10 Things Not to Do in Fiji

Get more Tips here!

Before you head out to the islands of Fiji, it’s imperative to do a little bit of research. Call us Debbie Downers all you want, but ignoring this list of 10 things NOT to do in Fiji can definitely put a damper on your tropical vacay.

1. Don't Forget to Book a Village Tour
Many resorts offer guided village tours. For a small feel, you’ll be taken to rural areas to see the traditional Fijian way of life. At the end of the tour, you’ll be greeted by local artisans who sell handcrafted items that would make the perfect souvenirs.

2. Don't Ride Share
If you need to get around town, a taxi is your best bet. But you should definitely steer clear of ride sharing. According to travel advisories, taxi drivers are the victims of many crimes. So make sure your driver doesn’t pick up randoms while they’re taking you to your destination.

3. Don't Expect to Party All Night
Fijians go to bed super early. If you have plans on partying until the wee hours of the morning, you’re on your own. We recommend Beachcomber, a tiny island in the volcanic archipelago known as the Mamanuca Islands which hosts wonderful island parties with live music and entertainment. There isn’t much going on when nighttime hits.

4. Don't Go Hiking Alone
You’ll experience some of the best sights while hiking in Fiji, especially at Koroyanitu National Park. But proceed with caution while you’re making your trek. Many of the paths aren’t well-maintained and the terrain can be hazardous. Also, it’s also safer to hike with a companion or a guide.

5. Don't Show Too Much Skin
In any other areas, wearing shorts and tank tops is fine. However, if you’re going to visit a village. Women are expected to cover their shoulders and both men and women should wear shorts that cover their knees. Also, hats and sunglasses should be removed as a form of respect.

6. Don't give Candy to the Kids
If you want to give the kids some candies, you should hold off on giving out sugary snacks. The diabetes-related death rate in Fiji is the second-highest in the world. Children also don’t visit the dentist as frequently, so giving them candy will just cause more dental issues for them in the long run.

7. Don't stay in Urban Areas
To cut down on your chances of an unfortunate event happening during your trip, steer clear of the urban areas. There’s a higher crime rate there than in rural areas. If you want to explore a certain part of one of the islands, make sure you ask your resort staff if the area is safe beforehand.

8. Don't be too impatient
If you’re visiting from a fast-paced environment, you may want to continue on with your normal way of living in the midst of the hustle and bustle. However, in Fiji everything moves at the pace of a turtle. So go ahead and embrace the slow pace. You deserve to kick back and relax!

9. Don't Drive on the Right
In Fiji, you’ll drive on the left side of the road. And, make sure you’re very attentive when driving after dark. Roads in the city are paved, but once you enter the rural areas, the roads aren’t properly maintained. There aren’t adequate street lights or road signs, and many of the roadways are full of potholes.

10. Don't Drink Too Much Kava
Kava is a legal and traditional herbal drink made from the ground root of a spicy pepper plant. There are actual kava ceremonies. A glass of kava won’t do you any harm, but if you drink too much, it can cause grogginess and a decrease in motor coordination and reaction times. So on that note: Don’t kava and drive!

✨Tips and Recommendations✨
✅Best Time to Visit: May to October are the best months to visit, as this is the dry season with lower rainfall, milder temperatures, and less humidity.
✅Pack Right: Pack light, breathable clothing, as Fiji has a tropical climate. Sunscreen, insect repellent, hats, and beachwear are essential.
✅Respect Local Culture: Fijians are traditionally conservative, so it's best to dress modestly, particularly when visiting villages. It's also customary to remove hats and sunglasses in a village as a sign of respect.
✅Currency: The local currency is Fijian dollars. ATMs are available in cities and tourist areas. Most businesses also accept credit cards.
✅Offending Locals: Respect local customs and traditions. Do not enter houses or other premises without an invitation, and always ask for permission before taking photos of locals.
✅Unsafe Areas: While Fiji is generally safe, every location has less safe areas. Always be aware of your surroundings, especially at night.
✅Learn Basic Fijian Phrases: A simple Bula (hello) or Vinaka (thank you) goes a long way in connecting with locals.

