10 Things You Didn't Know About Mayotte

Mayotte: A natural beauty that must be preserved | WIDE

Encircled by one of the world’s largest enclosed lagoons, the 101st French department is a real cultural crossroads between Africa, the Indian Ocean and Europe.

Mayotte’s population is very young: 55% of the population is under 20, the highest percentage of any French territory. But that doesn't mean traditions get lost here. Little villages still live in pace with age-old customs and nature reveals a surprise package of flora and fauna.

Did you know that the famous perfume maker Jean-Paul Guerlain used to own a garden here where he grew one of his main raw materials: the ylang-ylang?

What is COMOROS?!

I have made it safely to my 142nd country — the lovely African-island nation of COMOROS!

Nothing gets me more excited than visiting places like Comoros, which are completely hidden and overlooked by the world.

Truth be told, Comoros is booming with life and it has such a unique culture!!

Two Facebook friends, Hamza & Armel, picked me up at the Comoros main airport yesterday morning and have been driving me all over to visit the best places on the island. The people here in Comoros are so kind and welcoming, despite not speaking much English (everyone knows French as it was a French colony).

In this video, I have done my best to educate you a little bit about what life is like in Comoros. I hope you enjoy, and please, comment with any questions/thoughts/comments you may have!

Have you ever been to Comoros?

Bikes, Hikes and Fried Chicken in MAYOTTE - Sailing Cassius Tale 51

We visited Mayotte in 2019, and didn't plan to sail there again. It was a spontaneous decision, but one we never regretted. We discovered that Mayotte has a great scenery, a magnificent sheltered lagoon and a wonderful cultural mix of comorean and French.

We spent quite some time exploring the island - first on land, and then by sea.

Sailing into the JAWS OF THE TIGER! 5 day passage to MAYOTTE - Outside Watch - Vlog #13

In this vlog we set off on our next leg across the Indian Ocean, an 800 nautical mile sail from the Seychelles to Mayotte! The passage is not known to be an easy one as the compression zone near the top of Madagascar is notorious for some gnarly conditions. The strong southeast trade winds hit the landmass of Madagascar, compress to create strong wind, huge seas and the area is nick named the “Jaws of the tiger.”

In the end, we have a beautiful passage overall and arrive in Mayotte, which is technically part of France. Mayotte still feels very much like east Africa until you find a bakery!

Real Time Update:
We made it to Richards Bay, South Africa!!! We are currently waiting for a weather window to continue our way to Cape Town.

Mauritian Street Food: Discover a melting pot of flavours with Four Seasons Resort Mauritius

Mauritius is an island nestled in the heart of the Indian Ocean. Its street food draws inspiration from its vibrant cultural diversity (mainly from India, China, Africa, and Europe), and dishes are full of character and flavour. Elements and techniques from the blend of cuisines meld seamlessly to provide bursts of flavour that you can’t find anywhere else.

Often described as a cuisine that combines an abundance of colourful wonders, Mauritian cooking combines a number of different techniques; fried, grilled and steamed. It uses the glistening destination as an ongoing inspiration. The most common ingredients used in Mauritian cuisine are tomatoes, red onions, curry leaves, garlic, and chillies. Seafood such as fish and octopus are also staple ingredients served alongside Farata; a flatbread from India.

At Four Seasons Resort Mauritius at Anahita, the menus are curated to reflect the island’s eclectic identity. An array of creole dishes are available to sample at Bambou. Guests wishing to discover more about Mauritian cuisine can also partake in a private cooking class at the Resort, where our Chefs will share their inherited culinary secrets. There is nothing like wandering the streets of Mauritius on an adventure to try local gems that will leave a lingering umami taste and quench your thirst with a freshly cut coconut.

Sailing Mayotte - All Work and No(t much) Play

MAYOTTE is a small French Territory in Africa just between mainland and Madagascar. It was chiefly an emergency stop for us as we needed some parts and to do some repairs and maintenance before battling with the Mozambique Channel crossing. As Wiki says, here we are just fixing the boat in exotic locations. That describes it perfectly! Although it was more work than play, we did find some time explore the little island nation. We met a fellow sailor in Tanzania that told us all about the island and we made sure to find time to explore it as much as we could, with the limited time we had.
