10 Things to Do on your Family Trip to Inverness, Scotland - Capital of the Scottish Highlands

For A walking tour of Inverness see City Walks vid here:
For Fun things to do in Aberdeen, Scotland see here:
During our MONTH IN SCOTLAND we did a LOT of family activities. In 10 Things to Do on your Family Trip to Inverness, Scotland - Capital of the Scottish Highlands we show you just some of the things to do at Inverness. Most lists focus on the day trips from Inverness you can take around the little city near Loch Ness. And there are a lot of things to do in the area, but we wanted to focus on the city itself. It's a charming, rather small, city on the Ness river where it flows into the Moray Firth. It's leafy and green in the summer and I think one of our favorite things was just walking along the river. It was so peaceful and beautiful. Your first stop is at Inverness Castle which provides a great view and is a great place for things to do Inverness. We hope you will enjoy these fun family activities, most of which are free, and let us know on the website, instagram, or facebook all the things we missed.

INVERNESS, SCOTLAND (2023) | 9 Fun Things To Do In & Around Inverness & Loch Ness

Inverness is located on Scotland’s northeast coast and is considered the cultural capital of the Scottish Highlands. It’s a fairly small and compact city with an abundance of places to stay, eat, and shop. In this video, we highlight 9 fun things to do in & around Inverness:

9. Walk the waterfront & Ness Islands
One of the most peaceful things to do in Inverness is to stroll around its beautiful waterfront area to the Ness Islands. You can start your walk in the city center and follow both banks of the river in an easy 3 km or 2 mi loop.

8. Hit the pub at night
For a classic Highland pub experience, head to one of the many pubs on Church Street: Highlander, Hootananny, Gellions, and more!

7. Visit Inverness Cathedral
Another fun thing to do in Inverness is to visit Inverness Cathedral, located on the banks of the River Ness. Built in 1869, this historic building is one of the prettiest cathedrals in all of Scotland. You can also visit the inside for a small fee.

6. Admire Leakey’s bookshop
If you’re into reading books, then Leakey’s bookshop is a must-visit. This is Scotland’s largest second-hand bookshop and you can find anything here, from contemporary paperbacks to vintage prints, books, and maps.

5. Do a whisky tasting
Scotland is famous for its whisky and Scottish people are very proud of this sophisticated drink. In Inverness, you can find whiskey at any bar or pub. We did a whiskey tasting at the Malt Room, which offers over 200 different malt whiskies for tasting.

4. Shop souvenirs at the Victorian Market
Built in 1890, the covered Victorian Market houses a variety of shops selling unique handmade gifts, art, and crafts. There are also a number of cafés and dining experiences here. It’s a great place to shop Scottish souvenirs.

3. Visit the nearby Clava Cairns & Culloden Battlefield
This prehistoric site is a well-preserved Bronze Age cemetery complex that dates back to around 2000 BC. There are three different large cairns that can be visited and it’s entirely free. Nearby, you can also find the Culloden Battlefield & Viaduct, which played a significant role in Scottish History. It’s easy to combine both in one visit.

2. Spot Nessie at Loch Ness
Located only a short drive from Inverness, Loch Ness is home to the legendary monster called Nessie, which is said to live in the deep, murky waters. Fort Augustus is situated on the southern tip of Loch Ness, offering boat tours and spectacular views.

☑️ Loch Ness day tour from Inverness:
☑️ Loch Ness boat tour from Dochgarroch (13 mins drive from Inverness):

1. Visit Urquhart Castle
Finally, along the north shore of Loch Ness, you’ll find the ruins of spectacular Urquhart Castle.

SCOTLAND TRAVEL (2023) | 10 Beautiful Places To Visit In Scotland (+ Itinerary Suggestions!)

Scotland is the most northerly part of the four areas that make up the United Kingdom. It’s known for rugged landscapes defined by mysterious lochs, magical mountains, and gothic castles. Scotland also has a strong culture featuring Celtic music, traditional kilts, and sophisticated whiskies. In this video, we show 10 of the best places to visit in Scotland.

10. Edinburgh
Edinburgh is located in the south-east and it’s Scotland’s most beautiful and interesting city. This is the place to take in the unique Scottish culture, with a vibrant pub scene and intriguing historic sites.

