DUBROVNIK, CROATIA (2023) | 10 BEST Things To Do In & Around Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik is located in the south of Croatia and is relatively isolated from the rest of the country due to a small nook of Bosnia & Herzegovina that intersects the land connection. For centuries, Dubrovnik was an independent republic thriving through extensive trade with other maritime ports. However, the city also suffered attacks, of which the early 90’s war was the most devastating one. Today, Dubrovnik is considered the most picturesque city on the Dalmatian coast thanks to its stunning architecture, beautiful scenery, and ancient walls that once protected the republic.

In this video, we highlight 10 of the best things to do in and around Dubrovnik:
10. Explore the Old Town of Dubrovnik
☑️ Free Walking Tour:
9. Watch the sunset from Mt. Srđ

In this video we finally explore a new city in a new country after 10 months of no international travel!

We make our way into the old town of Dubrovnik, made famous in recent years by being the film set for many scenes in the Game of Thrones series.

We explore inside the walls of this incredible place with marble floor and fascinating history oozing from every building before making our way through a ‘secret’ hole in the wall to jump into the Adriatic sea to cool off.

We finish the day enjoying a delicious dinner with a sunset view from above it all after taking a cable car up to a stunning viewpoint over the city of Dubrovnik and it’s old town.

Best Things to do in Dubrovnik, Croatia ????????

???? Things to do in Split, Croatia ►
???????? Epic Iceland Road Trip ►
???????? My First Day in Egypt ►

Dubrovnik, Croatia - Once it’s own self-ruling republic, Dubrovnik grew wealthy through maritime trade and skilled diplomacy. In the 90s, Dubrovnik suffered significant damage in the Croatian War of Independence. And today, it is hands down the most popular destination in all of Croatia and we only have one day to find the best things to do in Dubrovnik!

Taking a walking tour on the walls around Old Town Dubrovnik is most definitely one of the best things to do in Dubrovnik. You get a view of the entire city, Adriatic Sea, and surrounding Croatian mountain range. Pro Tip: Get to the walls right at 8am when they open or else the sun and people will be too much later in the day! There are even Dubrovnik City Walls Tours you can take for more history of Croatia.

The Trsteno Arboretum is about 25 minutes away from Dubrovnik, and a popular location for filming Game of Thrones. It is a beautiful botanical garden and a great thing to do in Dubrovnik on a hot day.

One of the Best Places to Eat in Dubrovnik is at Barba, a locally owned family restaurant that serves up casual seafood dishes like the octopus burger and sardine fries!

Buža Bar right inside the old town walls of Dubrovnik is one of the most suggested things to do in Dubrovnik from all of you on Instagram (@TravelDeeper). Go there for some great drinks and views, and you can go for a swim or cliff jump right after!

Dubrovnik Cable Car is one of the most popular things to do in Dubrovnik as well. I highly recommend going up for sunset and having an expensive drink at the bar/restaurant at the top. Or pack your own bag and find a quiet place further away to see the incredible Dubrovnik city views from above!

For dinner, one of the Best Places to Eat in Dubrovnik is Lady Pi-Pi. Lady Pi-Pi is famous for their fresh grilled seafood dishes in a really cool atmosphere.

I hope you enjoyed this video of things to do in Dubrovnik, Croatia ❤️ If so, please hit that ???? button, and leave a comment!

20 Things to do in Dubrovnik, Italy Travel Guide Video Transcript: (Grad Dubrovnik Hrvatska):

Is there a more visually stunning city than Dubrovnik? Nicknamed the Pearl of the Adriatic, this destination is sure to capture your gaze. Between it’s white limestone buildings, bright terracotta rooftops and cobalt blue waters that sparkle under the sunlight you'll be dazzled during your visit. This was the final stop of our travels in Croatia, and what a way to finish of our trip.

We walked up, down, and around the Old Town clocking thousands of steps each day, and in this video we’re going to take you on a tour of of the city and show you 15 things to do in Dubrovnik.

We entered the Old Town through Ploće Gate, which is in the east end of the city strolling along the Old Port. We explored the Old Town on foot visiting Dubrovnik Cathedral, which at one point was even funded by England’s King Richard the Lionheart, after he was saved from a shipwreck on the nearby island of Lokrum.

We wandered over to Gundulić Square where a few vendors had set up for the day to sniff out a few treats. We stopped at Big Onofrio Fountain, which was built in 1438 as part of a water system that supplied water from a spring 12km away.

Then, another attraction unexpectedly caught our attention: The Old Pharmacy at the Franciscan Monastery.

