Tipp: Don't book at Camel Tours. We were not satisfied with our driver Roberto, since he pushes very aggressively to keep the schedule. You'll have more then enough time at the market to buy souvenirs but will be urged to hurry up at the sights like salt flat, salt hotel or Geysirs. No sense of customer is king was visible :-(

THE WORLD'S BIGGEST MIRROR - BOLIVIA'S SALT FLATS // BOLIVIA TRAVEL VLOG

The Bolivian Salt Flats are on many travelers bucketlists, and they were on ours as well! To make sure we really soaked in the area, we took a three day tour exploring the Uyuni Salt Flats (Uyuni is the town nearest the salt flats) and the region surrounding it which include the Siloli Desert and a National Reserve. We did the tour in reverse of most routes so we could save the best for last and visit the classic site of the Uyuni Salt Flats on the last day of our tour (so stay tuned in the video to see the world's largest mirror at the end!).

We had an amazing time on this trip, but wouldn't actually recommend the tour company we booked with. Instead, you can look at the same route on GetYourGuide (which uses a different company) that might be better to book with :)

In the days leading up to visiting Salar de Uyuni, we travel more than 1000kms in a Toyota Landcruiser (from 1990...yep!) and see desolate land that held many surprises. We come across formations made by lava from volcanic eruptions, see llamas roaming the desert, visit a thermal hot spring in the middle of the night, visit geysers as they blow steam, and visit many colourful lakes filled with flamingoes including Laguna Colorada, Laguna Honda, and Laguna Chiarcota. The first two days of the tour were packed, and that was before the cherry on top - the classic visit to the Salt Flats.

The third day of our tour was the big day! We started off with a visit to the train cemetery where we got some cool drone shots but if we’re honest, we thought it was a bit overrated. After a delicious lunch we finally arrive at the Salar de Uyuni (Uyuni Salt Flats) and spent hours taking hilarious perspective photos with the help of our guide. Just before the sun began setting we hop in the 4X4 one more time to go to a spot where about 1 inch of water is sitting atop the salt, giving the mirror effect we have been dreaming of seeing. The sunset that followed was possibly the best of our lives. The colors were incredible, and seeing them reflected in the world's largest mirror is something that will stay with us always.

LIFE’S ADVENTURE OF PURE MAGIC IN BOLIVIA – Salar de Uyuni – The Biggest Mirror on Earth

Salar de Uyuni or Salar de Tunupa is the world's largest salt flat at 10 582 square kilometers – basically 100 x 100 km -4 086 sq mi. It is in the Daniel Campos Province in Potosí in southwest Bolivia, near the crest of the Andes and is at an elevation of 3 656 meters 11 995 ft above sea level.

The Salar was formed as a result of transformations between several prehistoric lakes. It is covered by a few meters of salt crust, which has an extraordinary flatness with the average elevation variations within one meter over the entire area of the Salar. The crust serves as a source of salt and covers a pool of brine, which is exceptionally rich in lithium. It contains 50 % to 70 % of the world's known lithium reserves, which is in the process of being extracted. The large area, clear skies, and exceptional flatness of the surface make the Salar an ideal object for calibrating the altimeters of Earth observation satellites.

The Salar serves as the major transport route across the Bolivian Altiplano and is a major breeding ground for several species of flamingos. Salar de Uyuni is also a climatological transitional zone since the towering tropical cumulus congestus and cumulonimbus incus clouds that form in the eastern part of the salt flat during the summer cannot permeate beyond its drier western edges, near the Chilean border and the Atacama Desert.Salar de Uyuni is part of the Altiplano of Bolivia in South America. The Altiplano is a high plateau, which was formed during uplift of the Andes mountains. The plateau includes fresh and saltwater lakes as well as salt flats and is surrounded by mountains with no drainage outlets.

This was my second expedition to Bolivia’s Salty plains since first time I visited Salar de Uyuni in July 2013 when plains were dry – and my dream was always to see Salar de Uyuni as the Biggest Mirror Lake on the Planet - for that one has to come in the end of rainy season - February up to April. So here it is in flash!

