10 Cringeworthy Ugly American Tourist Stereotypes

Get more Tips here!

The caricature of the “ugly American tourist” is a much-maligned species in international travel circles. But, valid or not, Americans seem to get the brunt of the criticism for their tacky tourist ways. Here are 10 cringeworthy ugly American tourist stereotypes.

1) I’m Wearing My Guns N’ Roses T-Shirt
Haven’t you seen Americans in get-ups like these when traveling? Knee socks and sandals, loud Hawaiian shirts, goofy hats, zinc covered noses, camera around the neck, map in hand. Nothing screams “tourist” like this ensemble. Consider it a fashion don’t.

2) Where are All My Valuables?
It's a handy and relatively secure place to keep money, a smart phone and other items front and center. Just know that its cringeworthy. Call it a fanny pack, belly bag, hip sack or waist wallet, don’t wear these things or you’re asking to be mocked, somewhat ironically, by the travel hipsters.

3) How Much Is That in Real Money?
Similar to the “can’t you speak English” type, some Americans abroad seem to be shocked that there’s a world of different currencies beyond their borders. They look at the unfamiliar bills and coins as Monopoly money, and are quite affronted that they can’t just pay in “real money”, meaning US dollars.

4) Do It Like We Do It Back Home
There are a lot of little luxuries Americans take for granted. Only when you leave the familiarity of home do you realize that some of these comforts aren’t universal. But some differences are worth opening your mind to and, shockingly, some things might even be better than back home... Or not.

5) I Have Spaghettios Back in the Room
There is a breed of close-minded, unadventurous ugly American tourist that doesn’t even try to go local when visiting new places. Convinced that they won’t like any foreign food, they pack a jar of peanut butter or a few boxes of Kraft Dinner to tide them over on their trip. Travel is an opportunity to get out of your box and comfort zone.

6) McDonalds, please?
There’s that cringeworthy American traveler who chooses to eat at familiar fast food chains even when venturing to culinary hotspots like France, Italy or Japan. What a waste to eat familiar burgers and fries when you could be sampling some local specialties.

7) Package tours
American tourist tends to stick to package tours and guided groups rather than risk going it alone. However, they leave little room for the spontaneity and serendipity that can really enhance the travel experience. You stick to the standard sites. Try exploring independently once in a while.

8) We Left Perfection to Visit Your Country
America is no utopia. Citizens of other countries might be more tolerant of “ugly American tourists” if they didn’t continually make the audacious assumption that America is the most envied place on the planet. So don't be that insufferable “USA #1” attitude and you might just help foster better world relations.

9) Is this School?
One of the more pervasive stereotypes that Americans are hit with is the assertion that they’ve traveled abroad with no intention of learning anything. Though several Americans do (obviously) travel with the hope of learning a little something, there’s a prominent theory that we’re all troglodytes in search of our next meal.

10) What, You’ve Never Heard of Springfield?
Several Americans travel abroad operating under the assumption that more foreigners have intimate knowledge of the United States. When asked where you’re from, most people haven’t actually heard of more cities than the biggies like New York and Los Angeles. Hey, have you heard of Ashdod, Israel? Yeah, then why would you expect someone from Europe to know where Duluth, Minnesota is?

Did you already know all of these stereotypes?

What American Tourists Should Be Aware of When They Visit Europe

When traveling there are a few things that we should always be aware of. Some things we don't even notice ourselves, like how loud our voice gets, while other things can help keep us out of unwanted situations, like being aware of our surroundings. Here are five things that travelers, vacationers and tourists should be aware of when they travel.
Filmed in Krakow, Poland
Copyright Mark Wolters 2017

1. Be aware of your voice. Talking loudly draws unwanted attention to you and it is rude to the people around you.
2. Be aware of your surroundings. When tourists report getting robbed or pickpocketed a lot of times it comes down to them not realizing that they were in a bad situation or in a place they should not have been or they should have been paying attention more.
3. Be aware of where your passport and wallet are at all times. Many tourists leave out their valuable at hotels or leave them in the outside pockets of their backpacks. These are easy spots for thieves to get. So keep valuables in the right spot.
4. Be aware of the locals. The locals can help you know what to wear, where to go and what to eat. But you need to pay attention to them and they can share helpful information without even talking to you.
5. Be aware of the news. Whether it is the weather or news it is important to stay aware of what is going on it can be a very good way to avoid any problems.

