10 Most Incredible Things Found in Antarctica

Most Unbelievable Things Found Frozen in Ice!

A 12,000 year-old dog! An ancient crocodile found in Antarctica! A fully preserved female mammoth found in Siberia and a crazy doctor that might be trying to clone them all! Here are the most incredible things found frozen in ice!

Tumat puppies.
In 2011, in the Village of Tumat, North Russia, on a riverbank, an ancient deposit of bones was found buried in the permafrost, these bones were the remains of a young dog that was discovered to be 12,500 years old! In 2015, just 6ft away, a second dog was found but this one was almost perfectly preserved, between 70-80%, including the brain. Researchers believe that both dogs were kept as pets or working dogs and were of the same litter. Scientists are searching both dogs for remains of ancient parasites and their intestines for ancient bacteria.
Doctor Hwang Woo-suk, a South Korean Veterinarian who conducts controversial cloning experiments has been brought onto the project and has taken samples of the animal's skin, muscles, and ear cartilage and has said that he is very excited to be involved. Hwang thinks that the mummified puppy might provide the key to bringing the species back from extinction.

Viking Sword
Three Norwegian reindeer hunters were very surprised to find an extremely well preserved Viking Sword at the top of a 5300ft mountain in Southern Norway.
What surprised them is that Vikings are not known for their mountaineering skills and that a Viking sword could remain so well preserved after 1200 years!
After dating the sword, archaeologists returned to the site but found no other artifacts, this led them to believe that the sword belonged to a Viking swordsman from between 850-950 AD and that he possibly lost it on the mountain during a blizzard, then, a combination of snow, very cold temperatures and reduced amount of oxygen at the high altitude aided its remarkable preservation.

Complete Mammoth
In 2013, scientists from the Siberian Northeastern Federal University were told about so tusks that were seen sticking out of the permafrost on Maly Lyakhovsky Island in Northern Siberia. When the scientist visited the site, what they found was incredibly interesting. They found a full-grown Mammoth almost completely intact, Three legs and the majority of its head, trunk, and body were recovered and the corpse was so well preserved that they even managed to recover a vial of the mammoth's blood.
After studying the remains of the Mammoth it was discovered that she was a female around 50 years old and had died from an attack from wolves and other predators after getting stuck in a peat bog approximately 40,000 years ago.
Once again, due to the exceptional preservation of the specimen, Doctor Hwang AKA Doctor Clone, was also called in to be part of this project and to attempt to find enough intact DNA to recreate the Mammoth's Genome.

Frozen Crocodile
During an expedition to Antarctica in the summer of 2010-2011 (the Antarctic summer is from October to February) the team reached a site called Graphite peak, here they discovered a fossil specimen under the snow that consisted of a Skull, limbs, and some portions of backbone, although the specimen was not complete, it was enough to know that they had discovered a new species dating back 250 million years. The Artarctanax was a type of Archosaur, a distant ancestor of the Crocodile, and it was a carnivore. The thing that the scientists found surprising wasn't the discovery that was made, but, where the discovery was made.

Loch Ness Monster Ancestor.
Paleontologists working in the icy depths of Antarctica have recently uncovered the fossilized remains of the largest Elasmosaurid known to man. The creature is 40ft long, would have weighed about 15 tonnes, and looks suspiciously like the popular renditions of the Loch Ness Monster. Unlike other Elasmosaurids, this reptile was so big that scientists believe it didn't prey on individual animals but ate lots of smaller ones, similar to the way whales do today.
The creature is believed to be 70 million years old and was actually discovered in 1989 but due to the inhospitable area and extreme climate, excavation has been a long and grueling process which was completed in 2017.

9000 Year Old Bison.
In 2011, some members of the Yukagir tribe in northern Siberia discovered the remains of a Steppe Bison, an extinct ancestor of the modern-day bison. The finding of a Steppe bison carcass itself is not unusual but this one was the most well preserved one ever found. Carbon dating told them it was over 9000 years old and judging by the lack of fat around its abdomen researchers think it died of starvation.

10 Once in a Lifetime Experiences in Antarctica

Get more Tips here!

Mingle with penguins, watch whales, speak to real scientists, and get lost in this beautiful, serene wilderness. There are dozens of reasons to explore the vast reaches of Antarctica. Here are some of the most incredible.

1. Seriously, Bro, the Penguins
One of the most compelling reasons to visit Antarctica is the chance to visit with a colony of penguins. They’re not afraid to interact with visiting tourists. Visiting Antarctica means you have the opportunity to stand surrounded by one of the most impressive (and adorable) creatures on the planet.

