⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯
It’s amazing the things that surprise and shock you when you move to a new country. Often they’re very small things, but they reflect the fact that the culture is so very different to where you’re from. Below are the 10 different cultural shocks we cover in the video with links so you can jump to them.

1:42 Get ready to get up close and personal! Spaniards love physical contact… and don’t shy away from applying it liberally :)

4:04 Spaniards love a good eye-locked gaze. In this country you’ll often lock eyes with strangers, and they will hold your gaze. Something that for other cultures can be a little uncomfortable at first.

5:22 When at home its slippers on… or else. When I first moved here Yoly’s family thought I was insane for going barefoot at home. And so my introduction to constantly wearing slippers began!

7:08 In Spain our tolerance for noise is world-class. This is one noisy country - and the locals thrive on the energy created by all the noise!

9:28 Kids hang out in bars. Yep… you will see a lot of kids in bars in this country. We explain why!

11:51 Traditional bars often forget to restock the soap or the toilet paper.

12:31 If you don’t have exact change, you may be in trouble. Yes, if you’re walking around with a 100 euro note… you may not be able to use it!

14:23 We love to live in Spain in the moment in Spain! Yes, this is a country is all about spontaneity so I’ve gotten in trouble in the past for planning too much!

16:24 In this country people peel fruit that shouldn’t be peeled! Yes, people peel apples. We dive into why!

18:03 There is actually a test for pregnant women to see if they can eat jamón!!

Did we miss any? What cultural shocks have you experienced visiting or moving to Spain?

⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯
The longer you live in a place, you start to take on certain traits that are unique to that place. And so I decided it was time to see what Spanish habits I’m starting to take on. Here’s the list!

#1: I love a good bocadillo de patata
When I first arrived, the bocadillo de tortilla de patatas (Spanish omelette sandwich seemed crazy to me - potato and bread)! But now I’ve learned to love it, especially when the tortilla is nice and gooey.

#2. I love polvorones
These are very dry little cakes that we eat at Christmas. When I first got here, I could handle them. So dry! But then one day I fell in love. And now I’m sold. I even went through a phase of eating them for breakfast!

#3. I crave seasonal Spanish dishes
When winter rolls around, I start to crave a big cocido. It’s such a wonderful winter stew. And eating it with friends and family is an event. And then once the weather starts to warm up for summer, I’m hanging out for that first sip of horchata!

#4. I crave casqueria (offal)
This one took a while, but one day I just realised that I needed a plate of callos (cow stomach). It was cold, and I wanted that delicious, meaty flavour and a big, bold glass of red.

#5. I love a post-lunch walk
After a big lunch in a village, we love a good walk here in Spain. It’s practically a ritual. And now it’s something I really look forward to after we’ve had the gin and tonic or a post-meal cup of coffee.

#6. I love the intimacy of a crowd
I stole this term from the book Madrid: A Cultural and Literary Companion by Elizabeth Nash. She writes how people in Spain love the intensity that being in a crowd provides. I love stepping into a heaving tapas bar and there being people all around me, and no room to move!

Here is the link to the book I mention:

#7. I’m less of a ‘pesado’
When I first arrived I would ask questions that didn’t have answers. Things like, “When will the party finish?” “How long do you think this coffee with a friend will take?” or “What are your opening hours in the summer?” Crazy!

#8. I’m becoming disillusioned with politics
After 8 years living in a country with a lot of corruption and dysfunctional politics, I’ve learned to be a little more cynical… sadly!

#9. I love the dry landscape of Castilla
It’s pretty dry around Madrid - often quite brown and a little treeless. But I’ve learned to find beauty in the simplicity of the landscape.

#10. Spanish is slipping into my English
Lots of Spanish words are slipping into my speech when I’m speaking English. Pesado, lio, tramites, gestor, factura… Because these words have so many cultural connotations!

#11. I enjoy Spanish swear words
There’s nothing quite as satisfying as a good swear. And finally, I’m feeling satisfaction is saying Spanish swear words, j0der!

