10 best things to do in Seattle, Washington
Insider tips on the best things to do in Seattle from a Local Expert.
Situated between two major mountain ranges on the banks of Puget Sound, Seattle exists in a virtual wonderland for outdoor recreation. Amidst all of this nature, though, Seattle is also a smart and sophisticated place, known for technology and airplanes as much as for salmon and Sasquatch. Activities and attractions here match that dichotomy, providing equal doses of extreme and more mellow, indoor sports.
The city’s commitment and connection to its marine surroundings are on view at the Seattle Aquarium. As an alternative, though, visitors can choose to get out on the water, either by sea kayak rental or by riding the Washington State Ferry system. There are multitudes of scenic waterfront and woodland parks at which to enjoy the region’s natural beauty, and the piece de resistance is Mt. Rainier National Park, where visitors can get up close to the namesake peak, hike, camp or picnic.
In Ballard, The Chittenham Locks, where ships travel from the Puget Sound to Lake Washington and Lake Union, exemplifies Seattle’s dependence on its waterways and educates the public about salmon conservation. On the cerebral side, Seattle museums offer enlightenment on aviation, history and industry, art and science. And here, even music and sci-fi get time in the spotlight, thanks to the 140,000-square-foot Frank O. Gehry-designed Museum of Pop Culture (or MoPOP, formerly the EMP) and Science Fiction Hall of Fame at Seattle Center.

Seattle Travel Tips: 8 Things to Know Before You Go
Everything YOU need to know before you travel to Seattle Washington. With a population of 750,000, Seattle is located in the Pacific Northwest. Surrounded by water, evergreen forests, and mountains. The official nickname for Seattle is Emerald City, for all the trees. Also known as the Gateway to Alaska because it’s the closest big US city to Alaska. A major departure point for Alaska cruises. Seattle is home to major US companies like Microsoft, Amazon, Costco, and Formerly Boeing. Seattle is the birthplace of many iconic music acts like Jimi Hendrix, Nirvana, and Pearl Jam. Seattleites have a rep for being cold and standoffish. It's known as the Seattle Freeze.
2 - Weather
150 days of rain a year, with an average rainfall of 37 inches. It's generally not a huge downpour, but more of a steady drizzle. Make sure to bring a raincoat and umbrella.. Although you generally wont see the locals using an umbrella, just a raincoat. And if it's not raining, it's usually cloudy. Don't expect blue skies and sun here. Cloudy 201 days out of the year and partly cloudy 93 days. Winter is quite cold. Averages about 5 inches of snow per year.. If its snowing, don’t plan on going much of anywhere. The city mostly shuts down.
3 - Getting in
Flying in you’ll likely land at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SeaTac for short)
Home to Alaska Airlines
Take the light rail in to downtown. Takes approximately 40 minutes from the airport to downtown.
Coast Starlight from LA via Portland
Cascades runs from Vancouver, through Seattle, to Eugene Oregon
Empire Builder comes in all the way from Chicago
Driving in, it’s about 3 hours from Portland or Vancouver
4 - Getting around
Lots of water around. Which makes getting around slow.
Seattle traffic is awful.. I personally still get a rental car.
Don't want to rent one for the whole trip? Use Car2Go.
Seattle has one light rail line. Trains arrive every 6 to 15 minutes.
2 street car lines. Fares are $2.50 for adults.
1 Monorail line, from Westlake Center to Seattle Center. It’s a 2 minute ride for $2.50
Lots of bus lines too.
Oh and I mentioned water.. There’s also water taxis, and ferries.
Uber and Lyft are plentiful
Walking is the best way to get around.. but it's quite hilly. Maybe even more so than San Francisco. So bring your hill climbing shoes.
5 - Food
Just like NYC, Seattle has lots of very good restaurants, but they are expensive. Known for seafood. Locally caught Salmon and Crab. Shellfish, oysters.
Eat a Geoduck (gooey-duck) Clam, native to Washington. Popular in Asian cuisine.. 50% of all geoducks get exported to China. somewhere between chewy clam and a tender abalone, though crisper in texture than either”
Seattle hot dog.. with grilled onions Cream Cheese
Fast food of choice is Teriyaki
Adding to Seattle’s well-known hipster status it has a wide variety of micro-breweries. Over 200 breweries
6 - Coffee
Seattlite love coffee, and coffee shops. The coffee shop is like an extension of most people's homes, they study, they meet people, oh, and they drink some coffee.
Starbucks started in Seattle. There are more Starbucks per person in Seattle than in any other city. In Pike Place they call it the original.. But the original one is no more. If you are a fan of Starbucks visit their flagship Starbucks Reserve Seattle Roastery on Capitol Hill.
Bikini Baristas started in Seattle too.
7 - Hotels
I think the best place to stay is in the heart of downtown. Then you won’t have to fight traffic, or deal with the lousy public transit because you can walk to most things. Expensive during the weekend. Try visiting on the weekend when all the business folks are gone.
Want something a little quieter? Try the Queen Anne Neighborhood by the space needle. Still close, and probably a bit cheaper. Just not in the middle of it all.
Bainbridge Island for cheaper hotels
It's a 35 minute ferry ride in to Seattle for a cheap $8 round trip.
Or even around Seatac Airport
8 - Big attractions
Pike Place Market, Seattle Space Needle, the Waterfront.

