Whiskey Lakes Dunes 4X4 Part 2 - Bilene, Mozambique

This is an incredible African coastal city closer to Gauteng than Durban & situated less than 100km from the South African border (if travelling by vehicle). This city is well worth visiting if you are looking to visit a coastal city. Take a stroll along the coconut palm promenade. Marvel at the stark contrast between the modern & older Portuguese influenced architecture. Experience the bright lights of Maputo at night.

We’re in Bilene for the next leg of our Mozambique travel series! Bilene lies 200km north of Maputo in the Gaza Province. It’s famous for a few things and during this leg we’ll be experiencing them all - the expansive lagoon, dunes, delectable prego & sunsets! First we make a mandatory roadside Pao purchase before turning off towards Bilene.
We’re staying at Boa Vista Resort! It’s situated right on Lagoa Uembje (Lagoon). This 1 bedroom service chalet is only 1200MZN/R350/19USD per night for 2 adults. We found Boa Vista Resort on Agoda (prices may vary)
It’s self-catering & has an en-suite, patio, double bed, barbecue facilities and well located.
Perfectly appointed along Lagoa Uembje we have a front row seat for Bilene’s famous sunset! Known for its sunsets, we specifically chose Bilene to be able to experience some of the best sunsets you will ever experience.
Bilene is known for its unmissable dunes! Naturally separating Lagoa Uembje (Lagoon) & Praia do Bilene (beach), are dunes as high as mountains! Driving these dunes is a must when in Bilene! There are also many 4x4 tours which can be arranged. The setting is beyond anything you could imagine. Dunes as far as the eye can see.

We have observed that the heart of any coastal town is where the entrepreneurial spirit resides! These are the main streets of Bilene…
Colourful fabrics & carved wooden curios a fill the streets.
There’s no shortage of fresh produce & freshly baked pao (bread). We walked along the back streets of Bilene Town to find a locally prepared beef stew.
The entrepreneurs are welcoming, warm & wonderful! All you need for a comfortable stay in Bilene can be found in the town (ATMs, fuel, food & other essentials).
Things to do here:
1. Take a drive along the shores of the lagoon.
2. Marvel at the crystal clear fresh blue water.
3. Relax at one of the many beach bars.
4. Visit Flip Flop Bar for their world famous steak pregos.
World famous sunsets here in Bilene. We found our very own hidden sunset viewing point. A solitary sand bar on the shores of Lagoa Uembje. What a way to conclude this leg of our Mozambique trip.

The 27 km long lagoon with its beautiful beachfront is the ideal spot for family holidays, where you can participate in various water sport.
Self Drive Do it Yourself Mozambique:
The mouth of the lagoon, usually blocked by a massive sandbank, is best reached by boat, although a long difficult 4x4 track does allow you access to the beach and the open sea.
A qualified dive instructor with a fully equipped boat [s available for those who want to explore the magnificent reefs in the area either diving or snorkeling.
Deep-sea fishing in the area is also very popular and boats can be chartered at the resort.
Bilene is an excellent destination for all watersports enthusiasts especially those who want to ski, sail or just enjoy the beauty of the lagoon on a barge trip.

One of our favorite places on the planet so far, Santa Maria in Southern Mozambique is the first stop of our year long East Africa Safari. One of the things that make SM so special is the drive through the Maputo Special Reserve (formerly the Maputo Elephant Reserve). With endless vistas, wildlife, and a bit of thick sand thrown in the mix for some great 4x4 driving, it's a great adventure destination in itself. Add to this the stunning coastline protected by the inaccessibility and you have a rare spot on the map that is truly special.

#Mozambique is a seldom visited country that neighbours South Africa. Whilst South Africans frequent the country, it is little know internationally, which is a shame. The people are some of the nicest you will meet and the place is a #tropicalparadise.
This is just a small montage of our trip there, as we did not really film it to be a full edit. I hope it gives you a small glimpse and makes you want to experience it for yourself.

Mozambique Ep7 Ponta Membene - Ironvan Adventures with Wild Wonderful World
The team head out to Ponta Membene, in the Maputo Special Reserve and on the shore of the Ponta do Ouro Partial Marine Reserve, which features a great beach, very isolated and different from the more famous Ponta do Ouro beach. With camping as the only option, great ablutions, the Team from Ironman 4x4 and Michelle from Wild Wonderful World relax before they head off to explore Rustic campsite number 4 which is south of the main track, overlooking Lagos Ne’a, not far from Lahore Xinguti.
Grant & Michelle everything they do aims to inspire a love for Africa and wildlife, educate people on conservation and do their part to empower key projects with the funding and resources they need to keep our wild spaces thriving.

We camped at Ponta Malongane and took a drive about 20 Km down to Ponta Do Ouro and stopped and our favorite place's on the way and stopped and took some photos and made so many good friend along the way. This video ends in Ponta Do Ouro with a few photos taken their as well.

Emma Kleynhans, the_runawayblond as we know her on Instagram joins Dirk on a Mozambique excursion with the Ironvan. From snorkelling to the famous R&R drinks and unforgettable Mozambique sunsets.
In the 1st Episode, they start their journey at Kosi Bay, where they saw loggerhead turtles hatching and snorkelling in the Kosi bay mouth.
Then, went on a boat ride on the Kosi bay lake system.

Kosi Bay lies on the coast in the top northeast corner of KwaZulu-Natal and forms part of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park World Heritage Site.
The Kosi Bay system consists of four lakes connected by a series of meandering channels with fringing wetlands. It is one of the most fascinating and beautiful pristine lake systems on the African coast.
Kosi Bay Resort is located along the north-western shore of Lake Nhlange, the largest of the four lakes. The Kosi system is home to many birds and animals including hippos and crocodiles.
Humpback whales are seasonal offshore visitors, as are leatherback and loggerhead sea turtles that come ashore to nest on the beaches from November to January.

Better than Atlantis South Africa! Guys, this place is the best playground for boys with their toys. Bring the Side-by-sides, Quad bikes and 4X4 bakkies and have the time of your life. These dunes can get super hot, so bring the gazebo and spend the day here. There is enough space for everyone. Just be careful for the blind dunes in the middle of the day. There are no shops close by, so bring enough food and drinks. Stay responsible as the hospital is waaaaaay too far away. Best place to enjoy a 2M with the sunset!
