Large Iceberg Breaking near Ilulissat

Iceberg breaking up in the Ilulissat icefjord, close to an archaeological site called Sermermiut.

**A quick note - some of the external links to this video have mixed information. To be more precise, this is a large iceberg breaking up, which had already calved from the icecap. The large ones often collect at the end of the fjord, where it is a bit shallower. The NASA image at the end of the video shows this a bit more clearly**

Ilulissat Icefjord - Large iceberg breaking over

Once in a life time experience...The last day before returning home this huge iceberg cracked right in front us.

We were quite baffled so please disregard the at times stupid commentary ;-)

This video was shot at the same time near the water:

Incredible GLACIER CALVING & TSUNAMI WAVE Caught On Camera! | Glacier Wall Collapse (Greenland)

Huge Icebergs collapsing and breaking from the Ilulissat Glacier are often up to 3,000 feet in height (1,000 meter) and are broken up by the force of the glacier and icebergs further up the fjord. Subscribe for more ►

Greenland is home to the only permanent ice sheet outside Antarctica. The sheet covers 3/4 of Greenland's land mass. The Ilulissat Icefjord drains 6.5% of the Greenland ice sheet and produces around 10% of all Greenland icebergs. Some 35 billion tonnes of icebergs calve off and pass out of the fjord every year (Find out more here: In the last 25 years, the Greenland Ice Sheet is rapidly melting, having lost 3.8 trillion tons of ice between 1992 and 2018, a new study from NASA and the European Space Agency (ESA) finds. The melting ice has added 0.4 inches (11 millimeters) to sea level rise. Its cumulative 3.8 trillion tons of melted ice is equivalent to adding the water from 120 million Olympic-size swimming pools to the ocean every year (Find out more here:

Ice calving, also known as glacier calving or iceberg calving, is the breaking of ice chunks from the edge of a glacier. It is the sudden release and breaking away of a mass of ice from a glacier, iceberg, ice front, ice shelf, or crevasse. The ice that breaks away can be classified as an iceberg, but may also be a growler, bergy bit, or a crevasse wall breakaway. The entry of the ice into the water causes large, and often hazardous waves. The waves formed in locations like Johns Hopkins Glacier can be so large that boats cannot approach closer than 3 kilometres. These events have become major tourist attractions. Many glaciers terminate at oceans or freshwater lakes which results naturally with the calving of large numbers of icebergs. Calving of Greenland's glaciers produce 12,000 to 15,000 icebergs each year alone (Find out more here:

About this video: Incredible glacier calving & tsunami wave caught on camera (Bo B.)
This video is showing huge icebergs flipping over and subsequently a series of multiple iceberg and glacier wall collapses. Due to the enormous amount of ice falling into the water, the glacier calving event even triggered a series of mini-tsunami waves up to 16 feet in height (5 m) breaking on the shore.

Enormous Glacier Calvings montage

A three minute montage of some large glacier calvings I've managed to film over the past few years whilst on various assignments in the high arctic. All of these glaciers are in Svalbard and Alaska.

Calving is absolutely a natural glacial occurrence, what is unnatural now is that rate at which it is happening and this is well documented. Our glaciers are melting at an unprecedented rate. Recently I returned to a location in Svalbard where I had not been for five years. The glacier had retreated so many miles that the glacier was now three smaller glaciers and entire bay was unrecognisable compared to my previous visit.

Ice calving, also known as glacier calving or iceberg calving, is the breaking of ice chunks from the edge of a glacier. It is a form of ice ablation or ice disruption and is normally caused by the glacier expanding. It is the sudden release and breaking away of a mass of ice from a glacier, iceberg, ice front, ice shelf, or crevasse. The ice that breaks away can be classified as an iceberg, but may also be a growler, bergy bit, or a crevasse wall breakaway. Calving of glaciers is often accompanied by a loud cracking or booming sound before blocks of ice up to 60 metres (200 ft) high break loose and crash into the water. The entry of the ice into the water causes large, and often hazardous waves. The waves formed in locations like Johns Hopkins Glacier can be so large that boats cannot approach closer than 3 kilometres (1.9 mi). These events have become major tourist attractions in locations such as Alaska. Many glaciers terminate at oceans or freshwater lakes which results naturally with the calving of large numbers of icebergs. Calving of Greenland's glaciers produce 12,000 to 15,000 icebergs each year alone. Calving of ice shelves is usually preceded by a rift. These events are not often observed.

We almost DIED in Spencer Glacier calving - Alaska 2019

My buddy Josh (@steeringsouth) and I rode the Alaska Railroad out to Spencer Glacier Whistle Stop and tent camped over night at Spencer Glacier. We went kayaking in the glacier bay in our Intex K2 Explorer kayaks and witnessed a MASSIVE event as a chunk of a glacier calved about 50 foot from us and created a 10-12 foot wave. We were pelted with chunks of flying ice and buckets of water. To say we are lucky to be alive is an understatement. It was an absolutely stunning phenomenon to witness (and survive) . We learned our lesson and will give glaciers the space they deserve next time we are out exploring. Footage captured using GoPro Hero 7 Black.

Spectacular sight in Antarctica - A Flipping Iceberg

This was the top highlight of my trip to Antarctica. Seconds before the clip, completely out of the blue without any warning, a large portion of the iceberg collapsed into the water. This changed the centre of gravity of the main iceberg, which then rotated and flipped upside down in spectacular fashion. According to our captain he has only seen an iceberg flip twice in his 30+ years of sailing in the Southern Ocean and the Antarctic Peninsula.

Iceberg flips over, RARE!

Tourists have captured rare footage of the moment a small iceberg from the Upsala Glacier in an Argentina flips over.

As the watching crowd chatters excitedly, the bottom half of the iceberg emerges slowly the ocean, sending a torrent of water rushing down its side.

Fjord Iceberg Flips

Iceberg just flipped over in Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon (Iceland)

Hello haters, before you comment on anything, read carefully the title of the video Iceberg JUST flipped over.... well, that means you won't see it turn around. That just happened and, as it was unexpected, I only got to catch the moment right after. The ice you see was under water a minute ago.
Enjoy!

End of Iceberg Flip (Antarctica)

Video of an huge iceberg that started flipping before our very eyes in our cruise to Antarctica. The sight was amazing, unfortunately I have missed the start of flip. Even though, this is still quite incredible.
We were on a small zodiac boat, hence the instability of the picture.
