13 Hours Hiking Up Himalaya Alone????????

■ NEPAL, HIMALAYA: With Snickers, Chow Mein and Gongo aboard, I was ready to once again soldier up the Himalayan mountainside. But for how long? And to where? I had no real end goal in sight. If I found a nice lodge I'd simply set up shop for the night. If not, I'd just keep hiking up.

And hike I did as the hours flew by. As I kept climbing, the scenery kept changing fueling my thirst for further exploration. The spectacular Himalayan Lord of the Ringsesque forests, rivers, cliffs, wild deers and ruins of old abandoned settlements had me so intrigued, I wanted to see what's around the next corner, regardless of how much my legs told me they wanted no further part in this trek.

Already at 7:00AM, just two hours after leaving Bamboo Lodge, I had been so exhausted, thoughts of setting up shop at the first lodge possible had started creeping in. Somehow I had kept going. But now as the clock turned to 04:30PM, after nearly 12 hours of hiking uphill, fatigue started getting the better of me .....

Trekking Himalaya at Night ????????

■ NEPAL, HIMALAYA: At 4:45AM my alarm kicked off and 20 minutes later I was on my way up the Himalayas in total darkness. Bears, snow leopards, blackface Trudeau monkeys and a host of other potentially dangerous wild animals roam these lands but with the exception of the bears, whom are in hibernation at this time a year, the others are not to fond of people and should pose no problem what so ever as long as I don't venture far of course into the wilderness.

In total darkness, only seeing whatever my headlight pointed at... I kept trekking uphill for what was going to be the greatest endurance and strength test of my entire life.

■ LIKES NEWS: I truly appreciate everyone who helped me make the previous video the most liked video I put out in 2021. With the like/dislike ratio now being invisible to viewers, an above average number of likes relative to the view count, is now what counts to make a video succeed. A lot of firsts for me on this one. It was my first international trip and man was it an experience. I met up with a stranger from instagram and hiked to 5,364m //17,598ft to reach the base of the tallest mountain in the world. We experienced heat, sunburns, rain and snow. We went without a shower for 10 days and no running water for part of it. I fought altitude sickness and still managed to come home with khumbu cough and a stomach virus. Enjoy the struggle, and I'll see ya in the comments.

My dog and I are based in British Columbia, Canada and spend the weekends solo adventuring, exploring mountains, camping and paddling. New videos every week.

A Flight to Mount Everest + World’s Most Dangerous Airport - Lukla

Our helicopter was one of the first to take off at sunrise around 6:20am from Kathmandu Airport. There are many helicopter operators offering tours to see the majestic mountains in Nepal but there’s only a small window of season to do this. I’d recommend going in April or October when the weather is at its clearest and not so cold.

Lukla is the gateway to Mount Everest. There is no road so no car can get there. A flight to Lukla is 25 minutes on a fixed-wing airplane or 40 mins by helicopter. We arrived there at 7am.

We took off again after refueling and headed to Mt Everest, on the way we passed Namche Bazar, Syangboche airstrip, Khumbu Icefall…

Mount Everest is the one with the sharp peak with snow blowing at the top. We were almost at 20,000 ft but Mt Everest stood really tall from where our helicopter was. We were trying to get up to Camp 2 of Mt Everest which is the absolute limit of the helicopter.

We eventually landed at Kala Patthar. I was so frantically taking photos and videos and started to use the oxygen supply from the helicopter. Our next stop is the pristine Gokyo Lake. On the way, we saw the world’s highest glacier, Khumbu Glacier. It really amazes me how close we fly to those mountain terrains. After a brief stop on the lake, we headed towards the world’s highest hotel, hotel Everest view for breakfast.

The whole trip took about 5 hours. The cost of doing it is about $1200 per person sharing on the helicopter. Helicopters don’t just bring tourists, they also bring cargo and bring down sick and fatigue trekkers from the mountain down on a daily basis.

