12 hours in TRIPOLI, Lebanon: BEST spots to eat!

Please consider SUBSCRIBING!
Instagram:

In my second collaboration with BeirutFood (July 2020), we visited the second biggest city in Lebanon: Tripoli.
Tripoli (or Trablos for Arabic speakers) is often referred to as a dangerous and very poor city. But the only way to actually verify this is by going there. And trust me, it's always an agreeable surprise. The city is so hospitable, the old souks are unmissable, the street food is my favorite in Lebanon and the gastronomy there is so freaking diverse. Yes, the city is going through a lot, but let this food vlog be a reminder that there still is potential ❤️

Here are the places we visited and my main takeaways:
1:18 Accra: The hommos Malisieh is the specialty there
2:23 Moghrabieh Sandwich: They only do it in Tripoli
2:59 Kaakeh Trablosieh Furn: We saw how they make the renowned Kaakeh with sesame seeds
3:39 Carob street Juice: My first time tasting carob and my first street juice
4:04 Mat3am el Saade (Sfiha): Probably my favorite place of the day. It's super cheap, it's SO good and it's a specialty.
4:40 3al Tariq (Shawarma): What a funny concept this restaurant offers! They serve the food in baskets that move with ropes from the kitchen roof to your table.
5:37 Kaakeh Abou Daniel: This little kiosk is so awesome, and Abu Daniel is a legend.
6:09 Baytna (Mezze and Macheweh): Amazing Mezze, the generosity there was unbelievable and I probably tasted my best Kebbeh Naye ever (Raw meat).
8:21 Hallab (Arabic Sweets): Best Arabic sweets I ever tasted. So much better when you eat them fresh from the factory and when you know how much work goes behind each sweet.

Ultimate TRADITIONAL LEBANESE FOOD Tour of Beirut, Lebanon!!

????NICOLAS:
???? MY TRAVEL/FOOD BLOG:

With the dawn of a new day in Beirut, Lebanon, I went on a no holds barred food tour of eastern Beirut with my friend and guide Nico! Come with us as we eat our way through eastern Beirut, Lebanon!

We’d be doing a mix of different foods this morning, which were different from Lebanese mezze.

???? DAVID’S BEEN HERE MERCH:

Our first stop was Abou Hassan, where we watched them prepare ful (fava beans with chickpeas, oil, and lemon juice). They come with onion, tomato, mint, peperoncini, and pickled beets.

I also watched them prepare fatteh, which is bread and chickpeas in yogurt topped with butter and nuts.

They also made a variation of hummus called mousabbaha, which contains salt, garlic, chickpea paste, whole chickpeas, and lime juice.

The ful with pita contained onions, and I loved the fluffiness of the pita. The fatteh was light and creamy. The herbs in it were fantastic. I loved it. It reminded me of Indian chaats.

Finally, the mousabbaha was incredibly hot and flavorful. It was an amazing variation of hummus. The radish, peperoncini, tomatoes, and mint, were also amazing. We got it all for about $7 USD!

Next, we drove through the eastern suburbs of the city. Between the weather and the architecture, it felt like I was somewhere in Europe!

At Café Younes, we had some amazing black Turkish coffee. Then, Nico read my fortune. He saw a dragon, which means something good will happen to me soon!

From there, we walked to a local produce vendor and tried some pomegranate seeds. They also sold tomatoes, onions, potatoes, beets, and more!

Next, we drove 10 minutes to Cocktail Jabbour for some fruit cocktails. They’re like fruit smoothies with fresh fruit on them. I went with the avocado with banana, kiwi, strawberries, strawberry juice, avocado puree, whipped cream, and honey.

It cost $2 and was super healthy and refreshing. There was no added sugar. I loved the curd.

Then, we drove to the ruins of Petit Serail in the heart of Beirut. They’re actually the foundations of an Ottoman palace. You can also see old Roman aqueducts and houses there!

Beirut has been rebuilt seven times. The country also has a rich history and was once controlled by the Phoenicians, Persians, Romans, Byzantines, and Ottomans.

Nearby is Independence Square, which is where commerce happened in the 1960s. There’s also a mosque and church nearby.

The next area we walked through was full of French-inspired architecture. There are silk factories in the area, as well as restaurants and pubs. I loved the bright colors and the architecture.

We arrived at Le Chef, a restaurant that was destroyed at one point. Its owners put up a GoFundMe to fund its reconstruction, and the actor Russell Crowe paid for it to be rebuilt! Here, we’d have homestyle Lebanese cooking.

