7. Glenwood Power Plant
Looking creepy enough to be used as a filming location for horror movies, this power plant has been abandoned since its closure in 1963. The plant was built to provide electricity for the New York Central Railroad tracks and became operational in 1906. The structure was abandoned for 50 years and today is littered with graffiti and almost completely empty. Recently the Goren Group started a project to convert the building into an arts-focused events complex that will include a hotel, restaurants, and a marina.

6. Oradour-sur-Glane
Technically this village was never abandoned. The inhabitants of the town were slaughtered on June 10, 1944, when a Nazi company massacred 642 of its residents, including 247 women and 205 children. French president Charles de Gaulle ordered the village to be maintained in its original state as a permanent memorial and historical site after the war. Today the village endures as a popular tourist site, with many people claiming to see ghostly figures roaming the vacant streets late at night.

5. Florida Dome Homes
Once upon a time, these dome homes were the self-sustaining, state of the art dwellings of an oil tycoon. Today they lie abandoned and run down, a mere shell of their former greatness. Oil producer Bob Lee built the futuristic homes as a vacation spot on Cape Romano for his family in the 1980’s. The problem with Florida beachfront property is that it can be susceptible to hurricanes, which often plague the area. The Dome Homes were severely damaged several times and after requests to build a seawall were denied the property was ultimately abandoned.

4. Port Arthur
Said to be one of the most haunted places in Australia, Port Arthur in Tasmania has seen plenty of tragedy and death in its time. The port was a penal colony in the mid-1800’s and was home to some of the hardest British criminals and had some of the strictest security measures in the British penal system. Much like Alcatraz Island, it was often billed as an inescapable prison. In 1996 28-year-old Martin Bryant went on a killing spree in the small town in which 35 people died, making it the worst mass murder in the country's post-colonial history. This event led to a severe crackdown on firearms throughout the nation in which 640,000 weapons were turned into authorities.

3. The Bhangarh Fort
Often dubbed the most haunted place in India, this 17th-century fort is completely ruined today. There are many myths about the place that have added to its haunted reputation. According to legend, a wizard is said to have cursed the fort and everyone in it after being rejected by a princess with whom he had fallen in love. The curse endures to this day and there are plenty of people who have reportedly had contact with ghosts or felt evil spirits when visiting the area.

2. Willard Asylum
This hospital opened in 1869 as Willard Asylum for the Chronic Insane in New York. The first patient was a woman named Mary Rote, who had spent the previous 10 years of her life chained up in a room. The asylum helped improve her condition and by 1890 the hospital had over 2000 patients. By this time the location had become completely self-sufficient. Patients grew their own food and tended to their own medical needs. There were even a morgue, a cemetery and a bowling alley on site. A huge push for deinstitutionalization occurred throughout the country in the 1990’s, leading to the asylum’s closure in 1995. Over half of the 50,000 or so patients who called Willard Asylum, their home also died there. Since the asylum closed its doors it has become widely recognized as a haunted location.

1. Pripyat
The infamous Chernobyl disaster of 1986 left an entire city which once had a population of nearly 50,000 completely abandoned. Thanks to the high amounts of radiation that escaped during the terrifying event the land is sure to remain untouched for hundreds of years. Chernobyl was the worst nuclear accident in history. While two human deaths occurred during the actual event, hundreds of thousands of people and animals in the area are thought to have been affected detrimentally by the high amounts of radiation exposure that the accident caused.

7. Tyneham Village
This ghost town in the United Kingdom is one of the more eerie ghost towns that you’re actually allowed to visit. Located on the English Channel, just west of Portsmouth, residents were forced to leave their homes so allied troops could train for the invasion of Normandy nearly 70 years ago. The residents believed that they could return to their homes once the training was over but they never did. It was deemed that the land was too strategic to the military and the town remains abandoned. It’s now the largest army training ground in the UK. visitors are allowed to come on certain days of the year but the Ministry of Defense can withdraw access with short notice.