Way Point of our helicopter flight:

1. Kathmandu (4,390 ft / 1,338m)
2. Lukla (9,380 ft / 2,860m)
3. Namche Bazar (11,290 ft / 3,440m)
4. Syangboche (12,402 ft / 3,780m)
5. Khumbu Icefall (17,999 ft / 5,486m)
6. Mt Everest (29,031 ft / 8,849m)
7. Kala Patthar (18,519 ft / 5,644m)
8. Cho La Pass (17,782 ft / 5,420 m)
9. Gokyo Ri (17,575 ft / 5,357m)
11. Hotel Everest View (12,729ft / 3,880m)
13. Lukla (9,380 ft / 2,860m)
14. Kathmandu (4,390 ft / 1,338m)

► ABOUT THIS HIKE
In March-April 2023, I hiked the Three Passes Trek in Nepal in 16 days. During the trek, I was accompanied by a guide and porter from Himalayan Glacier. I flew from Kathmandu to Lukla (2,860m / 9,383ft) and spent the night in Phakding (2,610m / 8,563ft) before continuing on to Namche Bazaar (3,440m / 11,286ft) the following day. After an acclimatization day in Namche, I hiked to the Tengboche Monastery (3,870m / 12,697ft) where I camped for the night. The next day, I hiked to Dingboche (4,360m / 14,304ft) where I experienced snowfall overnight. The day after that, I did an acclimatization hike to Nangkartshang peak (5,083m, 16,676ft).
The following day, which happened to be my birthday, I hiked to Chukhung (4,730m / 15,518ft) and did another acclimatization hike to Chukhung Ri (5,559m, 18,238ft). The next morning, we crossed the first pass, Kongma La Pass (5,535m / 18,159ft), crossed the Khumbu Glacier (the highest glacier in the world), and spent the night in Lobuche (4,940m / 16,207ft).
On day 9, I hiked to Gorak Shep (5,140m / 16,863ft), the highest official overnight stop on the trek, and then did a day hike to Everest Base Camp (5,364m / 17,598ft). The next day, I climbed Kalapatthar (5,644m / 18,519ft) at sunrise, and then got to Dzongla for the night (4,710m / 15,453ft). On day 11, we crossed over the second pass, Cho La Pass (5,420m / 17,782ft), to get to Gokyo (4,790m / 15,719ft), which involved crossing the Ngozumpa Glacier, the longest glacier in the Himalayas at 36km / 22mi. I spent the night at Fitzroy Inn overlooking Gokyo Third Lake (Gokyo Lake). The next day, I hiked up to Gokyo Ri (5,357m / 17,575ft), where I camped for the night overlooking four 8,000m+ peaks, including Mount Everest. My highest night ever!
From Gokyo I passed over the third and final pass another night later: Renjo La Pass (5,360m / 17,585ft). Descending down into the valley we made it to the small town of Marlung (4,210m / 13,812ft). On day 15 we got back to Namche Bazaar, spent the night and hiked back to Lukla for the final night on trail.

Himalaya Gongo Hotel ????????

■ NEPAL, HIMALAYA: Ever since I'd ran into an Indian trekker coming back down along the Langtang river on my first day of this Himalayan excursion, I've had one thing on my mind: get to Tibet Guesthouse at Lama Hotel rest-stop and try their Gongo (or Roksi as it's called in Nepal).

I always like to sample locally made brews when I'm in a new country and according to this Indian who had just spent the previous night at Tibet Hotel, the owner there had made the best Gongo he'd ever had in his entire life.

In fact, and I quote: He has brewed it to perfection!, he said.

That's why I set out from Bamboo Lodge so early in the morning without even eating anything other than a granola bar. I wanted to get to Tibet Guesthouse as soon as possible to start the day like any real man should: with a fresh shot of Gongo!

What I didn't expect though was to run into the coolest and nicest couple I met on my whole Himalayan trekking adventure. A couple that started the very first lodge at the Hotel Lama location over 40 years ago and are still running that same guesthouse today.

