If you're looking to avoid touristy spots for your next vacation, you might want to try visiting one of the most isolated places on Earth — some of which can only be accessed by boat or plane.
The volcanic island of Tristan da Cunha in the South Atlantic boasts a population of 258 people with only nine different last names.
The locals speak English, but have also invented their own dialect with words derived from Scottish, English, St Helenian, South African, American, Dutch, Italian, and Irish, reflective of their various places of origin.
There are no roads that lead to Barrow — the town is only accessible by plane, but the hour and a half flight from Anchorage is doable. Sitting at the very top of Alaska, their winter consists of 65 straight days of darkness.
Because of its remote location, the cost of living is high. A jar of peanut butter can cost $10. And, according to one resident, there are thousands more caribou than people.
In Supai, Arizona, the mail is delivered by mule. A remote village in the southwestern branch of the Grand Canyon, the village is only accessible by helicopter, horseback, or an eight-mile hike.
Supai is the tribal center of the Havasupai Tribe, which means People of the Green Blue Waters, a reference to four waterfalls along Havasu Creek that are popular with tourists.
La Rinconada sits three miles in the air in Peru's mountainous Puno province, making it the highest city in the world.
The town has no running water or sewage system, and nearly 68% of the population lives below the poverty line, according to CNN.
Getting there isn't easy. La Rinconada is a six-hour ride from the nearest city on unpaved roads with no regular buses. Your best bet is to hitch a ride.
A number of these remote locations feature gorgeous tropical climates, while others require braving Arctic temperatures or relentless deserts. The adventure is yours to choose.

Sometimes we tend to exaggerate and say that we live in the middle of nowhere, but these
people... they REALLY live in the middle of nowhere. And, for you to get a better idea of
what we mean, here are the 10 most isolated habited places in the world.
1. LA RINCONADA, PERU
This is the highest human settlement on earth. You can find it at 17,000 feet above sea level
in the Peruvian Andes. It has a population of 50,000 and their economy relies on the gold
they mine from nearby gold mines. The town lacks plumbing and sanitary drainage systems
but does have mercury contamination from the mining activities as well. So, that’s a hard
place to live in.
2. CHANGTANG, TIBET
It's known as The Roof of the World, at 9,000 feet. The winters are cold and Arctic-like.
They live as nomadic pastoralists, being known as 'Changpa', or 'Drokpa' together with snow
leopards and yaks. Ah, and, if you want to go there, you’ll need a permit to enter the area.
3. VILLA LAS ESTRELLAS, CHILE
It has a summer population of 150 and a winter population of 80. There is a ‘Correos de
Chile’ post office staffed in the summer by a postal worker and by the command of the base
in the winter. And they even have a Villa Las Estrellas Primary School with 3 computers
AND internet access! (that part is actually quite surprising…)
4. EDINBURGH OF THE SEVEN SEAS, SAINT HELENA
It's the most remote permanent settlement on Earth, being 2,173 kilometres from the nearest
other human settlement, on Saint Helena. In 1961, the whole population left because of the
eruption of a volcano, but most of them came back and rebuilt the place in 1963.
5. SUPAI VILLAGE, ARIZONA
This is the most remote community in the United States being the only place in the United
States where mail is still carried out by mules. Located within the Grand Canyon, it is only
accessible by foot, pack animal or helicopter, and as of the 2010 census, the CDP had a
population of 208.
6. COOBER PEDY, AUSTRALIA
This is the opal capital of the world because of the quantity of precious opals that are
mined there. The name Coober Pedy comes from the local Aboriginal term kupa-piti, which
means boys' waterhole. Visitors attractions include the mines, the graveyard and the
underground churches. And there are several motels offering underground accommodation
7. LONGYEARBYEN, NORWAY
This is the world's northernmost settlement of any kind with more than 1,000 permanent
residents. They live a combination of an Arctic climate tempered by the North Atlantic
Current, and experience midnight sun on half of the year and polar night the other half, so it's
a bit crazy. Then they have strange laws such as ban on cats, a restriction on how much
alcohol an individual can purchase on a monthly basis, and a requirement that any
individuals venturing outside carry a rifle for protection against polar bears. Also if you die
there they'll have to take your corpse to another town, they can't bury you there because
your body will stay forever.
