2021 Multihull of the Year: Explocat 52 Explained [BOAT TOUR]

In this video we tour 2021 Multihull Of the Year Winner, the Explocat 52 cruising catamaran by Garcia Yachts. It’s a catamaran designed for blue water cruising, but not just in the trade winds and tropics like most of the cats we review…instead this boat is destined to go well off the beaten path…a true expedition yacht who’s builder has nearly 50 years experience in building metal boats, yet is a sister yard to the high performance Outremer catamarans and Gunboat.

The ultimate aluminium catamaran Garcia Explocat 52 Metal multihull for comfortable circumnavigation

o reconcile what might seem contradictory, to bring together what seemed incompatible, it took all the experience of Garcia Yachts, the know-how of its teams, the intelligence of our partners, architect and designer, to propose a new way to explore the world: the Explocat 52.

Twin aluminium hulls with shallow draft, built to withstand all the hazards of the most magical long-distance voyages, with bows that can brave all storms, in complete serenity, the Explocat 52 is perfectly in line with the historical Garcia lineage.

Handleable by a crew of two, who are always well protected thanks to the intelligence of its unique design, its generous sail area and controlled weight make the miles scroll like never before, in first-class comfort.

A subtle blend of proven solutions and innovations that offer you a truly unique sailing experience. This is so true so that the British sailor Pete Goss describes this unit as the ideal machine for everyone being able of “stretching boundaries”.

Naval architecture
Displaying the Garcia Yachts coat of arms on its hull means it perfectly, and in every respect, meets the qualities required of a sailboat designed to sail independently anywhere on the planet.

Designed by naval architect Pierre Delion, the Explocat 52 is no exception to the rule: design, structure and materials are determined so that you can face the most challenging conditions in complete serenity.

With its millimetre-precision deck layout, rigid platform, generous sail plan, serious deck hardware, ergonomic sail handling station offering protection and visibility to a happy crew, the Explocat 52 is the result of thousands of hours of engineering, discussion and reflection, for an exclusive result.

And like the carrying capacity, the water or fuel tanks, the energy sources have also been adapted to meet the most far-off sailing projects, the Explocat 52 is THE catamaran setting new standards for unlimited cruising.

The Explocat 52’s external steering station can also be equipped with a pendulum helm system. This equipment allows you to steer either in a low position sheltered from the cockpit, or high up for manoeuvring and sailing in good weather conditions.

The front cockpit also contributes to making the Explocat 52 an outstanding unit. From this forward cockpit, the crew will be able to carry out various types of observation of the natural environment.

Interior Design
Due to Darnet Design, the interior design of the Explocat 52 offers all the functional advantages of a catamaran on an exploration yacht, with a great panoramic view from every part of the saloon.

Reaching the northernmost latitudes, the most remote islands, can be achieved in unequalled comfort. Insulation, equipment, woodwork and upholstery are all to the most exacting standards sailors demand from the Exploration range.

From the interior helm station, you will of course enjoy the magnificent environment around you, keep watch, and be able to maintain your course on your Explocat 52, nicely warm and dry, whatever the weather may be doing.

The dimensions and brightness of the saloon, galley, cabins and bathrooms, in all the configurations offered or in the one you have designed, are unparalleled. Moving around between these different private spaces, or to the outside, directly to the vast aft cockpit, or via the solid watertight door opening onto the forward cockpit, is exceptional.

With the Explocat 52, Garcia Yachts has given the multihull a reputation, that of the most beautiful of programmes: that of infinite possibilities.