???? Watch Edinburgh Video:

9. Loch Lomond & the Trossachs National Park
Situated approximately 60 miles or 96 kilometers to the west of Edinburgh, Loch Lomond & the Trassachs National Park is the oldest national park in Scotland. It’s one of the most popular places to visit thanks to its proximity to urban areas as well as a wide variety of activities.

☑️ Boat tour Loch Lomond:

8. Glencoe Valley
Glencoe Valley is located in the Scottish Highlands in western Scotland. The area is known for its impressive mountain scenery, beautiful waterfalls, and trails that climb steep peaks, such as the Pap of Glencoe.

7. Glen Nevis
Located right outside the town Fort William, Glen Nevis is one of the most spectacular and beautiful glens in the Highlands. Above all, it’s home to Britain’s highest mountain: Ben Nevis, which is an impressive day hike.

6. Glenfinnan Viaduct
Only a stone's throw away from Glen Nevis and Fort William, the Glenfinnan Viaduct is a must-visit in Scotland! Made famous in the Harry Potter films, this 21-arched viaduct is set amongst some of Scotland’s finest scenery!

Located only a short drive from Inverness, Loch Ness is one of the most famous places in all of Scotland. The legend of the monster called Nessie goes back to ancient times.

3. Eilean Donan Castle
The Eilean Donan Castle is one of the most photographed castles in the world for a good reason. It’s perfectly situated on a small island with a charming curved bridge connecting it to the mainland.

2. Old Man of Storr (Isle of Skye)
Skye is the second largest island in Scotland and in our opinion, it has the most picturesque views you’ll encounter on your trip. The Old Man of Storr is the most iconic sight on the island and attracts many hikers and tourists alike.

1. Quiraing (Isle of Skye)
Quiraing is located on the Northern end of the Isle of Skye and boasts some of the best natural views in all of Scotland. The jagged landscape was caused by a landslip, which exposed strange rock formations underneath a large cliff.

Our Gear:
We travel with a Microsoft Surface everywhere we go. I edit my videos on it & use it to backup my pictures and vides while we travel. It’s light and the best travel laptop on the market in my opinion.

We use Sony Alpha series cameras to film our videos. They are compact so you don’t look like a super tourist when you take great pictures and videos while you travel.

We use Manfrotto Tripods. They are compact, travel well, and honestly I would not use another tripod for my nice cameras.

Travel Plug that works in pretty much any country & has four USB ports. A must for any traveler.

Want to grab some great gear? We have used Osprey Packs for years & swear by them. Check them out here

Need some clothing for your next adventure? Patagonia has some pretty good stuff for all kinds of travelers.

10 things to do in Scotland song by @gnossmusic #scotlandtravel #edinburgh #travelvlog

Song by gnossmusic.
Here are 10 things you can do if visiting Scotland in 2023, so save this short for later:

1. Visit Edinburgh Castle, is a must if visiting Edinburgh! We spent about 3 hours there.

2. Eat a Full Scottish Breakfast and try Haggis - a National dish at least once! This is made of minced sheep heart, liver and lungs mixed with oatmeal and seasonings. It actually tastes better than it sounds ????

3. Find and try some delicious Scottish fudge! We found these on the Royal Mile in Edinburgh.

4. Go up to Calton Hill in Edinburgh, the sunsets from there are supposed to be beautiful, as well as the view of the city and Arthur’s seat.

5. Take a boat tour of Loch Ness or look for Nessie from the beautiful Urquhart Castle ruins right on the banks of Loch Ness.

6. Visit a few of the over 1000 castles and ruins of Scotland, there are lots of options to choose from! We visited only 14 ????

7. Visit Culloden Battlefied if in the Inverness area. This historical battle location shaped the future of Scotland in 1745.

8. Take a drive or go hike in Glencoe. This beautiful mountainous area in the Highlands is simply breathtaking! Mountains and waterfalls can be spotted there.

9. Find some cute “Heilan” or “Harry” “coos”! These cute harry cows with bangs can sometimes be hard to find! But if you spot them you’ll be in love ????

10. Last but not least visit the Isle of Skye! This amazing island in the Inner Hebrides of Western Scotland is just stunning!

There is a whole lot more to do in Scotland, but for the purpose of making a short video we kept it at 10, so maybe a part 2 later on? Let us know if you’d like that in the comments ????
