Mitokusan Sanbutsuji Temple is a mountain temple on the premises of 900-meter high Mt. Mitoku.
Its rear temple, called Nageire Hall, or “Thrown-In Hall,” is a designated National Treasure and is a structure unlike any other, built on a steep precipice at a sharp vertical.
Originally this temple was used for Shugendo training and is also listed as The Most Dangerous National Treasure in Japan. For visitors considering mountain climbing, Mt. Mitoku has narrow roads, slippery slopes and areas where chain supports are necessary to advance.