■ Now before you watch, or after for that matter, I'd like to comment on what you see in the very beginning here, which I actually fully understand given the hard times hotel and guesthouse operators face, but still rubs me the wrong way. As I'm walking into this area here called Lama hotel I already knew where I was going: Tibet Guesthouse.

Every-time I entered a cluster of guesthouses like this, the people who run the first hotels and restaurants will of course be outside trying their best get you to stop at theirs. In this case however I knew where I was going and clearly stated I was going to Tibet Guesthouse, although I didn't know exactly which building that was.

Instead of simply pointing it out for me, they answer evasively on all my questions and instead say something along the lines of why don't I stop at their hotel instead.

Normally I am fairly good and ignoring such people but in this case I was so obsessed with hunting for Gongo that they nearly got the better of me. Especially when I saw that big barrel of I almost set up shop there and as you can see for the next 5 minutes even after getting away, seriously pondered going back to eat at said hotel.

Luckily I came to my senses and both drank and ate at Tibet Guesthouse which was the original plan. My point is when someone already know where they're going I wish they'd simply say sure... that's the hotel you see 3 buildings down there on the right; enjoy!

Tibetan Village Himalaya ????????

■ HIMALAYA, MUNDU: The village of Mundu, although situated in Nepal, is culturally, linguistically and architecturally Tibetan. The people who live here, although Nepalese by citizenship, are Tibetan by heritage, language and culture.

Their ancestors were nomadic and moved about in the Himalayan mountain range with their livestock looking for grazing fields and fertile soil. With the Chinese conquest of their lands, Nepal, unlike some other neighboring countries have magnanimously given them citizenship.

They describe themselves as both Tibetans and Nepalese though and speak both languages. They continue to be a mountain dwelling people at heart and whenever I asked anyone about moving to a warmer city where life is presumably easier, the answer was: NO!

Having been brought here by Kartok Lama, the woman who runs Hard Rock Cafe up here in these mountains you saw in my previous video, I was told I could spend the night to experience and get a unique insight into Tibetan village life in the Himalayas.

Naturally this was an opportunity I was obviously not going to miss....

Nepal's Himalayan Express ????????

■ NEPAL, SYAPRU BESI: The Himalayas, home of Mount Everest, also have many lesser known peaks and mountain plateaus that are far more accessible to the layman trekker. One of these is the Kyankin Ri mountain top, which is accessible by foot if you're willing to walk for the 3 days it takes to hike up there.

Having never done anything other than single day mountain hikes, I felt up for the challenge. But first I needed to get up to the Langtang National Park where the gorge you'll walk through to get to the Langtang mountain range begins.

That meant a grueling 8 hour bus journey on what is surely the worst road I've ever driven on. But when I rocked up at Kathmandu's central bus station at 5AM to board the Himalayan Express Bus I had no idea about the adventure that lay ahead...

■ NEW INSTAGRAM:

Surviving in Himalaya ????????

■ HIMALAYA, KYANJIN GUMPA: Surviving the brutal conditions of the Himalayan mountains is no joke. But the many peoples that call these mountains home; Sherpas, Tamangs and Tibetans just to name a few, have adapted fairly well. The ox looking animal known as the Yak is key to their adaption.

Yak bulls and cows gives these mountain dwelling people milk, fur, meat, insulation, cement and also fuel! Yes, you heard right. Yak dung is used as fire-wood; fueling stoves and warm meals in communities living way above the tree-line.

Kyanjin Gumpa, which sits at 4000m above sea level at the end of Nepal's Langtang valley, actually do have a little forest growing on a mountain nearby. Exactly how, given that the mountainside the town is built on is completely treeless, I never got a proper answer to. I did notice some small streams coming down the mountain the forest grows on though, meaning it's probably perpetually naturally irrigated.

