19 DIFFICULT LANDINGS AT MADEIRA AIRPORT INC. 3 GO AROUND
Windy day at Madeira Airport LPMA, also known as Cristiano Ronaldo Airport. I went in the morning to the airport just in time to watch 2 Easyjet Airbus's go around's, with successful landings on the second approach. On the afternoon was Thomas Cook with a go-around.
The wind was variable and sometimes the gusts were outside the airport limits, causing the go-around of the 3 planes.
We had the visit of 2 ATR, 12 Airbus and 5 Boeing planes, including a A320 NEO from TAP Air Portugal.

Very difficult morning at Madeira Airport, the wind was blowing hard and the heavy turbulence on runway 23 short final was giving extra work to the pilots. The first TAP land was his second attempt after a go-around.
Runway 23 is very famous for his bubble just after the threshold.

SUPER STEEP VERTICAL GO AROUND Wizzair A321N at Madeira Airport
Incredible super steep and almost vertical go around made by the Wizzair Airbus A321-271NX flying from Budapest! Such an excellent climb rate, I cannot imagine the passenger's feelings inside the airplane!!
He landed very smoothly on the second attempt

Fantastic Crosswind Landing at Madeira Airport. Storm Filomena was diverting planes to other airports and put many more on hold for the wind to be inside limits. The TAP Air Portugal Airbus A319 CS-TTS was inbound from Porto and was on hold until the ATC cleared the landing.
The crosswinds made the landing even more difficult, several pilots informed about windshear on final that made some planes to go around minutes later, but this TAP Captain managed very well all the conditions and landed safely on runway 05, after a nice battle with the wind!

Flying into Europe's Most Challenging Airport - Funchal, Madeira
I have been wanting to go to Funchal, Madeira airport in Portugal for a long time, as I have heard so much about the scary and challenging landing there. I flew on a TAP Air Portugal A319 from Lisbon to Madeira in the morning. The pilot explained why Funchal, Madeira is a difficult airport to land. The variable wind on the final approach and the draft from the mountain has created tough conditions for planes to land.
After landing in Madeira, I went planespotting with local plane spotters. There are a lot of amazing locations to spot planes arriving and departing. I also went underneath the runway pillars, where the runway has been extended.
The next day I flew back to Lisbon on a TAP Air Portugal A321neo, with Retro Livery. I met with first officer Patricia onboard and she shared with me her aviation story. Check out her landing into Lisbon. Find out more from the video.

Another Storm Filomena day at Madeira, probably the last one, with some planes diverting to other airports or waiting for the wind to be inside limits. Madeira Airport has wind limits for landings due to be a very specific airport.
In this video, you can watch the SATA Air Açores De Havilland Canada Dash 8-400 performing an awesome landing on runway 05, battling the wind and diving the nose of the plane on short final, a normal manoeuvre in turbo-props!
