Driving around Iqaluit, Nunavut

Iqaluit is the capital city of Nunavut, a territory in Canada. It has a population of 7,429, according to Statistics Canada's 2021 census. Residents are called Iqalummiut. There are no roads that connect the city to any other community. For much of the year, it's a fly-in-only city.

Our very last stop on our social media powered exploration of Canada and the United States took us to the remote northern territory of Nunavut in Canada. The very new territory is little known by most North Americans, so we set out to explore and share our findings for your behalf. Admittedly the climate in Iqaluit, Nunavut sucks. That just means that when the weather is good, it is enjoyed more. Working here also allowed Kelvin to self-finance The Rather Odd Journey project.

Iqaluit at –46 C

According to Environment Canada, it was –46 C up to 02:27, –44 C between 02:27 and 0:38, and –38 C for the rest (all temperatures include wind chill).

Nunavut

We were on the cusp of the 7th leg of the Canada C3 journey when we entered Nunavut for the first time in late July. Iqaluit's vibrant culture and welcoming community members set the tone for a month of sailing through Canada’s largest territory and learning about its peoples, its traditions, its natural wonders, and its bright future. We were inspired by the resilience and the openness of the Inuit, and we hope to learn more about the path towards reconciliation. The massive chunks of sea ice, majestic icebergs, and midnight sun we observed in Nunavut left us in awe. The warm reception we received in each community we visited will remain in our hearts for years to come. Thank you Nunavut. We hope to see you again soon.

Nous sommes entrés au Nunavut pour la première fois à la fin du mois de juillet, sur le point d’entamer l’étape 7 de l’expédition Canada C3. La culture dynamique d'Iqaluit et les membres de la communauté accueillants ont donné un ton particulier à notre mois de navigation du plus grand territoire au Canada. Durant ce mois, nous avons appris à connaître les peuples du Nunavut, ainsi que ses traditions, ses merveilles naturelles et son avenir prometteur. La résilience et l'ouverture d’esprit des Inuits nous ont beaucoup influencés et nous ont inspirés à continuer à en apprendre davantage au sujet de la réconciliation. Les morceaux massifs de glace de mer, les icebergs majestueux et le soleil de minuit que nous avons observé au Nunavut nous ont laissés bouche bée. L'accueil chaleureux que nous avons reçu dans chaque communauté que nous avons visité restera dans nos cœurs pour les années à venir. Merci Nunavut.

Iqaluit, NU

When we visited Iqaluit, we were amazed to see a city grounded in the traditions of the Inuit people and also alive with a new diverse population. We were so honoured to visit the local mosque and meet Sofia Ali, who believes she is the first Muslim person to be born in Nunavut. Later that same day, we visited the Qayait Society, which is working to teach young people Inuit traditions, like building kayaks. We are absolutely impressed and inspired by the vibrant culture of Iqaluit.

Quand nous avons visité Iqaluit, nous étions ébahis de voir une ville basée sur les traditions du peuple inuit et aussi animée par une nouvelle population diversifiée. Nous étions si honorés de visiter la mosquée locale et de rencontrer Sofia Ali, qui croit qu'elle est la première personne musulmane d'être née au Nunavut. Plus tard sur le même jour, nous avons visité la société Qayait, qui travaille à enseigner les jeunes les traditions inuites, telles que la construction de kayaks. Nous étions absolument impressionnés et inspirés par la culture vive d'Iqaluit.