6. Burk’s Fall Ontario
A Canadian artist by the name of Peter Camani had a disturbing idea of building what he described as a “forest”. But instead of trees, he used 18 foot tall cement screaming heads! Sounds peaceful right? He intends this location for people to dump the ashes of their loved ones but it’s really turned into a local tourist attraction that people want to check out for their own. In this photograph, from the angle it was taken, you can tell that hands were also constructed and seem to go with the screaming heads.

5. The Witches Market
Located in one of Bolivia’s two capitals, you’ll find a creepy tourist attraction that will cater to all your spooky witchcraft potions and needs. Whether you need some dried frogs, or llama fetuses, this lively market will have what you're looking for. Other merchandise includes potions, strange statues, good luck charms. Threads of llama fur get wrapped around the statues for added good luck.

4. The Mutter Museum
If you’re into strange medical mysteries and oddities, the mutter museum might be right up your alley. This probably one of the strangest places you may ever go! Here you might find random things like jars filled with peeled off human skin, hippopotamus fat from South Africa, a book bound in human skin and all sorts of horrific things that will give you nightmares! Don’t forget about the slices of Einstein’s brain on display that were taken without permission! They also house a large inventory of skulls that were used to see if the craniums hold anatomical differences vary from different races around the world. If you’re not slightly creeped out by this place, there’s something wrong with you.

3. Capuchin Crypt
We might have mentioned this in a previous video, but it’s truly hard to get over the creepiness of the Capuchin Crypts located in Rome, Italy. This is also an ossuary and made up of the bones of several thousand Capuchin monks. They’re commonly arranged in into artsy ensembles, covering the walls and ceilings. This definitely seems like a place you don’t want to stay the night! Like you see in this photo, you can see them dressed up in robes with traditional brown robes! There’s about 5 or 6 themed rooms with bones creating furniture and ironically, even tombs like you see in this photo. Photography isn’t allowed but certainly seems like it’s worth a trip!

2. Odessa Catacombs
There might be a lot of catacombs out there in Europe, but something just seems a tad more eerie about the ones in Odessa after doing research. Originally built as a limestone mine like you can tell from this photo, it’s supposed to be closed to the public, but people still find away into this forbidden zone. The catacombs in Odessa, Ukraine have a massive tunnel system that stretches out to be 1500 miles under this slavic beach town. That’s longer than San Diego to Seattle! And it’s not just from the bones you might find there, but the shady things going on, as well as its haunting history. It’s supposedly here where executions of Nazi soldiers took place and also acted as a soviet hideout. In modern times, it’s been the location of homicides, illegal mushroom cultivators and bootleg winemakers. Recently a woman explored these tunnels and never came back Rumors of treasure being here as made urban explorers. Enter if you dare.

1.Villisca Axe Murder House
Believing that people would actually make a tourist attraction where gruesome murders took place seems beyond ridiculous and disrespectful. An entire family of 6 met their untimely end here in 1912 and the mystery was never solved who was responsible. Some are bothered by the fact that ghost hunters and tourists are allowed to stay the night here but this might not seem to be the best bed and breakfast place to stay at. It’s reportedly haunted by the victims and one ghost hunter actually became possessed and stabbed himself in 2014 during a routine investigation. There were no indications of foul play, the ghost hunter had no reported mental health issues and the wounds were self inflicted