Welcome to the Travel Code! Your Virtual travel guide with all the best places to go and see while either planning for a trip or looking for things to do while you're here.
On today's list of the best vacation spots to visit, we bring you the islands of Fiji!

A serene Island in the South Pacific Ocean that surrounds the Koro Sea and is located 1300 miles north of New Zealand.

Fiji never fails to astound its visitors with its complex geologic history and heart-caging peaceful views that you can never forget. The Fiji islands are mostly the magic of volcanic activity, sedimentary deposits, and coral formations. They are based on a submerged substrate of an ancient formation.

Coastal areas are embellished with palm trees, while tropical fruits and vegetables are almost seen everywhere and are cherries on top of Fiji's beauty. While mangrove forests are located on eastern shores, the shoreline consists of reefs and rocks.
There's more to it that you can explore, and here's the list to start with, but before it, don't forget to subscribe to our channel!

1. Fijian Day Cruise

To start our list, we have the day cruise, and I am sure no one wants to miss out on such a thrilling experience.
Only boats can get you to the Mamanuca Islands. You'll be picked up from your hotel on Denarau Island and taken by boat to Sand Island, Monu Island, and Modriki Island. You'll maximize your trip and get more done if you visit several islands in one day. Enjoy a fantastic Fijian buffet lunch and some free time to swim and snorkel.

Visit Modriki Island, which, fun fact, is the location of the Cast Away movie starring Tom Hanks! The journey includes a delicious buffet meal. On this Day Cruise, see several Mamanuca Islands. This is the best place for tourists looking for places to go swimming and snorkeling.

2. Malamala Beach Club

On this day, admission to Malamala Beach Club allows you to unwind on a secluded island. As you depart from Port Denarau, take a quick ferry ride across the pristine water. Enjoy a full day of activities while you're there, such as Swimming or snorkeling or indulging in chef-prepared poolside appetizers with a range of alcoholic beverages. At the Malamala Beach Club, unwind on a private island for the day. Various types of equipment for snorkeling and swimming are provided. Make full use of the facilities, including the beach and the mighty pool. The ferry tickets are given for a round-trip so you can travel without worry.

3. Jet Boat Safari on the Sigatoka River

On this tour, which includes a jet boat trip along the Sigatoka River, you can stop by in a nearby town, you'll get to know the real Fiji. Jet boats on the Sigatoka River will take you deep into the island before stopping for a kava ceremony, a village visit, and lunch. Includes all excursions, travel, and pickup and drop-off at the hotel in Sigatoka.
On the Sigatoka River, from Sigatoka, enjoy a thrilling jet boat ride and a village tour. From your guide, learn about the culture and history of Fiji. Next, observe the ambiance of the village and the river to get a sense of the interior of Fiji. Next, experience the faster parts of the jet boat tour for a thrill. Finally, visit the town with the residents and eat lunch there. Lunch, transfers, a guide, a jet boat trip, and hotel pickup and drop-off are all included.

4. Cultural Night Tour

On this escorted trip that features a Kava Ceremony and Meke Show, take part in a celebration that lasts until dusk in a nearby Fijian village. First, visit a traditional community and learn how food is prepared and consumed there. Then, participate in a Kava Ceremony, learn the protocol, and drink the Kava root. After your lunch, watch a fire dance and a Meke performance.
Visit a nearby village to familiarize yourself with its people, culture, and way of life. You can Watch a fire dance as well! Enjoy regional cuisine prepared underground in a Lovo, with round-trip transport for your convenience.