10 Things To Do in Seattle, WA for TOURISTS AND LOCALS!
✅Best-Selling travel gear
The biggest city in the Pacific Northwest has a diverse population, a surplus of public parks and leafy residential neighborhoods on surrounding hills. Setting off the space age urban environment of the Seattle Center and the cluster of skyscrapers downtown, Seattle is ensconced in glorious natural scenery. There’s the vastness of Puget Sound, the outline of the Olympic Mountains off to the west, and the colossal mass of Mount Rainier, the most prominent peak in the United States.

Here are 10 things to do in Seattle.
Walk around the iconic pike place market.
Cascading down a steep hill to the waterfront on Elliott Bay is a market of amazing proportions. With a history going back to 1907, Pike Place Market has farmers’ stands for seasonal produce, a wealth of permanent produce stalls, four fish markets, dozens of specialty food stores for hard-to-find ingredients, a crafts market with more than 200 traders and an absurd amount of places to eat.
Stroll around the Seattle Center.
Below Queen Anne Hill at the northern fringe of Seattle’s downtown, the Seattle Center is a cultural, arts and entertainment zone on 74 acres.
The Space Needle.
A defining feature of Seattle’s silhouette for almost 60 years, the Space Needle is a timeless symbol for the city. The windows on the observation deck now have floor-to-ceiling glass panels that are unobstructed by mullions, in line with the original sketches in the early 1960s.
Check out Chihuly Garden and Glass.
This glass and steel structure was inspired by Chihuly’s fascination for conservatories, and suspended from the ceiling is a 30-meter work in yellow, red, orange, and amber that seems to change with the light throughout the day.
Visit the Museum of Pop Culture.
Since 2000 the Seattle Center Monorail has zipped through this outlandish sheet-metal building by Frank Gehry Up to 2016 this was the Experience Music Project and Science Fiction Museum and Hall of Fame, before settling on the more manageable “Museum of Pop Culture”.
The Seattle Art Museum.
Anchored in downtown Seattle, the Seattle Art Museum has two other locations, at the Olympic Sculpture Park and the Asian Art Museum (closed for renovation at the time of writing).
Ride the Seattle Great Wheel.
The giant Ferris wheel at Pier 57 is the tallest on the West Coast at more than 53 meters.
The Seattle Great Wheel may seem like a tourist trap at first glance but has a lot going for it.
Bill Speidel’s Underground Tour.
On June 6, 1889, a cabinet-maker accidentally ignited a glue pot, and the ensuing Great Seattle Fire wiped out 31 blocks. One upshot was that the reconstructed city’s streets were re-graded one to two stories higher than the original city streets. This helped keep the central Pioneer Square dry, as it had been built on a mudflat, and prevented toilets from backing up at high tide. It also left a cavernous subterranean space where the old storefronts used to be. The only way to venture into the brick-lined bowels of the city is with this 75-minute guided walking tour. It’s exciting to explore the forgotten city, but you’ll also be told lots of humorous anecdotes about Seattle’s earthy and roguish pioneers. Tours set off on the hour every day except Thanksgiving and Christmas Day.
Be amazed at the Washington Park Arboretum.
You can visit free of charge every day from dawn to dusk. Established in 1934, the Washington Park Arboretum has a top-notch winter garden, as well as world-class collections of maples, oaks, and camellias. The arboretum’s most treasured feature is the Azalea Way, a 3/4 mile walk bordered by flowering cherries, magnolias, dogwoods, and of course azaleas, all framed by second-growth conifers and evergreens.
Ride the Washington State Ferries.
Can you really say you’ve been to Seattle if you haven’t crossed the Puget Sound on a ferry? Washington State Ferries (WSF) maintains the largest fleet of ferries of any operator in the United States (23), running 12 different routes on what is the fourth-largest ferry system in the world. Perhaps the best trip is the Seattle-Bainbridge Island ferry, departing from Pier 52 and taking 40-45 minutes. Looking back, you can appreciate the skyline and the beautiful homes and beaches of West Seattle. Bainbridge Island is also desirable, often touted as one of the most liveable places in the United States. On landing, you could call in at the highly-rated Bainbridge Island Museum of Art.

Seattle - City Video Guide
Seattle, on the coast between Puget Sound and Lake Washington is one of North America's most beautiful cities.
In Downtown Seattle, you will discover some of the city's oldest buildings around Pioneer Square. The Seattle Waterfront is famous for its seafood restaurants and pleasure cruises, and it's a short, steep climb to Pike Place Market.
A short drive north from downtown brings you to Woodland Park Zoo, the Seattle Museum of Flight, or Lake Union.
The Seattle Center is home to the Pacific Science Center and the popular International Fountain, as well as Seattle's most recognized landmark, the Space Needle. On a clear day, the observation deck at the top offers views as far as Mount Rainier.
Meanwhile Kerry Park on the south side of Queen Anne Hill offers a great view of Seattle and the Space Needle itself, which is particularly impressive when the sun goes down.