13 Creepy Abandoned Hotels Around the World
1. Grossinger's Catskill Resort - New York
Grossinger's Catskill Resort was said to have been the inspiration for the setting of the film Dirty Dancing, but the waltzes here have long been over.
There's nothing but eerie silence now in this hotel, which once welcomed 150,000 visitors annually and was abandoned in 1986, according to Business Insider.
The hotel, part of the so-called Borscht Belt location of summer resorts in the Catskill Mountains, was famed for being the first place to use artificial snow for skiers in 1952, the Daily Mail reported.
2. The Grand Hotel - Kupari, Croatia
Located in Croatia's Dubrovnik Riviera, the village of Kupari was once an idyllic summer getaway for the high-ranking military officers of the Yugoslav People's Army.
Today, the tourist complex lay in ruins, shell-scarred from attacks during the Croatian War of Independence in the early 1990s.
Photographer Ben Fredericson captured the images of the ruins of the hotel, now covered in graffiti and crumbling in disrepair, in the slideshow above.
3. Hotel Belvédère du Rayon Vert - Cerbère, France
Designed in the art deco style by the Perpignan architect, Léon Baille, and built between 1928 and 1932, the Hotel Belvédère du Rayon Vert in the French Mediterranean stands out from its surroundings with its imposing and luxurious ship-like appearance.
Closed during the Spanish Civil War, the hotel has never regained its former glory, according to the Telegraph.
4. The White Pines - Poconos Mountains, Pennsylvania
Photographer John Walker captured haunting images of an abandoned resort, located on 750 acres of land at the base of the Pocono Mountains in Pa., after a fellow urban explorer disclosed the location.
The resort was formerly a summer haven for garment workers in the early 1900s, according to Abandoned NY.
It featured a lake, a theater, a library and an abundance of activities to keep guests entertained.
Now, the front desk, bar and theater at the resort all lie crumbling and derelict. The theater and main building interested me the most, Walker told us.
5. Polissya Hotel - Pripyat, Ukraine
Once the home of 50,000 people, Pripyat was evacuated on April 26, 1986 after an explosion at Chernobyl nuclear power plant caused a radiation leak.
Pripyat shows no visible effects of the nuclear disaster, but the decaying city is still eerie.
Tourists head to the ghost town every year to witness the crumbling buildings, including the Polissya hotel, one of the city's tallest buildings, built in the mid-1970s to house delegations and guests visiting the Chernobyl Power Plant, according to Pripyat.com.
6. Sanzhi UFO Houses - Taiwan
The UFO houses of Sanzhi, named for their odd shape, were abandoned just a few years after their construction.
The owner went bankrupt before completing the houses, which were meant to be a tourist destination and vacation resort on the coast.
7. Ryugyong Hotel - Pyongyang, North Korea
A 105-story pyramid-shaped skyscraper in Pyongyang, North Korea, the Ryugyong Hotel reaches a height of 1,080 feet, making it the most prominent feature of the city's skyline.
Construction for the hotel actually began in 1987, and was scheduled to be completed by 1989.
8. Unfinished Hotel Complex - Cala d'en Serra, Ibiza, Spain
Located on the beach of Cala d'en Serra in the Spanish island of Ibiza, the abandoned, half-finished hotel complex by renowned Catalan architect Josep Lluís Sert, show no signs of the nightlife or party atmosphere that the rest of the island is known for.
The project, which started in 1969, was put on hold in the 1970s and abandoned completely after Sert's death in 1983 according to the Ibiza blog IbizaPhoto.
9. Courbefy Hotel - Courbefy, France
In 2012, Courbefy in central France made news when the entire village was successfully auctioned off for 520,000 euros (around $663,000 at the time) to a Korean-American photographer.
11. Maya Hotel - Japan
Perhaps the most popular haikyo (abandoned place) spot in Japan, the Mt. Maya Hotel was built in 1929, and housed anti-aircraft guns on the roof and suffered damage during World War II, according to Forbes.
12. Unnamed Hotel - Cap Skirring, Senegal
With its white beaches and mangrove forests, Cap Skirring in Senegal's Atlantic Coast would make a perfect summer getaway.
13. Abandoned Hotels of Bad Gastein, Austria
Known for its spas, thermal waters and a picturesque waterfall, the resort town of Bad Gastein in the Austrian Alps was once a booming alpine getaway, situated in a high valley of the Hohe Tauern mountain range.

Step Inside Any Of These 52 Abandoned Places If You Dare They’re Beautiful And Scary

These places are incredible! Well maybe not so much the satanic worship room in Virginia but the rest are pretty awesome. I would be a little hesitant to enter some but others I feel like I could get lost in forever. I would love to travel the world and seek out abandoned places for a living. Can you imagine the things you would see and the stories you would unravel? Talk about a dream job!