Cheers and Enjoy

Salar de Uyuni, World's Largest Salt Flat

Peru & Bolivia Episode 7: After a night bus from La Paz to Uyuni, we embarked on a 3 day Jeep tour to the salt flat of Uyuni and the Bolivian high plateau Altiplano with its volcanoes and lagoons full of flamingos. The Biggest Salt Flat surface on earth Salar De Uyuni Bolivia

#Bolivia #Travel #348

The biggest Salt Flats in the world in Salar De Uyuni Bolivia

Someone told me Bolivia is a great country in South America, and my answer to that was “I Bo li via” I really do Believe !!
I have been on a 4 day trip from San Pedro de Atacama (Chile) to Bolivia.
It’s a popular tour with jeeps that tourists book while they’re in San Pedro, you can book it in one of the many little travel agencies in San Pedro.
The tour that I did was with Cordillera Travel and I was the only one who didn’t continue to travel further into Bolivia after arriving in Uyuni at the end of the trip, I booked a tour that had to bring me back to Chile from where I had my flight back home. So that’s the 4 day trip, most people do the 3 day trip to continue onward travel in Bolivia to Potosi or La Paz.
Maybe some other time I will go back to Bolivia to see some more of the country, but I’m really happy of what I have seen already, beautiful landscapes like the Siloli desert with crazy rock formations, the Laguna Verde, Laguna Honda and some other altiplano lakes and offcourse the amazing Salt flats of Uyuni with Cactus Island (Incahuasi Island).
Also on this tour was the train graveyard, old rusty trains abandoned in the middle of the desert.
In San Pedro I bought enough snacks for the road, 5 liters of water cause when going on high altitude you need to drink allot and rented a sleeping bag for the cold nights in the desert, cause the sleeping places down the road are very basic so you need a sleeping bag. Make sure to take tablets against altitude sickness cause you will be going up to 5000 m above sea level. To my surprise I only had a light headache and didn’t had to use any tablets. The next day my headache was over and my body was adjusted to the high altitude.

Lake Salar de Uyuni - Bolivia

Lake Salar de Uyuni, Bolivia
Lake Salar de Uyuni, also know as Salar de Tunupa, is one of the most interesting, unique and beautiful lakes in Bolivia. The largest salt marsh in the world. It has an area of about 10,582 square kilometers of the land in the region of Potosi and lies at an altitude of about 3,650 meters (internal plateau of the Central Andes). Salar de Uyuni is a part of the Bolivian Altiplano in North America. Altiplano, high plateau is formed during the uplift of the Andes mountains. On the Plateau occur as freshwater lagoons and salt water lagoon. It is completely surrounded by mountains and there is no source of any water leakage. In dry season, salt flat expanse covered with dry salt, but in the rainy season, the vast expanses covered by a thin layer of water. This site was created as a result of the conversion of several prehistoric lakes. It is covered with a salt crust, speakers at a height of several meters. They contain 50 to 70 percent of the work's reserves of lithium and also contains large amount of sodium, potassium, magnesium and borax too. Salar de Uyuni serves as the main transport route through the Bolivian Altiplano and is a primary residence for several species of pink flamingos. In the rainy season, from November to March, the lake-marsh Uyuni tuns into a hug mirror — salt cell covered by a very thin layer of clear water, which reflects the sky, and i becomes quite clear, exactly, the horizon. Every year it attracts about 60,000 tourists from around the world. And no wonder, because this salt desert is considered one of the most beautiful places in the world. For these sites are characterized by large swings in temperature, at night it can drop below zero, and often in afternoon are swarm up to 40-50 degrees Celsius. Tourism and salt is main source of income. The attraction of tourist from all over the world , number of hotels have been built for accommodation. Due to lack of conventional construction materials, many of them are almost entirely build by salt blocks, just like walls, roof, furniture and sculpture too. The first salt hotel was built in 1995 in the center of the salt zone, and soon its became a popular for tourist destination. Later many more construction are made out of salt.

Salar de Uyuni in Uyuni, Bolivia

Salar de Uyuni (or Salar de Tunupa) is the world's largest salt flat, at 10,582 square kilometers. It is in the Daniel Campos Province in Potosí in southwest Bolivia, near the crest of the Andes and is at an elevation of 3,656 meters above sea level.

It contains 50% to 70% of the world's known lithium reserves. The large area, clear skies, and exceptional flatness of the surface make the Salar an ideal object for calibrating the altimeters of Earth observation satellites. Following rain, a thin layer of dead calm water transforms the flat into the world's largest mirror, 129 kilometres across.

The Salar serves as the major transport route across the Bolivian Altiplano and is a major breeding ground for several species of flamingos. Salar de Uyuni is also a climatological transitional zone since the towering tropical cumulus congestus and cumulonimbus incus clouds that form in the eastern part of the salt flat during the summer cannot permeate beyond its drier western edges, near the Chilean border and the Atacama Desert.