We had some loubieh (green beans in tomato sauce), maghmour/moussaka (roasted eggplant & chickpea stew), mujadara msufaye (rice & lentil paste with caramelized onions), and kibbeh labanieh (meat fritters with yogurt).

The loubieh was light and chunky and felt really healthy. I really liked the grainy mujadara msufaye, and the roasty maghmour blew me away. It was amazing!

The kibbeh labanieh came with bulgur and was hollow but hearty.

Then, they brought dessert: mahalabieh (orange blossom pudding) and meghli (rice flour pudding with cinnamon, caraway, anise, and nuts).

The meghli was fluffy and thick, with an added crunch from the nuts. I loved the mahalabieh, which was thick and cold and had the nice orange flavor. It reminded me of panna cotta! The whole meal cost us $10 USD!

Beirut, Lebanon || Exploring the Past, Present, and Future

Beirut was my first stop on a 10 day tour of Lebanon. It’s the small countries largest city and is beautifully situated on the Mediterranean coast, surrounded by mountains. The city has a beautiful blend of cultures and perfectly merges it's legendary past with a modern, vibrant way of life. The city has been through a lot in recent history, but the cities resilience is a testament to how vital this middle eastern city is to the region. The city is rising from the ashes but there is still so many scars of a tumultuous past that are very interesting to see and explore. I had a few days here, and this is how it went….

Lebanese MOUNTAIN FOOD TOUR - Lahm Bi Ajeen, Qawarma & Labne | Hrajel, Lebanon

????ARMANDO:
???????? JALSET AL ERZAL:
???? MY TRAVEL/FOOD BLOG:

With another cold morning in the mountains of Lebanon ahead of me, I began my day in the city of Hrajel, roughly one hour northeast of Beirut. I was there to visit some bakeries, check out some more Lebanese food, and see some sights, so let’s explore Hrajel, Lebanon!

My guide Armando and I would basically be going on a breakfast tour! The area was like a winter wonderland. There was snow everywhere!

???? DAVID’S BEEN HERE MERCH:

Our first stop was a small bakery where we met a man spreading two different cheeses on some dough before baking it in an oven for 3 minutes. We got one with cheese and another with lamb (lahm bi ajeen).

The cheese manakish had a nice crust that wasn’t too soft or too crispy, with nice, gooey cheese. It was really good and fresh!

Then, the man made another with a mix of za’atar and sunflower oil on top. As we watched, the owner brought a huge bowl of ground lamb! He added salt and spices into the lamb. The za’atar flatbread smelled incredible!

Then, Armando squeezed some lemon juice of the the lahm bi ajeen. I loved the zestiness of the lemon juice with the meat. Between the lamb, crispy bread, and lemon, it was an amazing breakfast that cost us less than $4 USD in total!

Next, we hopped in the car and drove through a mountain resort area down an icy road to Qalaat Faqra, an archaeological site consisting of Roman ruins from 44 AD. It was built by Emperor Claudius!

Unfortunately, because of the deep snow, we couldn’t go inside the site and see the ruins. It’s a beautiful UNESCO World Heritage Site!

This was one of the coldest and snowiest winters in Lebanon’s history! I highly recommend coming to Lebanon during the warmer months if you want to see the outdoor attractions.

From there, we drove to Saj Mema, where they were cooking the dough on a huge, round flat top grill. As it grilled, the cook added chili paste (hurin), sesame seeds, and four cheeses (hurin). In Arabic, the mix of cheese and chilies is known as jubna hurin.

They cut it into gooey, scorching-hot slices. It was crispy and wasn’t too spicy. I loved the addition of the sesame seeds. It was simple but delicious, and perfect for such a cold day!

After finishing with some Lebanese espressos, we drove to a restaurant called Jalset al Erzal to have a dish called kawarma or qawarma (chopped lamb, usually served with hummus) and labne (a type of yogurt).

They also make a special local cheese and kebabs. In the kitchen, I could see a huge, boiling pot of minced lamb, as well as them making eggs with lamb. They were aso making minced lamb kebabs, chicken kebabs, and baked potatoes.

At our table, we started with a smooth and cloudy arak. Then, we had saj (a large, thin flatbread), bayad ma’a qawarma (kawarma and eggs), labne, and jibneh baladi (local white cheese).

The saj with labne was amazing. I loved how thick and creamy the labne was. It’s locally made, so it’s super fresh. The bayad ma’a qawarma was also great. The saj reminded me of the lavash I ate in Armenia!

The three together made for a cold, warm, creamy, and hearty mix! Then, I tried some tomato, jibneh baladi, and mint in the saj like a wrap. The fresh, juicy tomatoes and soft white cheese were outstanding.