8. PALMERSTON, COOK ISLANDS
There is no safe entry for large ships and it enjoys a tropical climate but is exposed to severe
tropical cyclones. 62 people live in Palmerston, all but three descended from English sailor
William Marsters so there are still many family links and common ancestors between these
atolls, because William Marsters and his three wifes had quite a large family of some 23
children, whose descendants now inhabit Palmerston.
9. SIWA OASIS, EGYPT
This is an urban oasis between the Qattara Depression and the Great Sand Sea. It is one of
Egypt's most isolated settlements with about 33,000 people, mostly Berbers, who developed
a unique culture and a distinct dialect called Siwi. It's the home to an oracle of Ammon,
where you can still visit the ruins.
10. WHITTIER, ALASKA
In 2016, they were 214 people living there. It is very popular with tourists because of its
abundance of wildlife and natural beauty. Just imagine, Whittier is located within the
Chugach National Forest, the second-largest national forest in the U.S. However, the only
land access is through the Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel, a mixed-use road and rail
tunnel.

EXTREME ISOLATION: The Most Remote Inhabited Places on Earth
North Sentinel island is located far into the Indian Ocean in the chain of islands called the Andaman and Nicobar Islands which is a territory of India. The island is about the size of Manhattan and its illegal to travel here because the island is home to the planet’s most isolated hunter-gatherer society.
The Sentinelese tribe could range anywhere from 15-500 people but there’s no way of knowing for certain. What we do know is that they do not wish to be contacted as they have resisted any and all contact with the outside world for up to 60,000 years. Nothing is known about their language, they hunt with bows and arrows and they are completely untouched by modern civilization. Today’s so-called un-contacted people all have a history of contact, whether from exploitation or simply seeing a plane flying overhead. What I’ve come to realize is that there are no people who are isolated by accident or have somehow managed to stay completely unaware of the modern times- it’s more that there is this deep rooted fear or defiance of the outside world. Also, the Sentinelese and other isolated tribes around the world are extremely vulnerable to any foreign contact because they have virtually zero immunity to our diseases and could very quickly be wiped out by the exposure.
Pitcairn Island is a British Overseas Territory situated 3,300 miles from New Zealand and no plane or helicopter has ever landed there, so getting there requires a 32-hour cargo ship journey. In the 1700’s this island was settled by a real life ship full of mutineers. The mutineers were running from British Naval ships when they found the uninhabited Pitcairn Island and decided to hide there by sinking their ship after they landed. Today there are around 50 people living on Pitcairn Island which is not much larger than Central Park.
Tristan da Cunha island is said to be the world’s most remote inhabited archipelago which also happens to be on an active volcano. The closest other people to this little town is 1200 miles away in St. Helena and it's 1700 miles away from South Africa. Can you imagine living there?? There’s less than 300 people who call this place home which still feels like a surprising amount of people.
La Rinconada, Peru is the highest human habitation in the world, and it is home to some of the most brutal living conditions in the world. The town is built at an astonishing height of 16,700 feet. The town is accessible only by braving a dangerous mountainside road covered in ice and the journey can take several days. Its unclear exactly how many people live in La Rinconada because there’s a totally lack of government regulation but it’s estimated to be as many 50,000 live here. The motivation to live in this harsh landscape? Gold mining.
The Russian town of Oymyakon also known as the coldest inhabited place on earth. It takes two days to get there, traveling down a barren and isolated stretch of road from the closest city in Siberia. Temperatures there average around -58° F during the winter months in this area of Northeastern Russia. Daylight only lasts for 3 hours in the winter but it’s light out for 21 hours in the summer. Around 500 people live in this remote community!!
