In this weeks episode we head down to Trinity Marina in Hinckley to catch up with my friend Jordan who has recently bought himself a Canal Boat to live in.
The last time Jordan appeared on Drunk On Wanderlust we were wild camping The Great Glen way together, but since then a lot has changed in his life!
He decided narrow boat life was the way forward, and hasn’t looked back. He kindly invited myself and Danni to stay for a few days to experience first hand the realities of Canal boat living In the UK and of course the costs involved.
We had a good look around his boat and found out the pros and cons compared to living in a conventional house or flat. After that we took the canal boat for a trip down Ashby Canal, so I could have a go at driving the narrow boat and try my hand at mooring for the first time.
We made it to Sutton Wharf where we moored about 100 meters from the cafe.
I loved every minute and was eager to hear about the costs involved of owning a canal boat home in England.
It was interesting to see how the narrow boat was heated and how the electricity worked whilst out on the water, also the diesel costs.
Jordan is definitely happy with his decision, and seems very content with boat life ???? I must admit I am quite tempted myself! But atm, whilst I’m travelling so much and with my plans to go abroad for a while next year it wouldn’t be feasible.

I used to be an 80s music popstar, now I'm a waterways enthusiast, with a thing for canal boats, canal boat holidays, canal walks, river walks and discovering the gorgeous English countryside.
Thirty years ago, I was in the band The Housemartins, with my talented friends Paul Heaton, Norman Cook (aka Fatboy Slim) and Hugh Whittaker. We had chart success with songs like Happy Hour, Caravan of Love, Build and Me And The Farmer.
But that was then. These days, my happy hours consist of family time - and making films about the UK's amazing waterways. Either on foot or at the tiller of a narrowboat. I love canals, canal boats and canal boat holidays, making films about my time on or near the water. I also love to take English countryside walks alongside rivers and canals.

Winter Morning Routine Living on a Canal Boat Full-Time
Join us for a couple of typical mornings aboard our home, narrowboat Alba. In the second lockdown, we decided to get on with a few DIY projects. First, we begin tiling the splashback in the kitchen and painting our bathroom. We are also going on a pre-birthday walk to Avebury stone circle here in Wiltshire and experience some amazing strong winds.

Come and have a look inside our 68ft narrowboat floating home.Full Narrowboat tour.
For those of you that have been following our journey from the start of our boat renovations you would have seen the inside each week, but here we show you our narrowboat interior as a whole in this one vlog, giving details of storage space, what we use each nook and cranny for and you get to have a look at our narrowboat engine.
The boat is not finished completely and of course we will always have little jobs along the way to keep us busy as we continuously cruise the waterways. This vlog shows you how far we have come to turn a once empty narrowboat into our floating tiny home.

Fuelboat Alton southbound ice-breaking towards Bollington on the Macclesfield Canal.
I thought I would share a few minutes at the stern of one of England's oldest, still working, historic narrowboats that delivers fuels (coal, gas, diesel, logs etc) to people who live long-term on the canals; so-called 'liveaboards'.
If you want to see more detail about the operations of a typical so-called 'fuelboat' or 'coalboat' a video by David Johns @CruisingTheCut entitled 209. A day in the life of a fuel boat on the UK canals is the best one that I have come across so far:
Narrowboat Alton was built by Harland & Wolff Ltd at Woolwich in 1936; full details on the National Historic Ships website at
Winters in my part of northern England have been changing to predominantly mild in recent years but you do get the occasional cold snap that reminds me of how they were back when I was a kid/teen in the 70s. This is year 2024 and one such cold snap is occurring now as I type this whilst recuperating after 3 days graft on our local canals aboard fuelboat Alton. Carefully step aboard the icy gunwales with me and share the smoky experience!
