of the many activities you can enjoy in Svalbard, such as shoreline hikes and Zodiac cruises, as well as shots of the local land mammals, marine life, and seabirds. These species include but are not limited to:

• Polar bears
• Humpback whales
• Walruses
• Bearded seals
• Puffins
• Arctic foxes
• Kittiwakes
• Reindeer

Though we cannot guarantee you will see any one species, our expedition guides will always be on the lookout for them. And if safety concerns regarding weather, ice conditions, and polar bear presence force us to alter out itinerary, we will always choose the best possible alternative.

Whatever your personal experience on a Svalbard cruise, our expedition leaders and guides will always do their utmost to get you off the ship and into the action as much as possible. That is what separates an Oceanwide cruise from the rest of the polar pack.

If you want more details about all you can see and do in Svalbard, see our numerous Svalbard blogs:

Svalbard 2021

a short Film about my trip to Svalbard in July 2021.
It was an amazing trip with its of nice nature, wildlife and interesting historic things to see.
unfortunately I didn't see any polar bears, but anyway it was worth it!

Svalbard - Norway by drone

There is a reason why so few living beings live so far north in the Arctic. It is cold, brutal and only the ones with endurance and dignity can survive.
But on the other hand when you see the enormous nature, when cold wind burns your face and you hear the silence of wilderness you realize that this is one of places where heaven meets earth.

LONGYEARBYEN Northernmost Arctic Town | Gjestehuset 102 Hostel Svalbard | ✈️Fly to Tromsø

In this video, I'll show you Nybyen and Longyearbyen – Visit Svalbard has a map of Longyearbyen and plenty of information for any touristy questions you may have!

Even better, you can actually rent a bike for free from Visit Svalbard. All you have to do is to reserve one, either by email or in person.

I stayed at Gjestehuset 102 hostel, which is located in Nybyen. It is about a 20 minute walk from Longyearbyen town center, but only about a 6-minute bike ride. Gjestehuset 102 is a great place to consider if you are on a budget trip to Svalbard.

This guest house is located not too far from the Longyear Glacier, in the Longyear Valley (which the capital of Svalbard is named after: Longyearbyen).

Book this hostel here if you like:

LONGYEARBYEN SVALBARD | Highlights of the Northernmost Town in the World

Have you ever seen the sun in Svalbard? It is unlike anything I've ever seen before - it was hovering just above the hills, moving sideways, before it finally set above those same hills.

There are several things to do in Svalbard. Exploration in Longyearbyen, Svalbard is very interesting.

Start at the Svalbard Church, which is open 24 hours. It is a welcoming and warm place to worship and to congregate. There's a stuffed polar bear inside - one of a few stuffed Svalbard polar bears in many places around Longyearbyen.

Another highlight of Svalbard is the Svalbard Museum. Here, you can learn more about the Svalbard Global Seed Vault, as well more about the history and nature of Svalbard. I learn a few things about whaling in Svalbard (a cruel practice, in my opinion).

The Svalbard Seed Vault is not open to the public; however, they are planning on opening a visitor's center in a few years. It is not officially announced yet!

I managed to check out the famous Svalbard Polar Bear sign, which designates the limit on where you are supposed to be safe from polar bear attacks. Beyond this point, you will have to carry a polar bear rifle for protection!

I'm sure that there are other things to see in Svalbard, so please let us know in the comments below if we missed anything.

Next vlog, we will explore what and where to eat in Svalbard!

Svalbard (also known as Spitsbergen) is an archipelago in the arctic ocean. We visited this amazing place during our Scandinavian backpacking trip in the fall of 2016. We stayed in Longyearbyen, the northernmost city in the world! We hiked Sarkofagen and the longyearbeen glacier.

(TRAILER) What’s it like to do an expedition cruise around Svalbard?

Polar bears, glaciers, whales, icebergs, walruses, seals, and oh so many seabirds… The Arctic archipelago of Svalbard is virtually spilling over with polar superlatives, a surreal polar hotspot bursting with more eye-popping landscapes and exotic wildlife than can be suitably (or safely) described in any one sentence.

But how about a video?

We asked travel filmmaker Tim Charody to venture to Svalbard on our new Polar Class 6 ship, Hondius, and find out what makes our passengers love this indelible Arctic location so much.

We at Oceanwide Expeditions encourage you to join us on one of these fantastic voyages, discovering for yourself how it feels to travel in one of Earth’s last great wildernesses. Until then, enjoy the experience in video form.

Snowmobiling in Svalbard

Video by Jarle Røssland.

Everyone in Svalbard drives snowmobiles – and you should try too!

When our Arctic landscape is covered by snow, the snowmobile is a fabulous way to get around. Svalbard offer a broad range of organised tours where you can go on a longer snowmobile safari through the majestic nature to the east coast and see amazing sights like icebergs, old trappers’ huts, glacier termini and Arctic animal life.

Other snowmobile trips take you to the Russian settlement of Barentsburg or the ghost town of Pyramiden, or perhaps you would prefer a multi-day safari? There are plenty of options, including for those looking for a shorter trip to experience driving a snowmobile. On a short trip outside Longyearbyen, you can visit a beautiful ice cave or drive by snowmobile to a wilderness camp for a sumptuous dinner. Experience the authentic Svalbard while driving in the Arctic wilderness. Snowmobiles allow you to feel the freedom of covering large areas in a short space of time.