The formation of Salar de Uyuni
Containing an estimated 10 billion tonnes of salt, the question often arises as to how Salar de Uyuni was formed. Essentially, the Altiplano (high plateau) here had no drainage outlets, which meant that water from the surrounding mountains once collated to form a giant lake. High salinity meant that whilst this vast, prehistoric lake has long since evaporated under the fierce Andean sun, a thick crust of salt remains, forming what we now recognise as the salt flats of Salar de Uyuni.

Aymaran legend provides an alternative explanation, involving the mountains surrounding the salt flats, Kusina, Kusku and Tunupa. The story is that these mountains were once giant people, and Tunupa and Kusku were married. When Kusku betrayed his wife for Kusina, Tunupa’s tears are said to have formed the salt flats.

Experiencing Salar de Uyuni
The best and most popular way to fully experience Salar de Uyuni is by taking a 4×4 tour across the salt flats. It’s worth noting that shared tours usually accommodate for up to 6 tourists, and thus for a more comfortable experience, a private tour should be arranged. Such tours usually involve a minimum of one nights stay in rather basic accommodation, and thus it is recommended that you bring plenty of warm clothes and a warm sleeping bag for the night. Further, sun cream is a necessity as the reflections from the salt accentuate the suns effect.

Adventurous travellers may also wish to try a night’s stay in one of the areas renowned salt hotels. With no building materials around for miles, some locals have taken it upon themselves to build structures from bricks of cemented salt. In these hotels, everything from the beds and tables to the flush toilets are constructed from salt blocks. Even if you don’t fancy staying, you can usually view these hotels during the day for a nominal fee.

In the dry season, Salar de Uyuni is a surreal experience not to be missed. However, rain takes it to a whole new level. As a thin sheet of water covers the flats, it reflects a perfect representation of the sky above so that it is impossible to tell where sky ends and the land begins.

Best time to visit Salar de Uyuni
The best time to visit Salar de Uyuni ultimately depends upon the experience you are looking for. For the best climate, we recommend you visit between July and October. However, for an increased chance of seeing the reflective surfaces, you should visit between March and April.

How to get to Salar de Uyuni
Most tours to Salar de Uyuni originate from the small town of Uyuni. To get to Uyuni, you have a number of options available to you. Most people choose to travel from Ororo, where it is 7 hours by train, or 8 hours by bus. These tickets are quite often booked up on the day, so it is recommended to book in advance. Alternatively, you can take a bus from La Paz (12-15 hours) or Potosi (6-7 hours). Lastly, you can choose to rent a car or fly into Uyuni’s small airport from La Paz.

We do adventurous pre wedding & elopement photography, destination weddings world wide. Please fell free to share with me your adventure ideas about couple photoshoot of your dream. There are still many places I've never been before and I dream to do amazing project there. For example, I want to shoot in Bhutan, Nepal mountains and in Morocco desert, as well as Botswana, Kenya safari camp honeymoons.

I am a destination wedding photographer, so always ready to go for a new trip with an adventures couple to create their beautiful love story. In December we made an adventure pre wedding photoshoot in really fantastic places – Salar de Uyuni and Altiplano plateau in Bolivia and Atacama desert in Chile. We spent 6 days with our couple from Hong Kong Raymond and Lain making an elopement photosession. In Bolivia, Salar de Uyuni and Altiplano plateau, and in Chile, Atacama desert, we were shooting at high altitude from 3700 to 5000 meters and of course weather conditions were pretty rough there. Harsh sun, strong wind, low temperature, lack of oxygen – all these made destination pre-wedding photoshoot rather difficult for everyone, but our couple was ready to overcome all the difficulties to create their engagement.

During 6 days we were storytellers of Raymond and Lain’s unique road trip from the Atacama desert, Chile to Salar de Uyuni, Bolivia. We had chosen extraordinary locations for their elopement photography trip: the Atacama desert, Valley of the Moon, Death Valley, Laguna Colorada, Laguna Verde, Arbol de Pierda, volcanos, train cemetery and the most famous salt flats of Salar de Uyuni with its mirror-like salt lake surface reflection. Our couple had various types of clothes and also chose a casual style for their destination pre wedding photoshoot, so the pictures are more dynamic and lifestyle.
As elopement adventure photographers we paid a lot of attention to details, cared about everything, so the trip was not just a wonderful prewedding phototour but it was a fun adventure. As the result our couple got the pictures and also a backstage video from our professional photo and video team. So, please, enjoy watching the video and share it in your social networks to show how a destination wedding photographer works in such an amazing part of the world as Salar de Uyuni in Bolivia and the Atacama desert in Chile.