WAVE 50 Catamaran - Boat Review Teaser - Multihulls World - Multicoques Mag

Full test in Multihulls World #182:

This very original design catamaran had its world premiere at the Cannes Yachting Festival 2021.
It's impossible to miss this catamaran: there’s an arch that extends the coachroof all the way to the forestay fitting, bows whose slope is strongly reversed, and huge mirror windows! Agnieszka Bona, responsible for the design of this new boat built in Szczecin, in the northwest of Poland, makes no secret of the fact that the main idea of the Wave 50 project is to be noticed... the famous arch can also disappear if a client wishes. But in the end, this superstructure, however unusual it may be, is not unwelcome - it provides shade to the forward cockpit without obscuring the view of the water from the helm station, which is set very far aft on a cantilevered flybridge. After the surprise of the first visit, you discover a well-designed sail maneuvering station where you aren’t forced to get on your hands and knees to operate the winches. As for the interior, it too is certainly audacious but ultimately attractive. The Wave 50 is available in a power version and a Wave 60 is also offered.

MULTIHULL OF THE YEAR - Results 2022 - Multihulls World - Multicoques Mag

Winner Multihull of the Year 2022

Under 40’ Sail category
MARLIN 33
In this category, where four trimarans were competing, it was the all-carbon model built in Denmark that won by a wide margin, with nearly half the votes. Obviously, we've made an appointment to test this little rocket ship for you!

Winner Multihull of the Year – 40 ‘-45’Sail category
LEOPARD 42
Three cruising catamarans and one trimaran competed in this section, and South African builder Robertson & Caine took the top spot with 37% of the votes - the Seawind 1370 came in second with 24% of the votes.

Winner Multihull of the Year – 45’-55’ Sail category
RAPIDO 50
Victory for this fast and folding trimaran built in Vietnam, came as a real surprise in a category which included models with very distinct personalities. While all the other competitors obtained very similar results, ranging from 17 to 20% of the votes, the Rapido took almost 27% of the votes.

Winner Multihull of the Year - Over 55’ Sail category
OUTREMER 55
Among the five competitors in the largest sailing multihulls category, it was the Outremer that got everyone in agreement, taking almost 30% of the votes, quite some way ahead of the second-placed Lagoon 55 which received 20.85% of the votes. A result that was celebrated at home since the manufacturer is actually based at La Grande-Motte!

Winner Multihull of the Year - Under 40’ Power category
MY4.S
Two cruising boats and two opens competed in this category, and it was the cabin versions that topped the poll. The MY4.S, the new Sedan from Fountaine Pajot, won by a narrow margin over the Herley Boats 3400 (33% against 29).

Winner Multihull of the Year – 40’-60’ Power category
AVENTURA 14
Aventura Catamarans' flagship powercat appears to have made an excellent impression since first being presented at Cannes back in September, taking the top spot in this category with 40% of the votes. The LEEN 56 trimaran came in 2nd place, with 24%.

Winner Multihull of the Year – Multiyachts Power category
SILENT 60
A clear victory for the Silent 60, the only electric catamaran among the four other nominees, with 29% of the votes, demonstrating that both technology and users are now ready for a different kind of boating. The luxurious long Island 78 Power came second with 17%.

NEEL 52 - Seatrials - Multihulls World

► Full test in Multihulls World N°194:

► On the agenda for the replacement of the NEEL 51: finesse at the helm worthy of a racing monohull, but equally suited to every possible use - charter, blue water cruising, and why not racing? The NEEL 52 offers various layouts ranging from 4 to 6 cabins, and even two separate crew accommodation areas. This new model logically abandons the Joubert/Nivelt stamp, taking on that of Marc Lombard Yacht Design – as with the most recent models from the brand. Forward, the three hulls feature a pronounced inverted bow: an excellent way to increase the waterline length without adding any real weight to the multihull – noting that the displacement is kept under control, at just short of 28,000 pounds. The NEEL 52 is capable of carrying almost 7 tons in cruising mode.

► TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS
Builder: NEEL-TRIMARANS
Architect: Marc Lombard Yacht Design
Length: 52’2” (15.9 m)
Beam: 28’10” (8.8 m)
Draft: 6’3” (1.9 m)
Light displacement: 27,780 lbs (12.6 t)
Mainsail: 1,022/1,098 sq ft (95/102 m²)
Genoa: 764 sq ft (71 m²)
Staysail: 344 sq ft (32 m²)
Water: 158 US gal (600 l)
Fuel: 185 US gal (700 l)
Engine: 110 HP