Founded in the year 1317, this in-house pharmacy was set up by Franciscan friars and would go on to service the town as well as people living beyond the walls. There’s still a pharmacy within the monastery today.

We tried to visit the Rector’s Palace, which was built in the late 15th century for the elected rector who governed Dubrovnik, but it was under renovation.

A sightseeing boat tour called the “Panorama Excursion” departed from the Old Port and went out around Lokrum Island.

We decided to eat at Mea Culpa, and ordered one Dalmatian Pizza and one Seafood Pizza.

It was time for the main attraction: walking around Dubrovnik’s Old City walls. Admission is 150 kuna for a 2 kilometres walk that takes about 1 hour to complete.

The first set of walls were built in the 9th century, and then in the 14th century these were strengthened with forts along the circumference. This attraction is worth the price tag. From here you can admire the all of the old town, gaze at the shimmering waters of the Adriatic, and look out to the neighbouring Lokrum.

After that quick ice cream break, we walked over to Fort Lovrijenac, also known as St. Lawrence Fortress.

Perched on a cliff 37 meters above the sea, this fortress dominates sea and land entrances from the western side of the city.

We made a stop at Buza Bar, which is great place for drinks anytime of day, but especially so around sunset. Gradac Park, was also used as one of the Game of Thrones filming locations, so you may recognize it from the Purple Wedding.

That’s a wrap for Dubrovnik and the rest of our time in Croatia! We hope this video gave you ideas of some of the things you can do in Dubrovnik on your own visit.

This is part of our Travel in Croatia video series showcasing Croatian food, Croatian culture and Croatian cuisine.

We visited Dubrovnik for 5 days this past fall and had the best time! Dubrovnik is a great city for families, there's plenty to do, and lots of history to take in.

We started our trip with a walk through the old town. The stunning main street is called Stradun. It actually used to be a canal which separated the two former settlements of Dubrovnik, but now it shines with it's pearly white stone all around.

Next, we strolled through the harbour. It's a great place to watch the sunset, or take a quick boat trip to Lokrum Island!

Dubrovnik's old city walls are definitely the main attraction when you visit, and don't skip this one! If you only do one thing, walk the walls! They were first built around the 8th century, but then fortified through the years, and defined more completely in the 14th century.

You'll get stunning views of everything all around. The old town, the orange rooftops, Lokrum Island, the Adriatic Sea, Lovrijenac Fortress, and a beautiful mountain landscape as a backdrop to it all. The walk along the walls is about 2km in total.

Dubrovnik is one of the main places where Game of Thrones was filmed, so if you're a fan, you're going to love walking through and spotting some of the places where famous scenes were filmed.

As soon as you enter the old walls from the Pile Gate, you'll find the Maskeron on the left side. It's a little owl-faced stone that sticks out from the wall. Legend has it that if you are able to stand on the stone and balance, then it's good luck. It's a fun little thing to do as you pass by.

Even though we were here in October, Ivan still took a dip in the Sea. Dubrovnik typically has great weather right through fall time, and the sea is still somewhat warm from being heated all summer, too.

We also stopped at the famous Dubrovnik Cathedral. Legend has it that the famous king, Richard of Lion heart, was on the way back from his 3rd crusade and got caught in a storm just off the coast of Dubrovnik. He barely survived, and said that he'd donate money to build a big church on the first city he stepped foot on, and that ended up being Dubrovnik!

Also inside the Cathedral is the treasury, and what's interesting with the treasury, is how it was safe-guarded. There were three keys - one belonged to the Rector, one to the Bishop , and one to the secretary of the Republic. All three had to be present and turn their keys at the same time for the treasury to be opened. Very creative and fascinating way to keep things safe!

Next, we took a cable car to Mount Srd. Here you can find spectacular views of the old city, the islands, the sea, and everything around! It only takes about 5 minutes to get to the top and the views are incredible.
My kids thought they could see the whole entire world! :) It's also a really special place to visit at sunset!

On our last full day, we visited Lovrijenac Fortress which isn't far from the Old City. Here you'll find a picture perfect, panoramic view of the walls. About 70% of Game of Thrones was actually shot right on Lovrijenac!

What's interesting about Lovrijenac is that it has two sets of walls. The outer walls were built very thick (from about 4-6m+), in order to get greater protection from any enemies from the sea. The inner walls on the other hand, were much thinner (only about 60cm).

They did this because they thought that if anyone actually did conquer the fortress, at least the people would be able to attack back through the thinner walls, and reconquer their territory.

We had a wonderful time in Dubrovnik! It's a magical place to visit and we recommend it to everyone!
