Bangkok Travel Tips: 13 Things to Know Before You Go

Things YOU need to know before YOU go to Bangkok in Thailand.
Bangkok is the bustling capital of Thailand with a population of more than 11 million. About 13% of Thailand's population lives in Bangkok. Bangkok was the world’s top tourist destination with 20 Million Tourists in 2017. Bangkok is also known as the Big Mango.

2 - Weather

Hot and Humid! Really hot and humid! Like all the time!
Daytime highs all year are in excess of 30C/86F
Bangkok holds claim to being the hottest city in the world
Not because the highs are the highest, but because it doesn’t cool down at night
Lows range from 21C to 26C ( 70F-79F )

April to October is the wet & hot season

The “cool” and dry season is November to February, like a degree or 2 less on the highs and a few degrees cooler on the lows

3. Getting In

Chances are you’ll be flying in to Bangkok, yes there are buses, and yes there’s a train, and you can take it from Singapore, but most people fly.

2 Airports
Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) and Don Mueang Airport (DMK).
Most international flights go in to BKK

By Rail:
The Airport Rail Link connects Suvarnabhumi Airport with the BTS Skytrain system, which is Bangkok’s primary public transportation system. The City Line connects with the BTS Skytrain at Phayathai Station and costs 45 baht from Suvarnabhumi.

By Taxi:
Metered taxis are available from Suvarnabhumi Airport to Bangkok.

4. Getting Around

MRT Subway
Fare varies according to age

People don’t stand in lines. Instead of queuing up, Thais form a crowd. Stand your ground, and get used to a lack of personal space in public places.

Taxis
Notorious for ripping off tourists. Make sure they turn on the meter. It should start at 35 THB. Or download the GrabTaxi app -- like Uber, but cheaper.

Tuk Tuk
A small vehicle with no windows or doors but with a roof and a seat.
Price is always negotiated
Make sure to hold on the handles, tuk tuk drivers can be crazy drivers

Motorbike Taxis
Best to get through traffic
And come with a free massive heart attack!

5. Money
Thai Baht

1 Thai Baht was about $.03 US
Or 33 Baht to 1 USD

In Thailand, there are 1 baht, 2 baht, 5 baht, and 10 baht coins and 20 baht, 50 baht, 100 baht, and 1,000 baht notes. You may also occasionally see a 10 baht note, although those are no longer printed.

Get it from an ATM, but select “Continue Without Conversion”

6. What to wear

Linen, Rayon, or wicking/quickdry fabrics

DON’T WEAR JEANS -- you’ll combust! Also don’t wear anything lined with Polyester -- it’s as good as wearing a ziplock bag.

Temples and Palaces require you to cover your shoulders and knees.
pay attention to see if others have taken off their shoes. If so, follow suit.

7. Language
Big cities like Chiang Mai and Bangkok have a lot of locals who speak English

Sawadiikaa for females, and Sawadiikrap for males - This is the Thai greeting for hello and goodbye, and is accompanied by the wai gesture.
placing hands palms together at your chest and bowing your head
Also note that adding kaa or krap to any sentence in Thai makes the sentence more polite.
Kapkhunkaa for females, and Kapkhunkrap for males - This means thank you, and it is also often accompanied by the wai gesture.
Chuai buht meter dai mai kaa/krap? - Could you turn on the meter?
Gepdthang noi - Check please.
Mai ao - This verbatim means I'm not getting that, but can generally be used to deny an interest in purchasing anything.
Krungthep - This is the word for Bangkok in Thai. Many people mistakenly assume Bangkok is a Thai word. It's not, and knowing the real word can come in handy.

8. Shopping

9. Food

10. Bug Spray

11. Respect the King and the Royal Family

12. Don’t touch anyone on the head.

Bangkok, Thailand’s capital, is a large city known for ornate shrines and vibrant street life. The boat-filled Chao Phraya River feeds its network of canals, flowing past the Rattanakosin royal district, home to opulent Grand Palace and its sacred Wat Phra Kaew Temple. Nearby is Wat Pho Temple with an enormous reclining Buddha and, on the opposite shore, Wat Arun Temple with its steep steps and Khmer-style spire.

5 Places to visit in BANGKOK (Co van Kessel Guide)

5 Places to visit in Bangkok.

** JJ GREEN HAS CLOSED DOWN SINCE SEPTEMBER 2018! **

If you are planning your trip to Bangkok, you’ll probably hear the same things over and over again. The grand palace, reclining buddha and khao san road. Now we are not saying these places are bad, but we would just like to give you some alternatives.

Here is OUR list of places to visit in Bangkok.