The people living in Kyanjin Gumpa hence don't have to solely rely on Yak dung for all their heat and cooking needs. But they do use it to supplement their fires, which regardless of which fuel is being burnt, are incredibly labor intensive to maintain.

Just how labor intensive exactly? Well you be the judge as I become a Himalayan Yak Dung Hunter for a day.... ????

Trekking in the Indian Himalayas 2012

See for photos and trip reports. When the trip to your adventure is an adventure in itself, you know you are going to have some good stories to tell! But, what is this adventure? .... Well, it's a 13 day trek in the Indian Himalayas put on by Geck and Co in the summer of 2012. This short 6 minute video is a summary of this hike, which includes climbing up over Kang la pass and Poat la pass at 18,500 feet. This video is just a teaser about the adventures that took place ... and the fantastic scenery that was discovered on this trip.

Hard Rock Cafe Himalaya ????????

■ NEPAL, HIMALAYA: I thought the American hard rock cafe chain was the real deal..... that was until high up in the Himalayan mountain range I discovered a cafe that goes by the same name, but the famous American restaurant chain, is actually built into a huge rock. That's right... the Himalayan Hard Rock Cafe is literally a cafe that is built into a hard rock.

If you saw my videos from a few weeks back, you'll have seen me walk by the Himalayan Hard Rock Cafe starving... only to discovered that it was closed. That coupled with the fact that I never swam in the river at the highest point kept bothering the hell out of me after I'd returned to Kathmandu.

It made me want to go back to complete my physical and culinary mission. Then as I started uploading my Himalayan videos... people from the Langtang mountain range started reaching out telling me how grateful they were for marketing their region and sending tourists back up their way.

One of the people who wrote me runs a bakery in Kyanjin Gumpa. He mentioned he knew the owner of The Hard Rock Cafe that was closed when I did my trek. After giving her a call he told me she'd open the restaurant just for me.

It was time to return to the mountains...

Just recently I came back from my month holiday in Nepal and I decided it would be great to do a small review for myself and for those who intend to visit this beautiful country full of middle eastern food, people with wide smiles and absolutely mind blowing scenery.
A couple of years ago I started my first backpacking trip and got into hiking. There is something satisfying and primal at the same time about climbing high peaks and pushing your body to a different level.
There are hundreds of great places to visit in Nepal starting from day trips to 3 weeks walks.

After some research I found route called three passes which is the toughest tramp in Nepal Everest region without using climbing ropes. Estimated distance is around 120 km which does not sound so bad. However, elevation makes a big difference.
Starting point Lukla with 2860m and climbing up to highest point of Kala Patthar with 5643m above sea level is definitely hard work. During the entire journey you climb a couple of peaks over 5000 meters.

Here is the list:

1st pass- Kongma La 5528
2nd pass- Cho la 5420
3rd pass - Renjo La 5360
Chhukung Ri - 5546
Kala Patthar - 5643
Gokyo Ri - 5357

There are a couple of ways how to get to starting point of this trek. I will tell you two most popular. You can either take a jeep to Jiri 1905 meters elevation and start walking up or if you have limited time or feel like you don't need and extra acclimatization just fly for 180 dollars straight to Lukla 2860 meters.
If your starting point is Lukla, trek is about 15 days for experienced hikers with 2 rest days and 18-20 days for others.

On the way up you can meet heaps of porters carrying a load on their back and neck, which can be even around 100 kg. Porters carry everything from beer, toilet paper, coca cola, coffee to gear of other hikers so they can just hike with their day pack to next tea house.
There were many times I met with donkeys or yaks on a narrow trail in the mountains . Animals do not care about you and they push you around if there is not enough space for them to pass.
Starting from pine forest all the way up to rocks, sand and no vegetation with peaks covered with snow. The air got thicker and I could feel my body is getting more tired after 4000 meters even though I did not do any big distance.

Notice : I did the whole trek solo /unsupported and without any guide.
