Huge, ancient, and beautiful, China is a country that holds both rich mystery and history. Travel through our top 10 interesting China facts to learn more, from how many billions of chopsticks the Chinse use a year to who exactly invented the fortune cookie.

1. China is often considered the world’s longest continuous civilization. Chinese characters are the world’s longest continuously used written language.

2. The Chinese invented ketchup. It was originally a fish sauce called ke-tsiap.

3. Fortune cookies are not a traditional Chinese custom. They were invented in 1920 by a worker in the Key Heong Noodle Factory in San Francisco.

4. Nearly 30% of San Francisco's air pollution is from China.

5. Cricket fighting is a popular pastime in China. Many Chinese children even keep crickets as pets.

6. In ancient China, it was customary for both wealthy men and women to grow their fingernails extremely long as a sign of their rank.

7. The Chinese have made silk since at least 3,000 B.C. They fiercely guarded the secrets of silk making, and anyone caught smuggling silkworm eggs or cocoons outside of China was put to death.

8. The Chinese use about 80 billion pairs of chopsticks annually.

9. In China's Xinjiang province, police use geese as security animals instead of dogs.

10. There are currently 32 million more boys under the age of 20 than girls in China. In the future, tens of millions of men will be unable to find wives.

It is actually a network of fortifications rather than a single structure, and is the product of countless labors over a period of some two thousand years. Qin Shi Huang took the remnants of truly ancient fortifications, walls, and earthworks begun in the fifth century B.C. and linked them into a unified wall circa 220 B.C. as part of a massive project to protect China against marauding barbarians from the north.