The dense lamb kofta (kebabs) were juicy and charred, and minimal on the spices, unlike Indian kebabs. We also had a baked potato with olive oil. But I had to go bck to the bayad ma’a qawarma.

Finally, we had halawa (sesame dessert) with saj topped with butter and sugar. The syrupy bread with the halawa was amazing. I loved the texture and the sweetness! What an incredible morning in Hrajel!

First impressions of Tripoli Lebanon ????????

→ BONUS SCENES ON PATREON:
Tripoli is liberal -- they follow their own rules. As the second most populated city in Lebanon, Tripoli, or Trablus (طرابلس), has a unique culture of its own that didn't remind me of anything I had seen in Lebanon up until that point. At first glance, it came across as chaotic and scary, but once we got used to it we relaxed and found the people kind and welcoming, and the city to be an interesting mix of old and new, traditional and revolutionary. In this video, join us for the more traditional side of Tripoli: The Citadel, the Souks, the Artisans, the Food and a Hammam.

Trying Lebanon's #1 FAST FOOD - Malak Al Tawouk in Jounieh, Lebanon!!

????ARMANDO:
???????? RESTAURANT: [Instagram Handle/Website]
???? MY TRAVEL/FOOD BLOG:

With another afternoon in Lebanon upon me, I set out to try some local favorites. Lebanese fast food, if you will. Join me as I try some Lebanese fast food in the town of Jounieh, Lebanon!

Jounieh is a coastal town roughly a 30-minute drive north of the capital, Beirut. Armando and I would be exploring the old souk in town, trying some food, and seeing some attractions!

???? DAVID’S BEEN HERE MERCH:

Our first stop was Malak Al Tawouk, a famous sandwich shop that has been around for 25 years. It was busy inside—there was a long line of customers. You can watch them make your sandwich through the windows.

The tawouk sandwich is a wrap that contains grilled chicken chunks, cole slaw, garlic paste, pickles, a red sauce, and French fries. I could also see them making hot dogs and burgers!

I got the medium tawouk. The cole slaw gave it a nice crunch, and the chicken chunks were juicy and tender. The fries added a nice, soft texture, and I loved the thin pita. There were so many flavors between the pickles and sauces!

I could see why tawouk sandwiches are so popular, especially late and night after parties!

Most of the shops in the center of town were closed as it was Sunday. There were lots of brick and sandstone buildings with commercial space on the lowest floor and residential space on top.

After wandering for a while, we made it to the beach, where we found some local fishermen fishing on the rocks! It’s beautiful!

From there, we drove five minutes to Teleferique, a funicular that would take us up to a popular local attraction. It cost 8,000 Lebanese pounds (LBP)/$5.36 USD to park and another 25,000 LBP/$16.74 USD for a round-trip ticket.

The funicular was small—only big enough to seat two people. The views as we rode up, between the buildings. We were riding up to about 500 meters above sea level.

It only took about 5 minutes to Harissa, a municipality at the very top. There, you’ll find the walking path to Our Lady of Lebanon! The views over the town were stunning just before sunset!

Our Lady of Lebanon is 8.5 meters high and 5 meters wide. It’s made of bronze but it’s painted white to look like stone. We couldn’t go up to the top because of COVID, but we could go into the chapel. Remember to be quiet and respectful inside!

The views from there are a true spectacle, though! There’s also a place where you can buy and light candles. There’s also a basilica and another funicular you can ride on a track back down to the funicular.

There were hundreds of people in line to head back down since it was so late in the day. Seeing Jounieh at sunset was so gorgeous and magical. What an amazing afternoon in Jounieh!

Lebanese ARMENIAN FOOD TOUR of Little Armenia in Beirut, Lebanon!!

????ARMANDO:
???? MY TRAVEL/FOOD BLOG:

My adventures in Lebanon continued in the national capital, Beirut, where I went on an epic tour of the Little Armenia neighborhood. Join me and my guide Armando as we explore this unique area of the city!

Little Armenia is home to Beirut’s sizeable Armenian community. Armando is half-Armenian and half-Brazilian, so he was the perfect person to show me around!

???? DAVID’S BEEN HERE MERCH:

Lebanon was a French colony until 1945, so a lot of the people speak French. We started off with some Lebanese coffee for less than $1 USD before stopping by a kebab shop. The guy inside was making a salad, and they had some spices there as well.

We also passed lots of jewelry shops on our way to get some sujuk shawarma. They sold gold necklaces, bracelets, rings, and more.

