Isle of Man: There is more to the Isle of Man than a Bike Race!

Think of the Isle of Man and you probably think of motorcycles and the Isle of Man TT, but there is so much more to this little island in the Irish sea. Join us as we take a weekend break in the Isle of Man and show you some of our favourite things to do in a weekend!

Intro 0:00

0:32 Peel Castle
A Viking stronghold, Peel Castle stands on St Patrick's Isle, linked to the town of Peel by a causeway. The rugged coastline and the ruins of the castle outer walls make this an interesting stop.

02:00 Niarbyl Bay
Down a long winding lane, past the cafe and steep hill, you arrive at Niarbyl Bay.
Secluded and quaint, you suddenly feel like a fisherman from years gone by.

03:14 The Calf of Man
Calf of Man is a 2.50-square-kilometre island, off the southwest coast. It is separated from the Isle of Man by a narrow stretch of water called the Calf Sound.
There is a cafe and some rugged walking trails too keep you occupied, and on some days you can see the seals basking on the rocks

04:28 Cregneash
A small charming village with a tourist museum, seen on map above.
Home to a flock of the rare four-horned Loaghtan sheep, much of the village is made up of a living museum with the small white cottages forming the exhibits. Inside the victorian farming and fishing equipment is displayed and demonstrated.

05:31 Isle of Man Steam Railway
Starting in Douglas and steaming east to Port Erin via Castletown this narrow gauge railway is a must do attraction. The scenery is stunning and is a superb way to spend an hour or so chugging along the countryside.

07:47 CastleTown
CastleTown is the former Capital of Manx, and is home to Rushen Castle. The narrow streets and fishing cottages make this a delightful place to walk around.
It also holds the annual world tinbath championships.

09:41 Ballaglass Glen
lovely glen to walk through, a nice wooded area with the river flowing through the middle of it with some fantastic waterfalls, and there’s a fairy house hidden along the river too. Plenty of quirks for kids too like the wizard statue along one of the paths.

11:25 Douglas
11:45 Laxey Wheel and Mine
Built in 1854 to pump water from the attached mine, Lady Isabella as she is known is the largest surviving wheel of its kind in the world.

14:07 Manx Electric Railway
Running from Douglas to Ramsey via Laxey this has to be the most picturesque heritage railway (tramway) I have ever been on.
Starting in Laxey and part of the Manx Electric Railway, the
14:29 Snaefell Mountain Railway
offers daily services to the summit.
15:03 Laxey Beach
17:45 Laxey to Ramsey Manx Railway
18:31 Ramsey Harbour
Town on the MANX Electric railway route.

19:22 Port Erin Fish and Chips

The Isle of Man - Railways, Castles and Seals - Isle of Man Travel Video

The Isle of Man - Railways, Castles & Seals - Isle of Man Travel Video is our closest to home travel video. Greg made it his mission on the Isle of Man to prove to Felicity that it’s possible to have an adventure without the need to spend many hours on the plane to get there.

On the Isle of Man, Greg got to share his love of history, exploring both Peel Castle and Rushen Castle as well as riding not just on his beloved steam trains but also on the only electric mountain railway tram on the British Isles. While Greg obsessed over his historic railways - from the Isle of Man Railway to the Manx Electric Railway, Felicity found something more to her taste at The Sound, where wild seals live on the rocks beneath and around The Calf of Man Island. The Isle of Man seals were a delight to watch, so much so that we man have gone back a few times...

Only once did they feel the need to escape - from an escape room at Exit Strategy!

Overall the Isle of Man made for a fun filled adventure which we hope you enjoy.

The places we visited on our journey were:

Introduction: 00:00:00
Milntown Estate: 00:01:40 00:04:24 and 00:08:33
The Studio Theatre: 00:02:43

The Isle Of Man Holiday - July 2023

July 2023's trip to the Isle Of Man!

On this holiday, I went with Debbie and Amy for my birthday. We visited our usual places (Douglas, Paparazzi, Peel Castle, Port Soderick, Port Erin, Cregneash and Silverdale), as well as Ramsey, the top of Snaefell, Langness, Laxey and Castle Town. We even walked miles across Jurby Beach in search of an old shipwreck. I've included some more info about that shipwreck in the paragraph below! Anyway, mid-way through our holiday, Pete and Jan appeared in Paparazzi for my birthday meal to surprise us! They joined us for the rest of the trip and were on the island for just over 24 hours. Turns out they had been sneaking around on the second day of our visit and we were being tracked the whole time so they wouldn't bump into us before the meal.

The ship approached in Isle of Man in pitch darkness and gale-force winds. Suddenly, it came to a full stop. In the confusion and chaos, the captain had beached the ship into the soft sand of Jurby Beach. Rescue flares were shot up, and the rescue party had to descend down the nearby headland to reach the crew, which was pretty steep. Luckily, all 13 people on board were saved, and the ship was left to rot along the shore.

Isle of Man | British Crown Dependency | Summer Getaway | 3-date Itinerary

After a long and cold winter,
'Tis summer that has knocked on the doors..
Off I embark on a new adventure,
Eager to discover new shores

This summer, I am off on a trip to the Isle of Man, a small island in the Irish sea tucked between the mainlands of UK and Ireland.
This gorgeous tiny island is a British crown dependency, but not technically a part of the UK.

Here are some interesting facts about Man:

1) It hosts the annual TT races, one of the most prestigious motorcycle racing in the world.

2) It has the Oldest Continuous Parliament in the World, supposedly 1000 years old with its unbroken existence!!

3) The Island has its own language, Manx Gaelic, currently endangered, deriving its roots from the Celtic group of languages.

4) It is the only country to have the tag of UNESCO Biosphere region, for the entire geographical landscape.

5) It houses the Laxey Water Wheel or the beloved Lady Isabella, the largest working water wheel in the world.

6) It is home to the native Loaghton sheep, known to grow 4, sometimes even 6 massive horns and the tail-less Manx cat.

7) The old capital city of Castletown has houses built with tiny fairy doors to welcome fairies or the Little People

8) It’s considered bad luck to say r-a-t on the Isle Of Man, people call them long-tails instead.
