Vietnam Travel Guide: Hanoi, Ha Long Bay, Ho Chi Minh

Gorgeous beaches, fascinating and complicated history, incredible food, lush nature; Vietnam is a country that truly has it all. Whether this country is first or fiftieth on your list, our travel guide has all the information you need to know if you’re planning (or dreaming of planning!) a trip to Vietnam.

Leave your expectations behind if you’re heading to Vietnam: here, you’ll eat noodles for breakfast, do your shopping in the middle of the night, and discover a country with a new story around every corner.

Hanoi more than delivers on urban excitement. If you’re looking for unique and mouth-watering food, the night markets of the Vietnamese capital should be your very first stop. You can enjoy a zippy ride on a scooter, all the street-food you can eat, and a night exploring the rapid development of this modern city. From trendy clubs to traditional puppet shows, experience a nightlife that’s all Vietnam’s own, and eat and drink the night away with locals and visitors alike!

Of course, Vietnam isn’t all fast-paced cities and rooftop bars. For a slower pace, head to Ha Long Bay and sail alongside limestone islets, with their lush rainforests towering above your head. The water is emerald-green, matching the vibrant greenery, and a sailing excursion here is like nothing else you’ve experienced before! A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the islets of Ha Long Bay are said have been thrown into the bay by a dragon protecting the people of Vietnam. Take a junk boat tour for a close encounter, or try scuba diving or snorkelling in the bay!

You’ll find a new adventure around every corner in Vietnam. From breakfast in the Bình Tây Market and a secret tunnel system in Ho Chi Minh City, to sailing along the Mekong Delta in a traditional basket boat, you can find your perfect trip - no matter what that looks like - somewhere in Vietnam.

There’s no time like the present to start planning an adventure of your own in this majestic country, so why not start today? Head over to TourRadar to explore the range of tours available, or watch more of our videos exploring Vietnam if you still haven’t gotten enough of seeing the beautiful views and incredible adventures you could be having.

In this Hoi An Travel Guide, find out all the best things to do in Hoi An. We visited the Hoi An Market, ate a banh mi delicious enough to draw in Anthony Bourdain, and wandered through Hoi An's historic Ancient Town.

Visit Vietnam Now! | Ho Chi Min, Hoi An, Hanoi, Ha Long Bay, Can Tho | TRAVEL TALES

This is the untold story of when I was in Vietnam on South East Asia Trip in 2018. My time here was part of a group tour organised by G Adventures. This video tells the story of Vietnam.

Crossing the border from Cambodia we arrived into southern Vietnam for what would be the start of a 2 week trip form the south to the north. Can Tho was the first place we arrived to. We had a village homestay in huts looking over the rice fields. The hosts showed us their cooking methods making meals over fire in massive woks. The next day we also saw the local market. It was on the river itself! Barges and boats moving up and down the waterways with people flagging them down to haggle for local products, it was a crazy experience.

Moving on to the capital of the south: Ho Chi Minh City aka Saigon. Thousands of mopeds ruled the streets in this busy city, but we were to head out to the forest to learn about the Vietnam War. Here we were shown around by a Vietnamese War veteran who used to interpret for the American Army. Many of the traps and tunnels are preserved and we even got to crawl through one, it was very dark and narrow!

Train was a popular form of travel here and we used them to get from place to place overnight. This was quite loud and bumpy, ad we bought sleep sheets from the local market to help 'protect' us from any bugs on board.

After a quick stop at beach town Nha Trang, and another train ride we arrived in Hội An, a colorful UNESCO heritage town. Filled with lanterns, suit and dress tailoring and a atmosphere. We rode bikes around rice fields, took part in a local food project and danced the night away.

Huế was the next stop. At this time there was a big national football game and people were lining the local bars and streets, riding mopeds about beeping loudly and waving flags.

Ha Long Bay was really a world wonder and a backpacker must see, taking a boat out to cruise around the rock formations and also hop into kayaks to get closer to the amazing site.

We ended our time in Vietnam in the northern capital and official capital: Hanoi. There was a cultural show with traditional music and puppetry, and city sites to take in.

Our time backpacking Vietnam was only 2 weeks, to avoid any visa needs, but it was packed full of must see adventures.

Overall, it was a great addition to our time in Asia and would recommend a visit.

There was no 'Travel Bubble' at the time, and my journey was documented on my I-Phone 8+ and a Go-Pro Hero 5. I knew from my South America solo trip that I wanted to capture travel in more detail, so took time to capture more footage, and make sure it was saved regularly, but I had no idea about what filming and making a video was really about. The start of this channel showcased the original highlight videos from S.E Asia, but there was a story that needed to be told! Those videos acted as a prequal to starting travel vlogs in the return to South America in 2019.

