THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE VISITING SOUTH KOREA

In this things to know before visiting South Korea, we share everything you need to know before visiting the Asian country, including getting to South Korea, South Korea travel tips and what you need to know if you are visiting South Korea for the first time.

Korea Packing list

If you are starting to write your packing trip, there is a few things you need to remember to include. Firstly, an umbrella is essential, it can rain a lot in Korea but it is also common to use an umbrella to share yourself when walking in the hot sun. You will also need to bring some decent trainers or sneakers, you will be doing a lot of walking in the major cities but there are also some great hikes to chose from near Seoul. You may also want to bring some deodorant, you can find this in some drugstores but it expensive and rare to find. Ladies, I recommend carrying some tissue around with you, most restrooms are western but you will find some squat toilets in smaller villages. One more thing to pack is slippers, water shoes or a spare pair of flip flops. Most hotel rooms will not have a bath or enclosed shower, so it is worth having a pair of slippers just for the bathroom to avoid wet feet.

Korea apps

Before arriving, also download the google translate app and a currency converter. Not all restaurants, cafes and taxi drivers can speak English, so have a translate app will help you a lot. The currency in South Korean is Won so use a currency converter to check prices, especially when purchasing souvenirs or food in touristy areas.

Seoul

Seoul is the capital and many peoples firs choice when heading to the country. There are a lot of historic sites and incrusting experiences to be had here but don’t spend your whole visit in the city. Be prepared for crowds and congestion, Seoul is home to over 25 million residents; half of the countries total.

Seoul is also a great place for shopping wit endless malls but a massive variety of fashion, accessories and beauty stores. It is also a great place to try some new products; there are beauty and skincare products everywhere so try something new whilst you are in Korea.

Try the cafes. When in Seoul, you have to head to at least one of the amazing cafes in the city. With themed cafes, unique cafes, modern cafes and instagram worthy drinks to try, plan a visit during your trip.

Restaurant tips

When you are in a restaurant, it is common for servers to avoid interrupting you whilst you are eating. This means if you need something else, perhaps another drink or serving of something, you will need to wave or press the call button on your table.

Another thing to note in restaurants is the chopsticks. Koreans use metal chopsticks, which can be a little harder to use than wooden ones. However, you can use a spoon to eat rice and make sure you place your chopsticks back down on the table when you are finishing with them - do not leave them sticking up vertically out of your bowl.

Also, when you want to pay the bill, it is likely to already be on your table. Check the sides or underneath the table and pay at the payment stand; there is normally some type of sign or server behind a table.

Some other table manners to be aware of; our your elder’s drink before your own, do not blow your nose whilst sitting at a table, don’y pick up your bowl to eat and drink your soup before trying other dishes.

SUMMARY:
- Restaurant and café employees get paid really well, so tipping is seen as an incredibly rude gesture and a jab at their dignity.
- Holding the sticks vertically and sticking them vertically into rice are associated with death in South Korea because it resembles the incense sticks stuck in the sand at funerals.
- When visiting someone’s home in South Korea, it’s impolite to refuse refreshments and even more offensive if you don’t finish what’s been served.
- You might feel uneasy about the number 13, but a lot of countries in East Asia have the same attitude, only with the number 4.
- The age-old tradition of giving gifts to teachers for Teachers Day on May 15 was made illegal in South Korea back in September of 2016. The law prohibits teachers from receiving gifts from students or their parents.
- Many East Asian countries don’t like tattoos, and they’ve even managed to encode this into their laws. In South Korea, it’s illegal for tattoo artists to practice their work, and only licensed medical doctors are legally allowed to ink people.
- A lot of women there will stick to high necklines or wear layers under low-cut tops just to err on the side of caution. However, the attitude towards miniskirts is drastically different!
- It’s important to avoid looking directly into someone’s eyes if they’re older than you or they have a higher position (like your boss).
- If you’re out and about in the streets of Seoul (or anywhere in the country for that matter), never take photographs with strangers in the frame. It might land you a fine or a night spent at the police station.
- You might well be a rocket scientist, but in South Korea, you have to listen to your elders, especially if they’re rocket scientists, too. No, just kidding about that last part.
- You know it’s polite to cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze, but take extra precaution when it comes to blowing your nose in Korea.
- Now, this might come as a surprise given all the other things on this list, but talking about your #1 and #2 is totally normal in Korea! And I’m not just talking about between family, friends, or partners – even colleagues will go into great detail about their bodily functions!

Things Not to Do in South Korea

South Korea is one of those places that we may visit just once in a life time because well... It's in a bit of a troubled area. But, if you do, remember these things not to do so you can enjoy your trip to the fullest.

1. Don't Speak Loudly
This is considered very rude, and you won't be making any friends like this, especially on public transportation. Try to be polite and speak in a normal tone of voice. Nobody wants to have to listen to your comments.

2. Don't Leave Your Chopsticks Stuck in Rice
Sometimes we do things without thinking. Wash the dishes, lay the table, stick the chopsticks in the rice. No! In South Korea, this is offensive as it resembles the incense sticks burnt at funerals. They don't like it at all.

3. Don't Focus Just on Seoul
Of course it's very important that you don't miss this city. But bear in mind that there are more places to see, such as Suwon in Gyeonggi Province or go all the way to Busan. It will be worth it.

4. Don't Think That Everyone Speaks English
No, not everybody speaks English, get used to it. You could either learn some polite words in Korean, use Google Translate or just use your hands to point. However you do it, be patient and comprehensive!

5. Don't Refuse Drinks From Your Elders
We usually respect our elders, but Koreans take it to another level. So if an elder offers you a drink you are expected to take it whether you want it or not. Don't even think about refusing it, just hold it and you will make him happy.

6. Don't Wear Revealing Clothes
You will attract some stares if you go with an exposed back or shoulders. But only the upper side of your body! You can show as much leg as you want!

7. Don't Forget to Try New Food
Some people don't dare to try new food and go straight to a McDonald’s. But you'll regret it if you don't try at least some hotteok fresh from a street stall, kimchi or chicken feet. They have excellent food that you won't find in any other place.

8. Don't Be The First to Eat Your Meal
Here, it’s also a sign of respect to wait for the elders to start eating. Even if you’re starving, just be patient and wait for them, and afterwards wait for them again to leave the table.

9. Don't Forget to Take Off Your Shoes
In restaurants or people’s homes, it is customary to take off your shoes. So, just do as they do and take them off. Bear this in mind when choosing your socks!

10. Don't Give Things With Just One Hand
It doesn't matter if you're giving or receiving something, in South Korea, they do it with both hands. Even if you don't understand this tradition, just do as they do. You wouldn't want to offend them, right?

Where do you want to know what not to do in next?