EXPLORING A MASSIVE SPANISH SUPERMARKET! ????
⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯
I always think it's really interesting visiting supermarkets in new countries. It gives you a real insight into the local diet, and the local culture. So Yoly and I decided to dive into the massive supermarket in the outskirts of Madrid to give you guys an insight into what's there. We check out Spanish potato chips, the massive selection of jamón, lots of interesting meats (blood sausage, rabbit, pigs' brains and snout and more), cheeses, more cured meats and so much more.

But beyond that, we also dove into the frozen food section to see what we could find (yes, we found frozen paella in Spain!). And we also explored the enormous olive oil section, with everything from normal olive oil, right through to extra virgin olive oil (which is pretty cheap in Spain!).

MORE ABOUT THIS VIDEO ????
⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯
You have to visit a Spanish traditional food market next time you’re in Spain. Noisy, busy, full of wonderful smells and overflowing with people - they’re a feast for all the sense. I love my local market (the Mercado de Antón Martín - featured in this video). Ham, cheese, wine, olive oil, saffron, paprika, bread, meat, fruit and vegetables - these places are gastronomic wonderlands. But they’re also fabulous cultural places - every Spanish market has at least a few bars, and they’re always a fun place to hang out for a drink after you’ve finished your shopping.

So here is what I suggest. If you’re living or staying in Spain, give the supermarkets are miss (unless you need canned goods or cleaning products) and for all your fresh produce needs, head to the nearest local market. They’re the best place to stock up your apartment if you’re staying in an AirBnB or simply to grab some delicious stables for a picnic in the park. An important thing to remember is that if you want to try Spain’s incredible wines, hams and cheeses - they’ll be much cheaper in the market than in a tapas bar. And do make the perfect picnic hamper fillers.

In this video I explore the Antón Martín market, which is nearby my office (it’s where I shop after work). I hit the Jamón booth, a fabulous cheese stall, the fruit stand, an olive stand, an offal stand, a place for olive oil, paprika and saffron, as well as a chicken shop and an excellent bakery. Along the way you’ll get tips and tricks for tackling your local market on your own!

Do Spaniards drink sangria? Are churros for dessert? Where can I get a good paella (only in Valencia?)? Great questions! When tourists hit Spain, they want to eat! And damn right, too! BUT there is so much misunderstanding about how, when and what we REALLY eat in this country. Which is why I made this video in Madrid – to help prevent Spain-bound travellers from falling into typical tourist gastro-mistakes. Watch, learn and drool!

Recently Yoly and I made a video about things you MUST NOT do in Spain. And it was really popular, as well as a little controversial.

So we decided to follow it up with something more positive - the things you have MUST DO in Spain if you want to have a truly local and authentic experience.

11. Read a great book before you come!
Before I moved to Spain, reading really helped me get a grip on this country and in the end have a much more local experience.

▶ BUY 'GHOSTS OF SPAIN' HERE:
▶ BUY 'DON QUIXOTE' HERE:

10. People watch during the evening paseo!
People watching is a real cliche, but it can be an amazing way to discover a place. So how do you do it right in Spain?

9. Explore the neighbourhoods as well!
Don't just limit yourself to the historic centre - hit the barrios where the locals are and see that side of life!

▶ Check out this video of a tapas crawl in our Madrid neighbourhood:

8. Explore lesser-known parts of Spain!
Of course you want to visit Barcelona, Seville, Madrid etc. But why not hit the rural areas? Or lesser know regions?

▶ In this video Yoly and I head to the beautiful rural Jerte Valley

7. Eat a menú del día in an old man bar!
These bars are full of locals who are going about their busy day and stop to eat a big lunch. Such an amazing way to get a glimpse at everyday life in Spain.

6. Make time for a lengthy 'sobremesa'!
Once you've finished lunch, be sure to make time to chill out with a huge gin and tonic!

5. Drink local wine!
Don't just still to Rioja and Ribera del Duero - make sure you check out local wines too.

▶ In this video Yoly and I head to rural Granada and drink local wine:

▶ My video to help you understand Spain's famous Rioja wine:

▶ My video to help you understand Spain's other famous wine region - Ribera del Duero:

4. Eat paella like a local!
First you want to make sure you eat non-frozen paella. But then, you also want to eat it WHEN the locals eat it.