This video and these memories are the most personal project to date, and the trickiest story to tell. I hope you enjoy.

Vietnam FIRST CLASS Overnight Train - How to Travel from Hanoi to Hoi An | Vietnam Trains

Vietnam overnight sleeper trains are the easiest and cheapest mode of travel between cities. Although Vietnam looks like a small country but you need to travel a lot and the major cities such as Hanoi, Hoi an and Ho Chi Minh are quite far from each other.

So how can you travel in Vietnam?

The local transportation system in Vietnam is quite good. There are local buses, trains and flights available from and to each and every city.

Vietnam overnight sleeper trains are supremely comfortable and cheap modes of travel!!!

The FIRST CLASS berths in 6-berth cabins costed me about 180,000 VND for a soft sleeper berth. There are other options as well that include hard berths, hard chairs, soft chairs and 4-berth sleeper cabins and prices vary accordingly.

The cheapest option that I found to be equally comfortable as well was the overnight train between Hanoi and Da Nang (closest railway station to Hoi an) and then you can take a 30 mins taxi ride to Hoi An city.

On demand cab service in Vietnam: GrabCab (mobile app, works like Uber)

Welcome to the third video in our Vietnam series! In this video, we will be showing you everything to see and do in 48 hours in HANOI, VIETNAM!

We are spending 3 weeks in this beautiful country and we are currently in the city of Hanoi! We have been completely submerged in the hustle and bustle of the city. Hanoi has so much to offer and in today’s video, we are going to be taking you around and showing you all of the do not miss, top sights!

Our first stop was the Temple of Literature. There are 5 different courtyards to walk through and admire. and the city has done a lovely job of maintaining the grounds and the perfectly manicured gardens.

We also made stops at the Hoa Lo Prison, the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, Trúc Bạch Lake, and so much more!

One of our favorite stops was the Hanoi Train street! It’s a tiny narrow street surrounded by high narrow houses packed closely together. These families’ backyards are the railways where the train passes a few times per day. Ask the locals about the train schedule to get there for the best time!

There is so much to see and do in Hanoi! Hopefully, this video will help you plan a wonderful itinerary in this beautiful city!

Don’t miss next week when we check off a bucket list item and cruise Ha Long Bay!

Vietnam ROADTRIP [EP1] - HANOI to SAIGON | Vietnam travel vlog

This is Episode 1: North of the Vietnam Roadtrip from Hanoi to Saigon. In this episode we cover the North of Vietnam, completing 700km in the first 11 days, visiting Ninh Binh, Vinh, Phong Nha and Hue along the way. In the Vietnam Roadtrip, we cover over 2000km in 42 days, experiencing 15 regions on just 2 motorbikes down the coast of 1 country.

We couldn't have picked a worse time to depart Hanoi as typhoon Wipha was arriving from the East, meaning we had to drive through dangerous flooding and uncomfortable conditions. After some sightseeing in Ninh Binh we raced down to be in Phong Nha for day 5, Emma's birthday, so we could celebrate it in the lush nature there. After 3 days of birthday celebrations, we continued on to Hue, Vietnam's ancient capital, to soak up some culture there and complete the North of Vietnam.

Make sure to watch to the end to see a trailer for Episode 2: Central, where we complete the next 700km leg, travelling to Danang, Hoi An, Ly Son island, Quy Nhon, Nha Trang and Dalat before we reach Southern Vietnam.

Not only was this adventure almost 2 years ago, it has seemed like it has taken me 2 years to edit it! I wanted to make the video as ambitious as the roadtrip was, including custom animating the day/kilometre odometers, including photo reels for the first time, and finding creative ways to show the many portrait iPhone videos I took along the way. I hope the effort was worth it, and I capture some of the magic of this once-in-a-lifetime adventure.

In Today's Vietnam travel vlog, we had the opportunity to embark on our first-ever luxury boat cruise through Ha Long Bay Vietnam, we knew the cruise would be an amazing experience although we were not expecting it to be as beautiful as it was.
The Ha Long Bay boat cruise is an experience we recommend to anyone travelling to Vietnam in 2022 and beyond.

Night market of Hoi An set beautifully by the river side Evenings are a special time in Hoi An when lanterns are all lit up. If you are up for a night time shopping, you can cross the bridge over to An Hoi island where a night market is set up selling everything from silk lanterns to beaded necklaces. Hoi An Night Market really seems to appeal people from anywhere, it is indeed one of the most beautiful night markets. Just always keep in mind to bargain whenever you shop here...