1. Wat Prayoon
The adress is 24 Prajadhipok Rd, แขวง วัดกัลยาณ์ Khet Thon Buri, Krung Thep Maha Nakhon 10600.
You can easily reach it by the Chao Phraya River Express boat service by alighting at the Memorial Bridge pier and walking over the bridge across the river.
Wat Prayoon is open everyday and there is no entrance fee.

2. Saphan Taksin Park
The address is Soi Charoen Nakhon 13, the best way to get here, is to take the BTS or the Chao Phraya express boat to Saphan Taksin, and then walking across the bridge or by taking the local ferry boat.

3. Airplane Graveyard
Ramkhamhaeng Road | Hua Mak, Bang Kapi, Bangkok 10240,
The best way to get to the Airplane Graveyard is by Taxi.
*Pro tip: Use Grab Taxi, you can write the address in the APP, so there should be no confusion for the driver.
It is open from 9 am till 4pm.
The entrance fee depends on what the family wants you to pay it is normally around 200-400 baht.

4. JJ GREEN
เลขที่ 1 ถนนกำแพงเพชร 3, แขวงจตุจักร, Chatuchak, Bangkok 10900
1 Kamphaeng Phet 3, Chatuchak, Bangkok
You can get here by taxi, MRT: Chatuchak or BTS: Mo Chit
Open from thursdays until sundays, from 6 pm till 1.30 am.
JJ Green is located next to the Chatuchak weekend market, which closes around 5pm. So it's perfect to combine these 2 for a big day of shopping!

5. Co van Kessel
The address is: Charoen Krung soi 24.

Co van Kessel bike tours and boat tours provides a refreshing alternative to the tired tourist experience. We do not battle the crowds at clichéd destinations promoted in guide books, but turn your attention to quaint local communities and charming excursions into the fascinating lifestyle and culture of real Thai people. Every day is different and every tour is a surprise as we focus not on destinations, but lose ourselves in the enchantment of the journey itself.

Co van Kessel, an innovative and adventurous Dutchman, pioneered bicycle tours in Bangkok more than 30 years ago. As a longtime resident and self-professed lover of Bangkok, he understood very well the picture of accelerated urban development (gridlocked traffic, concrete towers, and choking pollution) that has plagued the recent image of the city. He also had a hunch that this was not what Bangkok or Thailand was all about.

Making it his goal to re-discover Bangkok, Co spent thousands of hours on his mountain bike exploring the vast network of local streets, alleyways, footpaths and canals between the main urban thoroughfares. What he found, lurking behind the facade of modernization, were hidden worlds of peace and tranquility, a picture of “real” Thai life that has remained unchanged for countless decades; an identity of a city that is true to the Thai people, yet largely unknown to outsiders.

Whether it’s the colorful sights and smells of the local markets, the fascinating life of locals along the canals, or the surprising existence of bountiful green belts, Co discovered the essence of what makes Bangkok one of Asia’s most captivating cities. Since then, it has been his mission to share these discoveries with the rest of the world.

What we do:

Our mission at Co van Kessel Bangkok Tours is to provide our guests with a singularly unique travel experience in Thailand. All our tours use Co’s extensive topographical knowledge of the greater Bangkok area as well as his keen eye for the interesting to take you where nobody else can or will.

We aim not to bore you with talk, but to immerse you in an experience where your individual fascinations emerge.

Bicycles, boats, and our feet become the tools we use to gain access to the previously inaccessible, behind-the-scenes lifestyle of the Thai. Here the roots of an ancient culture will become evident in a way you never could have imagined.

WHY I LOVE BANGKOK: Hidden Gems Beyond the Khaosan Road | Travel Guide

Bangkok in 2020 is more than just the Khoasan Road. This is a travel guide covering all of the must see sights and hidden gems that you can't miss on your trip.

Over the 8 months, I've been to Bangkok on 6 separate visits and this video is a culmination of all of my favourite things to do: Including the best floating market, best rooftop bars, the most epic malls, an amazing luxury hotel and the most unique hipster hangouts. I've tried to avoid the main famous sights and focus on some lesser known places.

EVERYTHING IN THIS VIDEO (INCLUDING PRICES):
Use the time codes to skip to any area you are interested in.

0:00 - Why I think Bangkok is underrated
Looking at why a lot of people leave Bangkok with a bad impression and why you should avoid the famous Khoa San Road.

01:15 - Khlom Lat Mayom Floating Market
For my money, this is the best floating market in the city. It is also one of the best places to try delicious locally cooked Thai food.

SALT BAKED FISH PRICE: 240 BAHT
$7.49 USD / £5.80

02:07 - Chao Phraya River Tour
Bangkok’s waterways are full of local life and nature. The best way to see them is by taking the boat trip from the pier at the Khlom Lat Mayom market. It includes a stop at a Lotus farm.

