SURPRISED by SERBIA! ???????? - First time in BELGRADE (Europe's HIDDEN GEM)
In this week's travel vlog we visit the capital of Serbia, Belgrade, for the first time. We were completely surprised by Serbia and think it's a definitely one of Europe's hidden gems.
We start off our day in Belgrade at Republic Square where we drink a glass of hot rakija. After strolling down Knez Mihailova Street we eat a slice of Pizza topped with salad dressing from the popular shop called Bucko Pizza. We then make a stop at St. Michael's Cathedral and visit the Belgrade Fortress where we take in the beautiful view of the Danube river. At Beograd Café we try some traditional Serbian coffee and a local alcohol called Pelinkovac. Since there are popcorn stands everywhere on the streets, we grab a box of popcorn, followed by some Serbian cookies from the farmers market. After a couple cocktails at Kultura Bar we finally end the day with dinner at a restaurant called Cevaplija where we eat delicious Serbian foods such as Gibanica and grilled meat with dips.

48 Hours in Belgrade and Zemun || Serbia Travel Vlog
I knew nothing about Belgrade, which is why I had to go. I hadn’t seen photos, hadn’t researched anything, and didn’t know what to expect. I could enter this country with fresh eyes and capture it as I saw it. What I saw really impressed me. Incredibly detailed churches, a historic fortress, a bustling shopping district, and a vibrant waterfront. Though I didn’t have time to leave the capital, there was an old fishing village just a few miles away which gave me a more traditional taste for Serbia to compliment the modern cityscape. All in all, Belgrade really surprised me and I have to put it near the top of my list of Balkan cities.

Belgrade (Serbian: Београд, Beograd) — meaning 'White City' — is the capital of the Republic of Serbia. Various styles of architecture dominate the city while its recent resurgence as the leading hub in south-eastern Europe makes it a must-see destination.
Kalemegdan - Belgrade Fortress. Once an important military fortification, it now serves as the central park of Belgrade. Accessible from the end of the Knez Mihailova street, it offers beautiful views, especially during sunset. The largest part of is a park, along with the fortress walls, with several cafes, tennis and basketball courts, museums and an observatory. Don't forget to take a look at the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers, and the statue of Pobednik (Winner), one of the symbols of Belgrade.Take tram number 2 from the railway station and disembark at the 4th stop (Kalemdag)to avoid the walking uphill.
Republic Square (Main Square). Main meeting point in the city (also called kod konja - by the horse), right next to the statue of Mihailo Obrenovic (riding a horse), National Theater, National Museum and Knez Mihailova Street. Best place to arrange a meeting.
The National Assembly of Serbia (Serbian Cyrillic: Народна Скупштина Србије), located across from the Old Royal Palace, at Nikola Pasic Sqaure.
St. Mark's Church (Serbian Cyrillic: Црква Св. Марка) built from 1931 to 1940 is located in Tašmajdan park in Belgrade, near the Parliament of Serbia. It was designed as a copy of the famous Gračanica monastery near Priština. Behind the church, there is the Russian Orthodox Church of the Holy Trinity, built by White Russian immigrants who came to Serbia after the Russian Revolution of 1917-1922.

Belgrade (pronounced [berad] (listen); names in other languages) is Serbia's capital and biggest city. It is situated at the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers, as well as at the intersection of the Pannonian Plain and the Balkan Peninsula. Belgrade is one of the world's oldest continually inhabited cities. The Vina culture, one of Europe's most prominent prehistoric cultures, emerged in the Belgrade region in the sixth millennium BC. Thraco-Dacians occupied the territory in antiquity, and Celts founded the city after 279 BC, named it Singidn. It was captured by the Romans during Augustus' reign and granted Roman city powers in the mid-second century. It was inhabited by Slavs in the 520s and passed through the hands of the Byzantine Empire, the Frankish Empire, the Bulgarian Empire, and the Kingdom of Hungary multiple times until becoming the seat of Serbian King Stefan Dragutin in 1284. Under the reign of Stefan Lazarevi, Belgrade was the capital of the Serbian Despotate, but his successor, ura Brankovi, restored it to the Hungarian monarch in 1427. Noon bells rung in support of the Hungarian troops against the Ottoman Empire during the siege of Budapest in 1456 are still a prevalent church practice today. The Ottomans seized Belgrade in 1521, and it became the headquarters of the Sanjak of Smederevo. It repeatedly changed hands between Ottoman and Habsburg administration, resulting in the destruction of most of the city during the Ottoman-Habsburg wars.