2. Take a Dip at Deception Bay
Yes, you can take a swim in Antarctica without freezing your toes off. Deception Bay is a stretch of water that sits in the bowl of a giant, dormant volcano which means that the water is a great place to go swimming in Antarctica.

3. Go Kayaking
Kayaking in Antarctica is a beast of a different stripe. It's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see a variety of seals in their natural habitat. You’ll never get over the thrill of watching a colossal whale swim underneath your kayak while you’re rowing through a bay.

4. Check Out Some Science Facilities
Most facilities will turn visitors away to preserve the fidelity of their study, but a handful will happily show you around real-world institutions that are studying a vast variety of issues facing Earth.

5. Spend at Least One Night Camping Out
Is camping out in sub-zero temperatures going to be warm? Heck no. You also can’t legally eat or drink on the shores of Antarctica. If you’re the kind of person who likes to camp out anyway, then Antarctica is the pinnacle of camping adventures.

6. Jump on a Zodiac
Zodiac tours are a great way to get extremely close to Antarctica’s unique wildlife. Want to get within arm’s reach of a leopard seal? This is the way to do it. Zodiac tours rarely disappoint.

7. Reflect on History at the Terra Nova Hut
The crew and animals of the ill-fated Terra Nova expedition discovered that were unable to make the return trip from the South Pole. Today, their base camp on Home Beach is still there, complete with some of the skeletons of the dogs who perished with the expedition.

8. Sail Through Lemaire Channel
This 7-mile-long channel is bordered by mountains on both sides. It’s also home to some fascinating wildlife that will greet you as you sail through. The views are so universally gorgeous that Lemaire Channel has been nicknamed, “Kodak Gap.”

9. Take a Whale Watching Excursion
The whales are genuinely curious about visitors. Get ready to see these majestic, massive mammals in their natural environment, swimming, and hunting with unbelievable grace.

10. Visit the Southern Most Post Office in the World
Okay, you might not have a burning desire to send out some snail mail from Antarctica, but visiting the post office in Port Lockroy means wading through a huge penguin colony and getting close to some massive icebergs. And, hey, you can always send yourself a postcard to commemorate the occasion.

Which of these activities would you like to do?

Antarctica Full Documentary | Amazing Facts of Antarctica

Antarctica (/ænˈtɑːrtɪkə/ or /æntˈɑːrktɪkə/ (About this soundlisten)) is Earth's southernmost continent. It contains the geographic South Pole and is situated in the Antarctic region of the Southern Hemisphere, almost entirely south of the Antarctic Circle, and is surrounded by the Southern Ocean. At 14,200,000 square kilometres (5,500,000 square miles), it is the fifth-largest continent and nearly twice the size of Australia. At 0.00008 people per square kilometre, it is by far the least densely populated continent. About 98% of Antarctica is covered by ice that averages 1.9 km (1.2 mi; 6,200 ft) in thickness,[5] which extends to all but the northernmost reaches of the Antarctic Peninsula.

Antarctica, on average, is the coldest, driest, and windiest continent, and has the highest average elevation of all the continents. Most of Antarctica is a polar desert, with annual precipitation of 200 mm (7.9 in) along the coast and far less inland; there has been no rain there for almost 2 million years, yet 80% of the world freshwater reserves are stored there, enough to raise global sea levels by about 60 metres (200 ft) if all of it were to melt. The temperature in Antarctica has reached −89.2 °C (−128.6 °F) (or even −94.7 °C (−135.8 °F) as measured from space), though the average for the third quarter (the coldest part of the year) is −63 °C (−81 °F). Anywhere from 1,000 to 5,000 people reside throughout the year at research stations scattered across the continent. Organisms native to Antarctica include many types of algae, bacteria, fungi, plants, protista, and certain animals, such as mites, nematodes, penguins, seals and tardigrades. Vegetation, where it occurs, is tundra.

Antarctica is noted as the last region on Earth in recorded history to be discovered, unseen until 1820 when the Russian expedition of Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen and Mikhail Lazarev on Vostok and Mirny sighted the Fimbul ice shelf. The continent, however, remained largely neglected for the rest of the 19th century because of its hostile environment, lack of easily accessible resources, and isolation. In 1895, the first confirmed landing was conducted by a team of Norwegians. Antarctica's buried active volcanoes weren't discovered until 2013
