TRAVEL TIPS: NIUE

2,400 kilometers northeast of New Zealand and a part of the triangle formed by the Kingdom of Tonga to the west, the Samoa's to the north and the Cook Islands to the east, sits Niue Island.

Niu ē translates to mean Behold the coconut but the land has been known by a few names in her time; Like the one Captain James Cook coined in 1774, Savage Island.
Legend has it; the natives that greeted him were painted in what appeared to Cook and his crew to be blood. It turns out that the suspicious substance on their teeth was from the harmless hulahula, a native red banana- But Cook wasn't so keen to stick around and find that out- so the name Savage Island stuck for a couple of centuries.
Niue is also affectionately known as The Rock of Polynesia due to the fact that it's one of the world's largest coral Islands. The landscape is made up of steep limestone cliffs that rise out of the ocean to impressive heights of up to 60 meters.
And to our coconet.tv travel guide Shimpal Lelisi -- Niue is simply called- Home. So who better to give you a guided tour? Jump in with Shim and take in the sights and sounds of this truly unique pacific Island.

How We Harvest Taros! | Niue Style! | My Way! | Taro Farming |

Planting and harvesting taros here on Niue is a lifestyle for most families. It is our staple food. Children help by working alongside their parents and learning at the same time. This is how the torch of knowledge is being passed on from generation to generation.

This is how children or young people are introduced and inducted into the learning and values of hard work, patience, teamwork, delayed gratification and also skills of working without supervision, after they have been taught under supervision of course.

These taro farming experiences will in no doubt help mould them into hard working and responsible individuals with fortitude. Skills gained and mental strength that can transform or translate well into other areas of their lives.

There are lots of taro varieties and each has their own unique characteristics such as taste, texture, longevity in the ground, growth factors, external environmental factors and so forth. There is so much to learn, understand and appreciate about taro farming.
It is an ongoing process which never ends unless you give it up altogether or leave the Island!

Island of NIUE: Empty, ☹️ abandoned homes after huge storm destroys island

Island of Niue, Pacific Ocean - abandoned homes in Niue in the Pacific Ocean after strong cyclone of Heta. After cyclone Heta, let's visit the abandoned and destroyed homes in the island nation of Niue in the South Pacific Ocean. Let's go inside the abandoned homes in the island of Niue to see how everything was left 12 years ago after the horrible cyclone Heta hit Niue in 2004. Cyclone Heta hammered the tiny Pacific island of Niue in 2004. As a result, many homes in Niue were destrpyed and remained abandoned many years later.
Satellite images showed that Niue was directly in the path of the cyclone Heta. Reports said Niue had been experiencing gale force winds all day and the centre of the cyclone could bring sustained winds of over 200 kilometres an hour with gusts of up to 280 kilometres an hour.
Telephone lines to the 260 square kilometre coral atoll were cut earlier in the day as it had lowered its radio masts ahead of the cyclone.
Ready told the New Zealand Press Association, It's a full-blown hurricane - it's up there with the best of them.
He said damage was likely to be considerable. Alipate Waqaicelua, an officer at the Regional Specialised Meteorological Centre (RSMC) in Nadi, Fiji, told Radio New Zealand that the cyclone should leave Niue in the clear by early Wednesday morning.
But reports said that depending on the extent of the damage, it could be days before communications with Niue - one of the poorest Pacific island states - are restored and details are known.

Niue is a small, oval island in the South Pacific Ocean, to the east of Tonga. It has an area of 260 square kilometres, and a coastline of 64 km. It claims an exclusive economic zone of 200 nautical miles, and a territorial sea of 12 nautical miles. It is one of world's largest coral islands

Niue is the World's Largest Raised Coral Atoll

Niue is famous for being, quite simply, different from its South Pacific neighbours. Instead of being an archipelago of sandy shores or volcanos, Niue is a raised coral atoll – the world's largest!

Niue's land area is about 261.46 square kilometres (100.95 sq mi) and its population was 1,689 at the Census in 2022. Niue is one of the world's largest coral islands

In 1900 Great Britain established a protectorate over Niue. The following year the island was annexed to New Zealand as part of the Cook Islands, but in 1903 it was separated and given its own resident commissioner and island council

Niue is a very small economy, has a low savings rate, and relies more on official than private financial inflows, which all indicate a lack of creditworthiness

We have to leave NOW! 48 hours in Niue (S1 Episode 5)

Bad weather is on it's way and it's time to GET OUTTA HERE! After sailing 1500 miles from New Zealand to Niue, we finally make landfall only to find out that there's huge westerly swells coming in that will force us to head west to Tonga. We make the most of the time we have and have the awesome opportunity to meet up with Nikki and Jason Wynn From Gone With The Wynn's. They're scuba diving lovers just like us, so we go on a little mission together and do some amazing cave diving and get up close and personal with the endemic katuali or flat tail sea snake.