At Basterma Bedo, we saw the cooks slicing chicken and lamb shawarma off the the giant stacked meat. But we were headed to Basterma Mano, a more famous shop!

It’s said that they have the best shawarma in the city. They have beef, chicken, and lamb shawarma, and they only cost $2.50 USD!

First, the add pickle and tomato, and then they add the sujuk shawarma, and add either garlic sauce or mayo before toasting it in the panini press. The guy even cut some meat off for me. It was really juicy but only mid-level spicy!

The sandwich was crispy with a nice burst of juiciness from the tomatoes. I loved the spicy beef sausage. It was so filling and tasty and took me straight back to my time in Armenia! It was even better when the cook come and added some creamy garlic sauce!

Then, we saw them make some roast beef sandwiches with lettuce, pickle, tomatoes, and more. I got to see them smoking the sujuk and basturma.

From there, we headed through the main square in the area, where we found an open-air cafe where they offer shisha and juices. Shisha is traditional in the Middle East. We also got some freshly pressed carrot juice. Both cost us less than $6 USD.

Then, at Basterma Bedo, we watched them make basturma sandwiches out of the peppery beef and vegetables on a baguette. The beef was really peppery!

The dried, aged, peppery beef was unbelievable. I loved the toasted baguette, pickle, and tomato as well. It was really nice and full of flavor!

Extreme LEBANESE FOOD in Jezzine!! Kibbeh Naaye + Attractions | Lebanon

????NICO:
???????? AL CHALOUF RESTAURANT:
???? MY TRAVEL/FOOD BLOG:

My epic trip through Lebanon continued as I explored the town of Jezzine. Come with me as I check out the city and try some amazing Lebanese food!

Jezzine is a town high in the mountains, roughly a 35-minute drive east from Sidon. It was late January, and the town had just experienced some record-breaking snowfall! The town is home to some churches, a spring, and one of the country’s highest waterfalls!

???? DAVID’S BEEN HERE MERCH:

My guide Nico and I drove through the town on our way to the spring. I loved seeing all the snow on the ground and covering the cars! This winter was worst than others, so even they’re not used to getting this much snow.

We arrived at the spring. The water comes from inside the mountains. The locals come here to get fresh water. The water was so fresh and ice-cold!

I highly recommend wearing boots, a scarf, and other cold weather clothes when you come here in the winter! We stopped at one of the smallest waterfalls in the area. It was really beautiful. There’s also a spring there!

My hands were freezing, so we hopped back into the car and drove to Al Chalouf Restaurant to have some raw meat! The restaurant is gorgeous and has floor-to-ceiling windows on all four sides, so you get a 360-degree view of the town, the mountains, and the pine forests. It also overlooks Jezzine Waterfall!

I started with some arak, a drink made from distilled grapes and anise. It was good and strong, and reminded me of ouzo. Then, I had some nice mixed nuts.

There are 5 raw meat dishes in Lebanon, but they only had three. They also had a wide selection of wines.

First, the raw meat dishes arrived. We had tebleh (plain raw lamb), kibbeh nayye with bulgur wheat, and kibbeh nayye with kamouneh (which is called frakeh). You eat them with a creamy garlic paste and pita!

The tebleh, garlic paste, and mint leaf inside the pita was really soft and tasty. I also loved the kibbeh nayye with kamouneh, which was full of cumin.

The kibbeh nayye with bulgur also blew me away, but the one with kamouneh was insane!

Then, the owner shows us three of their red wines, including a 2015 Saint John blend from Karam Winery, a local winery in Jezzine. It’s 42% merlot, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Syrah, and 10% Cabernet Franc. It’s aged for 12 months in oak barrels!

It wasn’t too bold and was perfect for this winter day! I tried them with their crispy dried apple chips. They’re dried, not fried!

Then, we headed to a nearby closed restaurant’s terrace to get unparalleled views of Jezzine Waterfall, the highest waterfall in the Middle East! It’s incredible!

Next, we drove to La Maison de la Forêt, a beautiful resort is in the middle of a pine forest. They have activities, bungalows, a conference center, a restaurant, and more. I loved the atmosphere, especially the fireplace and the pine trees wrapped in lights!

There, I ordered a Lebanese coffee, which was very similar to Turkish coffee. It was nice and dark! What an amazing day in Jezzine!

Why did Lebanon become so CHEAP?

If you are a tourist in Lebanon, your purchasing power is huge with USD. But if you are a Lebanese citizen earning your salary in Lebanese pounds, you are in a really complex situation and everything is crazy expensive. To illustrate this insane disparity, we took to the streets to see what can 10$ buy you in Lebanon but in the three different exchange rates...