5. Mud Pools

Tour Nadi, the significant island of Fiji's capital, with a local guide. Visit the Sri Siva Subramaniya Swami Hindu temple, which caters to Fiji's sizable Indian community, and browse the neighborhood markets and duty-free stores. Next, visit the Garden of the Sleeping Giant to see more than 2,000 different types of orchid species. The destination's last stop is the geothermal mud pools and it is believed to provide medicinal benefits.
You will have a Nadi half-day tour and the golden chance to visit local markets, mud baths, gardens, and more. A guide or a driver will always be beside you to assist, and you will be picked up and dropped back at the hotel. So that means no hassle for you at all.

Things not to do when you go to Fiji Islands

This dreamy South Pacific archipelago is a bucket list bullet point for every tropic-loving vagabond. Fiji boasts golden palm-lined beaches, crystal clear turquoise lagoons, spectacular coral reefs and an abundance of water sports. It’s cheap, the food is great, and Fijian’s are some of the friendliest in the world.

There’s no need for more convincing. We’re all sold on a trip to Fiji.

Sometimes, amidst the sunburn, smoothies and satisfied bellies of Fiji, we forget to look out for ourselves. Travelling isn’t always glamorous. It’s important to be a little more cautious when we venture from home.

Don’t be an overconfident snorkeler:
Even if you have snorkelled before, everyone is vulnerable to getting tired. While the snorkelling in Fiji is incredible, try not to overwork yourself. Recognise your limits and take a flotation device if you need. Snorkel with a friend and head back to shore before your energy runs outs.

Here are 7 things to do in Fiji:

Bask on the beaches

We’re sure that this idea popped into your head when you think about Fiji, with its alluring, pristine white beaches. The beaches of Fiji are truly amazing! Slap on your sunscreen and have a quiet time lazing by the beach or suntanning until the sun goes down.

Snorkel over coral reefs

If things get a little too hot, sign up for a snorkeling session to cool off. Take a relaxing swim across Fiji’s wondrous coral reefs and peek into the underwater world below. Known around the globe for their warm, clear waters and rich marine life, Fiji will give you a snorkeling experience that is unlike no other.

Take a deep breath and dive underwater

Prefer to get up close and personal with the denizens in the water? Fiji has a large number of dive spots! Explore the corals in all their multi-coloured magnificence at the Great White Wall, home to the famous Rainbow Reef. Or swim alongside manta rays and sea turtles in the Great Astrolabe Reef, one of the world’s longest barrier reefs, while discovering their habitats. If you’re feeling a little braver, you can accompany experienced Fijian divers as they feed the local sharks at Beqa Lagoon. Just be sure to follow the safety guidelines, else you’ll be on the menu as well!

Go kayaking with a friend

The waters around Fiji aren’t just great for swimming; they’re also perfect for paddling! Grab a friend and go kayaking for a coastal adventure along the beaches. Not only do you enjoy the cooling breeze and great scenery, you can also tone those arms with all that paddling. Talk about a fun way to exercise!

Bring out your surfing board

For those looking to catch some waves, Fiji will not disappoint, especially during the months of May to October when the colossal breaks (waves) arrive. These large waves will leave even experienced surfers with second thoughts on riding the surf. Cloudbreak, a renowned surf spot, is ranked as among one of the top ten most challenging waves around the world. Even professional surfers have a tough time handling the waves there, so don’t go thinking that your Wave House Sentosa experience will save you.

Go Skydiving

If jumping out of a plane sounds like your idea of fun, you’re in luck! Sign up for a skydiving trip over Fiji’s islands! Not only do you get a thrilling adrenaline rush during the free fall, you’ll also be poised for an amazing view of coral reefs, clear waters and sandy beaches.

Zip-line through the trees

Want to feel like Tarzan in the middle of the jungle? Well, you can’t swing from vine to vine, but you can definitely try out the next best thing! Plenty of places offer canopy tours where you’ll take a zip-line from tree to tree. You’ll fly across lush greenery and enjoy stunning views from high above – if you dare to keep your eyes open, that is.