Keeping The Niue Culture Alive! Haircutting & Earpiercing Galue!

This is the haircutting and earpiercing ceremony of Asher, Nora and Indie. Loved ones of Vanessa Marsh and BJ Rex of Alofi, Niue Island.

The Niue haircutting ceremony feast is a traditional celebration of Niue to mark the coming of age of young men. Traditionally, the ceremony involves the cutting of the young men's hair, which is seen as a symbolic representation of their transition from childhood to adulthood. Their hair hasn't been cut since birth until this event.

During the ceremony, the young men's hair is cut by designated family members and friends. For the girls, it is piercing of their ears.
After the cutting of the hair or piercing of the ears for the girls, an uncooked feast is distributed out to invited guests to celebrate the occasion.

The family prepares for this event way in advance by raising pigs and planting taro plantations. Extended family, friends and people in the community and the Island also contributes to the feast or the galue it is called in Niue.

The size of the galue you get is in direct correlation to the amount of money you donate to the family on the day of the event. Donations range anywhere from $20 to thousands of dollars. The top donation that got the first galue on this occassion is $10K.
How this normally works is like in a reciprocal way, so when people you invited to your event, when they do their function, they will invite you. So here, you return to them whatever amount of donation that they bring to yours, plus a little more usually. It would be considered very rude and wrong if you don't.

Congratulations to Vanessa and BJ Rex and their families and friends for all the hard work that goes into this event!

Niue Island Tourism Promotional

We visited this remote island in the South Pacific in 2012 on the (then) once weekly fligth from Auckland. Niue is not your typical South Pacific Island with snowy white sand and swaying palm trees! But what they lack in terms of beaches the reason why you should come here, is the people of the island! Incredible hospitable and we felt that the entire island met us at the airport on arrival. Immediately invited to chair in local traditions (as the weekly sundowner on the beach bar) to local festivities. And on top of the people iot is the incredible diving that are offered on Niue. This is a very special place in the South Pacific scheme of things! The video was given to us by the Niue Tourism Office.

Snorkeling and Sea Tracks on Niue Island.m4v

Over 7 days in late September 2012 my wife and I stayed on Niue Island
which is situated about 250km's east of Tonga in the South Pacific.

Our first day was spent scuba diving 2 sites located at Avatele
but I was very disappointed with the lack of fish we saw, however
the coral growth was excellent.
I have to admit that the damage which was caused by Cyclone Heta
in January 2004 obviously wiped out much of the coral reefs with
reported winds up to 270kph and 50m seas. The island seems to
have very good quality hard corals and they are quite prolific.
We did see a nice school of small barracuda but just not the
larger schools of trevally or large barracuda that we have seen
in other tropical destinations. Still the clarity of the water
makes you feel like you are in heaven, and I'm sorry to say
I didn't go on to dive any of the other caves and reefs found
up and down the west coast, so don't take my word for it,
come here and see it for yourself!

This video shows off some of the more beautiful and visually
stunning coastline, sea caves and shallow inlets with an
assortment of fish, sea kraits (sea snakes), crustaceans
(like the banded shrimp) and the amazing water clarity
which Niue is renowned for.

Some of the sea caves are quite large with stalagmites
and stalactites giving an eerie sense of how old the island
of Niue is - and how long these stalagmites and stalactites
would have taken to grow so large...
several thousands of years I am guessing...

Niue is truly a remarkable place to visit - the coastal fringe
is vividly coloured with green forests, jagged coral cliffs and
some of the clearest water on the planet -
the sea caves are out of this world and I reckon the
snorkeling was actually better than the scuba diving -
we saw more fish, especially at the channel at Avatele.
The coral in the shallows is better too...
and it didn't cost us anything....
But I do like being under the water looking up at that
big deep blue sea, it's just amazing.

Hope you like the video - sorry it's a bit shaky, was all
filmed with my GoPro2 and holding it steady while walking
down a sea track with arms loaded with snorkel gear
was a bit tricky.

Enjoy, and please make a comment if you'd like,

Dave Bryant.

PS, all the music was produced by my brother, Andy
and all the footage was shot with my new GoPro2 and
GoPro underwater Housing.