▶ My video about Spanish food myths (incl. paella info!):

3. See an AMAZING flamenco show!
I'm not really into dance... but flamenco is so much more than that. And I adore it!

▶ My wife Yoly is a passionate flamenco expert and leads incredible private flamenco experiences. Check them out here:

2. Eat Spanish delicacies that scare you!
I'm talking blood sausage, sweetbreads and pigs ears. Get into it - it's the local food!

1. Talk to a stranger in a bar (or somewhere else)!
In Spain we very easily and quickly strike up conversations with strangers. So even if you don't have much Spanish, go for it!

I remember about two years ago when I was giving a tapas tour in Madrid for my company Devour Spain, and in the first bar one of my guests said to me, “Are we in a tapas bar now?” Boom! That’s when I realised that although tapas have gone global, people who are visiting Spain for the first (and second) time often have no clear idea of what it really means to go out for tapas in this country. Or actually what tapas actually are.

And I don’t blame them. It’s flat out confusing. So, I made this video to try and explain what – after four years in Spain – I think tapas are. And to give you my three hard-won tips for going out for tapas like a local. Watch, learn and drool!

I know many people are curious about paella. What is a real paella? What ingredients go in it? How do you cook it? In this video we make a real paella valenciana in on our patio, and answer some of those questions. Here are some things you need to know!

- A real paella valenciana is a dish that originated in the Spanish region of Valencia (where rice has been grown a long time)
- A real paella valenciana never has chorizo and never has a mix of seafood and meat
- The minimum ingredients for a real paella valenciana include garrofó (you can also use lima beans or butter beans), green beans, saffron, garlic, tomato, paprika, chicken
- Why is a paella sometimes disappointing in a restaurant? Because the true paella experience is like a BBQ - it's about being outside, cooking with friends. BBQ never quite tastes the same if you haven't prepared it yourself. So that's why the restaurant experience can be disappointing!
- If you want to get a paella pan outdoor paella kit or the right ingredients, check out La Tienda (they deliver in the US):

MORE ABOUT THIS VIDEO ????
⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯
Seville is one of the most amazing places in Spain to eat tapas. It has a fantastic mix of old school, traditional tapas bars, and modern, new tapas bars. It’s the capital of Andalusia and where the tapas tradition truly began. But if you want to get away from the tourist centre, and hit some very local and atmospheric tapas bars that are filled with locals and serve delicious food - then you need to head to Triana. It’s just over the Guadalquivir River and is a neighbourhood that has always had a very strong sense of identity. Locals say, I’m not from Seville, I’m from Triana!

In this video I head to five super local tapas bars in the Triana neighbourhood. We try everything from jamón to shrimp to pork cheek to tortilla. And we drinks wines, vermouth and sherry. I’m joined by some of my Devour Tours colleagues on the journey.

So, if you want to have a truly local tapas experience in a real Sevilla neighbourhood, I suggest checking out these five places.

????We head to Bar Santa Ana, Cervecería La Granda, Las Golondrinas, Casa Cuesta, La Antigua Abacería.????

MORE INFO ABOUT THIS VIDEO ????
⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to life in a magical Spanish village? Well, this video is all about Spanish food, Spanish village life, and Spanish culture. Thanks to Laura & Esme of Esmetours (esmetours.com), over the course of a weekend we roast a baby goat in a traditional oven, we eat rice with rabbit and quail, we explore the beautiful stone houses and we even get to hear Spanish bagpipes! All in a gorgeous, dreamlike village called Pozos.

I was invited to Pozos by Laura & Esme of Esme Tours who run gastronomic retreats (including Spanish cooking classes) in a village in the northern Spanish province of Leon. So if you're planning to travel to Spain anytime soon, definitely check out their experiences at esmetours.com and follow them on Instagram at @esmetours!

Also in this video are my friends and co-founders in Devour Tours Lauren Aloise (Spain blogger at @spanishsabores) and Alejandro Cabrera. They recently bought an old stone house in the village and they're going to do it up. So we explore their ruin as well!