How to Not Look like a Tourist

Watch more How to Travel videos:

Being identified as a tourist is generally not a good thing. Here's how to blend in with the natives.

Step 1: Research local customs
Research the local cuisine and customs. That way, you won’t get punched for pointing your foot at someone in Thailand (considered extremely insulting) or laugh uproariously when someone in China offers you bird’s-nest soup.

Step 2: Dress appropriately in houses of worship
If you plan to visit houses of worship, determine what is acceptable attire. Some may require that women wear dresses or that your head be covered. Complying is often not only a sign of respect—but your only way in.

Step 3: Learn key phrases
Learn a few key phrases in the local language. Many tourists never bother to learn even the basics, so this will endear you to the natives and distance you from the tourists.

Step 4: Learn a few key phrases in the local
Don’t pack a tracksuit unless you’re planning to jog. Nothing says 'Tacky American' like a velour running suit, which in some countries is like wearing your pajamas. And leave your, 'I’m with Stupid ' t-shirt behind, too.

Tip
Forget the fanny pack. It a dead giveaway that you’re from out of town—and makes an easy target for pickpockets.

Step 5: Photocopy pages from your guide
Make photocopies of selected pages from guidebooks so you don’t have to lug the entire book around.

Step 6: Don’t shout
Speak at a soft but audible volume. Don’t fall prey to that bad American habit of speaking TOO LOUD in public places. Nothing betrays you faster than shouting, 'HEY, MABEL, ARE WE USING PESOS OR LIRE TODAY?'

Step 7: Don’t do the pee-pee dance
Don’t pantomime any body function requiring a restroom. In most parts of the world, 'toilet,' or a slight variant, is clearly understood and will resolve your need nicely.

Did You Know?
France remains the number one tourist destination, with an average of 76.7 million visitors each year—the U.S. ranks third, with almost 42 million.

5 Stupid Reasons Why Tourists Get Arrested

It is not just bad guys that get arrested, every day tourists and travelers run afoul of the law on a number of occasions. Here we give you a list of our five most common reasons why tourists have gotten arrested. This is not a scientific list, this is more from what we have seen throughout our travels to Europe, Asia and the Americas.
Filmed in Barcelona Spain
Copyright Mark Wolters 2017
1. Alcohol Related Arrests: whether it is drunk driving, public intoxication or getting into a fight while drunk, alcohol has played the part in a number of tourists and travelers run ins with the law.
2. Drug related arrests: just because you are on vacation doesn't mean the cops will look the other way and that holds true for drug use as well. Many travelers have ended up serving time in jail for drug offenses abroad.
3. Not knowing the laws of the land: ignorance is not an excuse not to know the law, at least that is what the cops will tell you abroad. Make sure you know of any laws that may affect you while you travel.
4. Trespassing: you may want to get the world's best selfie, but if you are doing onto private land or going off of the official path at national parks you may be trespassing and that can lead to a severe fine or worse.
5. Religious or Governmental misunderstandings: just because in your country you may have the right to protest against various things, that does not mean you may be able to protest in other countries the same way and speaking ill of the government or the official religion in some countries can get you in trouble with the law.

5 Tips to Not Be an Ugly American While Traveling

Don't Be an Ugly American
We have all seen them, heard them, been embaressed by them. They are the ugly tourists. Whether talking to loud, being culturally insensitive or just being annoying. Here are five tips from Wolters World in order for you NOT to be an ugly tourist.
1. Don't talk so loud.
2. Learn a bit of the native language.
3. Dress appropriately.
4. Learn a bit of the culture/history
5. Know that it is not your home country so things will be different, accept and appreciate those differences.

Are You An Ugly American?

You Might Be an Ugly American refers to the stereotype of American tourists or travelers who exhibit disrespectful and culturally insensitive behavior when visiting foreign countries. This term, popularized by the book The Ugly American, criticizes Americans who display arrogance, a lack of understanding, and a failure to adapt to local customs and traditions. It serves as a humorous and satirical reminder for Americans to be more culturally sensitive and respectful while traveling abroad, encouraging them to embody the qualities of a global citizen.
