In 2012, London aimed to change that narrative, praised at the time by climate activists for paving the way for sustainable architecture. The documentary Before The Party is a critical comment on the preparations for the FIFA World Cup (2014) and Olympic Summer Games (2016) in Rio de Janeiro. 22% of the population lives in squatted and self-built neighbourhoods, the so-called favelas. How do the preparations for the mega sporting events shape the life in the favelas and the relations between poor and rich people? The film takes us to several favelas, such as Complexo do Alemao, Morro da Providência and Vila Autódromo.

While visiting the favela I decided to send up the drone. This turned out to be a nightmare. Kids were flying their fighting kites with razor sharp wire. The phantom would not stand a chance against these skilled kite flyers.

Tourists are encouraged to visit the favela and while everything seems to be safe, you can feel the tension as Police patrol the streets.
There is no truth in the fact that David Beckham purchased property in the slum. This has angered many locals who see foreigners forcing them out as house/shack prices are artificially inflated by landlords and selling agents.

Volunteering at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games has been one of the most surreal experiences of my life. What many of you don’t know is that I actually got THE call offering me a position when interrailing with my friends, so I had to ditch them when we got to Rome and my journey began from there.
I finally found the time to put together a little film highlighting some bits of my adventure, but it really doesn’t do it justice. Apologies that it's quite fragmented - I didn't intend on making one originally because I didn't want to spend my whole time in Brazil looking through a ⌜viewfinder⌟. It’s more a montage of what I do have, just to capture the pivotal experience in my life that I’ll always remember.