GROUP BOAT TOUR PRICE (per person): 100 BAHT
$3.12 USD / £2.42 GBP

PRIVATE BOAT TOUR PRICE (whole boat): 400 BAHT
$12.48 USD / £9.67 GBP

03:29 - Bangkok’s Affordable Luxury Hotels
Bangkok has a lot of cheap accommodation options, but this is a look at the highest of luxury. Which is expensive, but more affordable than you might think…

RESIDENTIAL SUITE AT THE MARRIOTT SURAWONGSE: 6000 BAHT
$187 USD / £144 GBP

04:37 - Chatuchak Weekend Market
The biggest and the best market in Bangkok. Full of anything you could possibly need from clothes, to homeware, to souvenirs.

05:14 - The Camp Flea Market
A hidden gem very close to the Chatuchak Market that is very underrated. A hipster hangout with coffee shops, bars and antique shops.

06:11 - Rooftop Bars
A look at the Yao Rooftop bar at the Marriot Surawongse and the famous Skybar.

06:52 - Icon Siam Mall
The newest luxury mall with lots of designer brands and shopping. There is also an amazing food court in the basement with really good food options.

08:09 - Wat Arun Temple
A famous riverside temple.

WAT ARUN ENTRANCE FEE: 50 BAHT
$1.56 USD / £1.21 GBP

08:43 - Golden Mount Temple (Wat Saket)
Another of my favourite temples of the city with some amazing city views.

WAT SAKET ENTRANCE FEE: 50 BAHT
$1.56 USD / £1.21 GBP

09:15 - Ari
Bangkok’s coolest neighbourhood. Away from the tourists but with easily accessible luxuries. There are some great Airbnb options (which is a touchy subject in Thailand, so do your research into the law before booking)

AIRBNB IN BANG SUE PER NIGHT: 827 BAHT
$25 USD / £20 GBP

BANGKOK, Thailand: things to do and to know | Tourism Thailand vlog 1

Bangkok, Thailand is the most visited city in the world, and in this series, I'll show you all about Bangkok: things to do, where to go, what you need to know, and even the scams in tourism. Thailand is a wonderful country, but you always need to be aware of prices and opening hours of the attractions before leaving the hotel. In this first video, you'll see Lumphini Park (or Lumpini), the beautiful Wat Saket temple (also known as Golden Mount/Golden Mountain), the Chao Phraya river and Icon Siam, a new and very unique mall.

► Here's the floating market video I mentioned in the vlog: (look at my baby face in my first trip to Thailand ????????)

The original video is in English, this is an automatic translation to help you watch in your own language. There are subtitles as well, you can activate them by typing C (desktop) or clicking the video, then at settings at the top of the screen (mobile).

This entire trip to Thailand was before the lockdown. Please note that, at the moment, Thailand is closed to international visitors. But this series will be a great guide for when you can travel to Thailand again.

► WHO AM I?

I am a Brazilian-American journalist living in Florida. After traveling the world working with sports, news, and events for over 15 years, I realized that what I really love is the travel part of it all. So I exchanged life in the newsrooms and stadiums for the daily challenge of being an independent content producer. I created this channel to share the beauties of the world... stuff that for so long I only kept to myself. Also to help people planning similar trips and to inspire more people to venture out and enjoy life!

P.S.: The funny guy who appears in the vlogs is my husband, Gordon. He is Canadian-American and he's actually camera-shy, that's why he's behind the camera most of the time ????

BANGKOK TRAVEL | AFFORDABLE HACKS TO MAXIMIZE YOUR TRAVEL | PLACES TO EXPLORE & EXPERIENCE

Here's the video of our trip in Bangkok. As soon as we got to the airport we approached a travel desk where we booked a temple tour for our second day in the city and they were also helpful in giving us options for a good sim to use during our stay. Among the choices were AIS, DTAC, and True Move H. From the airport you can also book a metered taxi, you just need to make sure that the address of the place where you'll stay is written in Thai to avoid misunderstanding.

We booked 'Express' Hostel through:

The hostel was situated in Sathorn, Bangkok. It's right beside 7-Eleven. And it's 5-minute walk from Surasak BTS Skytrain Station.

For temple tours, they are open from 8 am to 5 pm. Please take note that appropriate clothing must be observed. Sleeveless and shorts are not allowed especially for women.

Jim Thompson House is open from 9 am to 6 pm and they accept walk-in guests. The entrance fee of THB 200, includes a well accommodated tour with your guide narrating stories about the museum.

If you're interested to go on a dinner cruise, you can book it at least 2 days before your planned date. You can visit this site:

Click on the option 'Things To Do' and type in 'Chao Phraya' on the search engine.

Enjoy travelling guys! Keep loving life! Keep Shining!!! :)
