Things Okay in Japan but Illegal Around the World

Use my code PAOLO15 at to get $15 off your first Bokksu Japanese snack box!

Shocking Laws okay in Japan, but illegal around the world. So I’ve made videos before on things you can’t do in Japan because of laws or unknown laws that could get you arrested, but in this video I wanted to switch things up a little and share with you some things that are legal in Japan but may be illegal in other parts of the world. Many think that Japan is a very strict country, but when you hear some of these Japanese laws you may be scratching your head. And to be clear from the start, I don’t recommend doing any of these things. I’m not providing legal advice and this is for entertainment only.

6 Most SURPRISING Things About Japanese Schools

In this video we talk about the 6 most surprising things about Japanese schools. We’ve been teaching in Japan for the last two years on the JET Programme, and have noticed some pretty surprising things about Japanese schools. All these strange (to us) aspects of schools in Japan are things that we see everyday in our JET Programme daily life. If you plan to come and teach in Japan on the JET Programme, this video covers some things you should know about Japanese schools. We’re specifically talking about elementary and junior high schools in Japan, and of course everything we say it’s just our opinions from our experiences! Personally, we think most of these aspects are great and really enjoy the Japanese school system, this video is just showing some aspects that we found surprising about Japanese schools compared to England. What are schools like in your country? Let us know in the comments!

33 Things That Surprise First-Time Visitors in Japan

Japan is one of my favorite countries to visit, but the first time I traveled to Japan I was shocked by many things in this land of the rising sun. Compared to the USA, Japan is a truly a foreign land with amazing vending machines, hi-tech toilets, massively crowded train stations, and super tiny hotel rooms. After you watch this video you’ll be prepared to embrace Japan’s culture, and not be as shocked by it!

1 - Toilets have a bidet function
2 - Taxi doors open automatically
3 - Vending machines everywhere and they are amazing!
4 - Vending Machines at restaurants
5 - Convenience stores and Drug stores everywhere
6 - Insane Prices
7 - Excessive Packing
8 - And their stores close really early
9 - And their ATMS close too
10 - Mostly cash based
11 - Where is the dinner plate?
12 - There is more to Japanese food than Sushi
13 - The drink size in Japan is tiny
14 - Plastic Chopsticks
15 - Drinking is a national sport
16 - Tipping
17 - Smoking in public is still a thing
18 - People sleep everywhere
19 - Hotel rooms are tiny
20- Pillows are hard
21- Swim caps for swimming pools
22- Toilet shoes
In traditional Japanese style hotels you will find slippers for the toilet. Sometimes at Japanese places of business. Definitely take off your shoes if you are entering someones home.

23- No towels in public bathrooms
every Japanese child is brought up to always have a handkerchief on them at all times

24- Crowded train stations
And yes… they really do push you on to the train. Prepare to have no personal space.
There’s a whole train etiquette… don’t talk on the train… don’t put your butt in peoples faces. Watch my video on how to ride trains in Tokyo.

25- Face Masks

26- Everybody is always dressed up
Men in business suits, women in high heels, all the time.

27- Everything is on time
Trains, planes, automobiles
Even hotel check-in (3pm)
Dinner reservation (6pm sharp)
Store opening times, closing times.

28- Lack of trash cans
There are very few public trash cans… you are expected to carry your trash with you and bring it back to your home/hotel. Find trash cans at convenience stores.

29 - Purses left to save seats

30 - Little Kids Walking to School by Themselves

31 - French maids on the street

32 - Japanglish

33 - How helpful the Japanese are to foreign tourists

Shocking Facts How Japanese Kids are Raised

Get 10% off (save up to $47!) your own authentic Japanese snack box from Bokksu using my link and code PAOLO10

Raising Japanese children can be quite different compared to the rest of the world. Different Japanese customs and Japanese traditions lend to a different way a Japanese baby or Japanese child is raised. As Japanese kids grow, they are typically taught empathy, how to care about Japanese group harmony and to think about others. As a Japanese baby, most of their time is spent with their Japanese mother and they grow up in the same bedroom. In fact, many Japanese don't leave the house until after they get married. Japanese children are also taught to ride public transportation like ride a Japanese train or ride a Japanese bus in the middle of Tokyo or any other large Japanese city. These are just some of the examples in the video of how shockingly Japanese are raised differently from the rest of the world. Let me know in the comments how it relates to your country.

12 Strange Things in South Korea That Surprise an Inexperienced Traveler

Before going to an unfamiliar country, you need to know about its culture. Especially if you are going to Asia where the society still follows certain traditions and has a hierarchical structure. One of these traditional countries is South Korea with its frightening characteristics and unusual taboos.

So before you fill your belly with kimchi and then hit up a BTS concert, you’ll need to get acquainted with some South Korean “no-no’s” first. Here's the list of bizarre cultural faux pas and downright illegal bans of South Korea so that you won’t spoil your trip to the land of morning freshness.

Music by Epidemic Sound

SUMMARY:
- Restaurant and café employees get paid really well, so tipping is seen as an incredibly rude gesture and a jab at their dignity.
- Holding the sticks vertically and sticking them vertically into rice are associated with death in South Korea because it resembles the incense sticks stuck in the sand at funerals.
- When visiting someone’s home in South Korea, it’s impolite to refuse refreshments and even more offensive if you don’t finish what’s been served.
- You might feel uneasy about the number 13, but a lot of countries in East Asia have the same attitude, only with the number 4.
- The age-old tradition of giving gifts to teachers for Teachers Day on May 15 was made illegal in South Korea back in September of 2016. The law prohibits teachers from receiving gifts from students or their parents.
- Many East Asian countries don’t like tattoos, and they’ve even managed to encode this into their laws. In South Korea, it’s illegal for tattoo artists to practice their work, and only licensed medical doctors are legally allowed to ink people.
- A lot of women there will stick to high necklines or wear layers under low-cut tops just to err on the side of caution. However, the attitude towards miniskirts is drastically different!
- It’s important to avoid looking directly into someone’s eyes if they’re older than you or they have a higher position (like your boss).
- If you’re out and about in the streets of Seoul (or anywhere in the country for that matter), never take photographs with strangers in the frame. It might land you a fine or a night spent at the police station.
- You might well be a rocket scientist, but in South Korea, you have to listen to your elders, especially if they’re rocket scientists, too. No, just kidding about that last part.
- You know it’s polite to cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze, but take extra precaution when it comes to blowing your nose in Korea.
- Now, this might come as a surprise given all the other things on this list, but talking about your #1 and #2 is totally normal in Korea! And I’m not just talking about between family, friends, or partners – even colleagues will go into great detail about their bodily functions!

We travel with a Microsoft Surface everywhere we go. I edit my videos on it & use it to backup my pictures and vides while we travel. It’s light and the best travel laptop on the market in my opinion.

We use Sony Alpha series cameras to film our videos. They are compact so you don’t look like a super tourist when you take great pictures and videos while you travel.

We use Manfrotto Tripods. They are compact, travel well, and honestly I would not use another tripod for my nice cameras.

Travel Plug that works in pretty much any country & has four USB ports. A must for any traveler.
